What looked like a catastrophic loss of oil when the car was started from cold turned out to be quite an easy fix actually - much to my relief! FORGOT TO SHOW & MENTION - Replace the O rings when changing the gasket (didn't film that part)

Great, thanks for the very useful video. Just done mine on a 123D. Three of the five bolts on the filter housing are difficult and two you can’t really see. I needed 3 different length socket extensions and used different combinations of these to remove the bolts. I also invested a few dollars in a wobble drive socket extension which was well worth it (just allows the socket to be angled a few degrees and better than a universal joint). Note on the video that is not mentioned; you need to disconnect the large black hose (via the clip that holds it on) ant the upper end and move it around in different positions as you access the bolts. Cheers from NZ.

Never done a chain but I wouldn't think they'd need to touch it. If the oil was changed at the same time, that could have triggered it. Could be pure coincidence of course. See if you can get underneath to see exactly where the leak is coming from.

And again, others are saying the alternator isnt necessary to remove, is this true? Thanks! Great video

You can just top up the oil. Mine needed changing as it was due. The alternator can stay on. It's very easy to remove though and gives much more room to get the housing out and back in. I also disconnected the battery as there's a live cable on top of the alternator (mine didn't have the plastic cover over the connecting lead bolt) Everybody has their own way of doing things! 😄

@@AndrzejOdGrubego I only removed the alternator to get better access to the housing. Apparently you can do the job without removing it. Did you disconnect the battery? There should be a permanent live to the battery main terminal at all times (two cables) when the battery is connected. Hi, will the oil filter housing gasket leak when the engine is not running? I just changed mine yesterday, still leaking overnight, had a big patch of oil under car this morning I'm thinking it must be above the standing oil level as the dipstick goes way below the filter housing, right?
@garageofdad
@garageofdad Год назад
There's always a bit of oil left in the housing when you take it off. If you can get a mirror in there to see where the oil's coming from that would help. Did you replace the 4 O rings as well? The gasket may have not seated correctly. Good luck.

@@Leigh20007 Yes, I did an oil change at the same time. I know it's a hassle but you may need to take it off again to make sure it's sealed properly.
