Despite a sharper focus on comfort, BMW's latest 5 Series saloon is still a popular choice for business buyers looking for a sporting executive model. And although it looks plainer, the new 5 Series is more technologically sophisticated and desirable than ever before. All cars get 'EfficientDynamics' equipment -- which includes a stop-start system on the 520d that cuts the engine in queuing traffic to save fuel. All of this ensures that the 5 Series is fun to drive, and green, too. By far the biggest seller is the 181bhp 520d, which returns an impressive 56.5mpg. SE or M Sport trims are available, the latter bringing more aggressive styling and firmer suspension.

Costs about 40K here for the 520i/523i model. Friends warned me not to get 5 series as a first car but oh well.

The 530d and the 535d are perfect. Amazing fuel efficiency, comfortable, great to drive, spacious enough, decent inoffensive design, amazing interior, good levels of equipment and pretty fast. Although I'd rather have a 535i (or an M5 if I won the lottery).

By used car - 1 or 2 year old . I own a used BMW 5 series - 2011. No mechanical problems at all . Drives well.

Every time he reviews a rear wheel drive car he says the same thing: "Good heavens, it's a transmission tunnel!" You put your feet either side of it, not on it. It is unlikely that passengers either side of you will have such enormous feet that each of the foot wells will be filled.

My shortlist was the Mercedes E350, and the BMW 530i; I happily ended up with the 2013 530i 3 weeks ago. Mercedes is a very good car, but the BMW is for the driver more comfortable, extremely refined, and better looking.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. To be honest, I drove the 530D and said, yeah this is just an AWESOME car. And then I thought, well actually, for a couple grand more, I could get the 535 which is a ROCKET!!! And yet, its comfortable and civilised when you want it to be (avoid M sport trim for this). Couldnt reccommend it highly enough!! As good as an M3, but 5 grand less and easier to live with every day! Everyones a winner :)

I have the 525d 6 cylinder of 2011. a beautiful car with lots of torque, real pleasure to drive and the sound of the motor is allways a pleasure.

@@HEDVlogs Very good. I had it chipped to 270 hp 2 years ago. Car has now 220.000 km and still drives as new. The chair heating driver below is broken but that is all. Car is not causing a lot of expenses.

For the F10 M5 they use a synthesiser which pipes sound to the cabin (you can disable this feature). They also do this for the new Audi RS6 and Ford Fiesta ST

As much as I love BMW´s (driven them for some years now) some things that I would love to be normal things keep coming as extras. That thing about the rear folding seats being optative is a nuisance. Beautiful car!

My Ford has full heated leather, climate control, bluetooth, handsfree, heated windscreen, voice control and USB. It is very comfortable especially compared to the Citroen I owned previously, I work for a car supermarket and we lease company cars which are usually BMW 535d's, BMW 3 Series Coupes, or Volvo V60's and I have driven them all to take them to be serviced at the dealers, yes they are all luxurious but I wouldn't say they are in a different league to Ford's high end models.

All you 5 series owners. Should I buy a used low km 5 series? Have you found them to have any common mechanical problems? They are just so cheap, and a pretty current looking shape that I'm seriously considering one.

E60 are pretty good with the 3 liter m57 those engines are animals, or the 2 liter m47 engine also really good

I have had mine for 2 years now , its a 2012 520d , solid built , super comfy although be warned standard suspension is setup for comfort, so its not the best for handling especially when driving hard. We are averaging 47mpg and road tax in the UK for a year is only £30 !!! It also pulls like a train , 180bhp will keep up with a Golf GTD, possibly the most comfortable practical and most enjoyable car i have ever owned. Common problem with this modehowever are the early diesel engines , the infamous N47 bmw diesel unit was prone to early/premature timing chain failure , which if it snaps will write the car off , if you can hear an unusual noise from the back of the engine especially on cold starts, steer very clear.

I spent 7000 dollars on a 5 series 99 model by the time I hit 100,000 miles and then I traded it off. Great car engine and ride but they will drain you dry if you don't trade em at 50,000 miles! The 7 grand did not include maintenance!

Very true, BUT, you cannot honestly say you've been in both a Ford and a BMW and that you like both interiors just as much? My parents don't drive a BMW or anything, just a plain Ford Focus Ecomax, and a Nissan Note 1.6 but I regularly drive 'luxury' brands and the materials used, and the finishing quality are of a different league.

In spite of BMW's 'feeling' solidly built, owners experience more than their fair share of issues. Look at the latest J D Powers report (customer feedback on faults that required off road repairs in first 90 days of ownership) and you'll see what I mean. Whereas Lexus and now Jaguar top that report!

the same old boring debate of what is best audi or bmw. guys, accept it, both cars are great and they are both miles ahead of their competitors. At the moment i have the audi a6 new facelift (2011) and will be moving into a practically new BMW 5. Have been with Audi for 6 years which included 3 x a6, 2xa5 coupe and sportback and i loved their cars. Thank you Audi for the enjoyment you have given me but now its time for a change.

i'm thinking of getting a 1 yr old secondhand 520d. but what concerns me the most is, does that engine have enough power, let say to overtake a semi trailer truck that is doing 63mph on a road where there will be trafic coming from the opposite direction, do i have to wait for a long stretch till i can put my pedal to the floor?

Mercedes e220 is better than 520d.. We drive diesel model to use cheaper fuels and better fuel efficiency, not for sporty driving(in my opinion). Therefore, plus Mercedes' better with smooth ride, I wanna give a thumb to e220. I'm planning to buy e220, but could you recommend other good diesel cars? Tnks c:

What you just said makes no sense at all. At least the Mercedes isn't a grown-up three series and has some inspiration behind it. It's also far more refined, and worth it's value. All BMW's have basically the same interiors and same idea, and that is why they never hit the mark on any car besides the three series, because they're too focused on sport.

LOL. Q5 was just voted the most reliable car in my country, based on statistics and not on guesswork. And if you break your BMW right now, you have the joy of waiting for a new part for 3-4 months while your car sits at the dealership. The new 3 series is an insult to reliability and quality. Rust on the seats, all kinds of squeaky noises from different parts of the dash...etc. I guess that's what happens to quality when you add 10 new cars to your range.

@MrPANOSZOZ honestly couldn't care less about what they say. I have to try and see if it's really better than the previous model. I love the e39 and e60, but the f10 didn't move my heart that much. That being said... if i didn't have bought the e60, the f10 would be just has good. Probably i'll buy one when sick of the e60 (unlikely, but never know)
