That's so insane that 193 HP are considered as underpowered. Back then, it was quite a bit of power and it's still way enough to tear your license apart
@@duglandp It isn't insane if you take look at power to weight ratio. 528i got about 125HP per ton, this is less than 1.8 miatas, which are generally considered to be very slow on straight line. You have to see power band (or video like this) to realise how beafy and torqy these 125HP/t are, with power coming up from lowest rpms.
Love that "M52" namecode of the engine.... it's smooth when you drive normally and it transforms itself in a more powerful cat when you need... It's reliable, doens't drink to much.... and deserved a 6 speed gearbox to be as it real value but with a 5 ... you can be in front of lots of car when you want.... and that's so a lovely sound ...
@@jetstream454 the M54 is a little bit more recent, but pretty the same..if the maintenance is done at good time... Repliable, powerful and good sound !
Back in 2015, i got to drive my uncles E39 528i auto & in comparison to my E36 328i manual, it felt sluggish on takeoff but it was such an awesome highway cruiser, really liked it. These M52 motors are bulletproof, cant go wrong with it and E39 is probably the best Bmw ever made, it doesnt get better than that.
A great car. In line 6 cyl. No vibration. No turbo. Hygh reliability. Smooth drive. And beautiful cockpit, well designed and light years away from current awful rectangular lcd. Keep these cars as long as you can.
I've been at speed of 240 kmh with e39 523i, so something is not correct with this car, i know this is capable of at least 240 kmh or even bit over that
@@Zonguldak67z my Bmw E39 has the 4 speed and its a petrol engine. Its pritty shit so a zf 5 speed manual would be the best. In wiki you can see these models 528i 1997 came with gm 4l30e 4 speed.

Zu erst Gurt anschnallen, Sitz anpassen und Scheinwerfer anlassen mit Navi an (unnötige Belastung für die Batterie)...??? Und erst dann den Motor anlassen...??? Und dann gleich in "D" schalten wo die Drehzahl immer noch bei 1000 ist???? Wie viele Totsünden kann man eigentlich machen...??? Ok, der Motor war schon betriebswarm, aber trotzdem...ziemlich schwach...Bei kaltem Motor genau umgekehrt....erst Motor anlassen und dann alles weitere...und in der Zeit kann sich der Motor stabilisieren und etwas wärmer werden...die M52/54 Motoren muss man schonend und langsam warm fahren, danach ist spritzig kein Problem...hab selber einen E39 530i...
Als ob das Radio, der Sitz und die Scheinwerfer irgendwas ausmachen wenn man danach knapp 200A von der Batterie beim Anlassen zieht... Das muss eine Batterie schon aushalten!
Damals sicher schnell, aber für heutige Verhältnisse so laaaaaahm und dann auch noch ein viel zu hoher Spritverbrauch, sehr langsame und träge Automatik. Aber: Diese Motoren sind fast nicht kaputt zu bekommen und außer den Querlenkern und Querlenkerbuchsen sowie Bremsen keine großen Schwachstellen. Einzig der E39 Touring hatte im laufe der Jahre ein großes Problem mit defekten Kabelbäumen sodass Heckscheibenwischer und/oder Heckbeleuchtung ausfallen.
was erwartest du von so einem alten auto?? zeig mir doch mal in diesem jahrgang ein auto mit schneller automatik, die mit heutigen vergleichbar sind. du vergleichst äpfel mit birnen. schmecken beide, sind aber total unterschiedlich
