Hey man! I owned a 2014 LCI 520d with the N47 engine for over 3 years, and I've owned a 2012 328i (Same N20 engine from the 520i) for the past 4 months) The 520d didn't fail on me more than any other car would. It only failed on me once, at it was my own fault for not changing a maintenance item on time (The Pulley which i was supposed to change at 100,000 snapped at 170,000) it was fairly reliable and also great in terms of fuel consumption. The N20 Petrol engine however, I can't say the same thing. I've not had a good experience with it yet (the previous owner had not maintained the car properly). For both Cars, I'd say how the car was previously maintained matters a lot. So make sure you get the car you're planning to buy checked thoroughly by an expert. And keep some money on the sidelines for anything that could potentially come up. I can't say BMW's nowadays are unreliable or tend to fail more often, because in my opinion it all comes down to how the driver maintains and drives the Car, and that in my opinion is the case for any Car. You're gonna really enjoy driving the 5 Series at the end of the day, they are fantastic Daily's to drive. Congratulations on the purchase you're gonna make. All of this is just my own experience and opinion though. Please seek a more expert advice before making a decision.

I'm sitting at 250000km and runs perfectly. Engine never been touched. Oil changes and glee.

@@JR-tl8tg if you can opt for a 6 cylinder 3ltr version as they tend to hold up quite well. If you opt for a 4 cylinder turbo 2ltr and its covered more than say 80k miles your probably going to need to consider putting a few grand extra up encase of a turbo/fuel pump fail. I would ideally be looking for a car that has had its timing chain and guides replaced as the N47 engine has a history with these snapping. The main reason is due to extended oil changes so if the previous owner has been changing oil and filters every 5-6k miles this would be a sign of a good looked after engine. So be looking for a full service history and if it's been self serviced the owner should have all the receipts to prove they carried out the work. Hope this made sense if you have any questions just holler me.

I have 520 d (15 plate ) Same- oil change , fuel etc. Lovely car- I loved

I own 2011 520d since it came out and issues I had so far is oil cooler leaks (twice), Turbo failed at 150k kms, timing chain replacement at 100k, and clogged DPF but fuel is crap where I live so thats not a common issue other than that it has been perfectly reliable now at 245k kms. I also change oil every 6000km and coolant flushed every 1-2 years and other fluids

The Diesels are definitely amazing with consumption and reliability! I've recently switched to petrol myself and I kinda regret it 😅

Can i ask you what are your consumption in the city alone with 530xd? I would like to upgrade my a6 c6 quattro to bmw but i kind of dont want to have rear-wheel driving car, as i got used to 4x4. Please let me know what are your real consumptions city/ highway at 130kmh and etc if you can. (Not computer, but real calculations from full tank to full tank, as computer usually shows 0.5-1l in car's favor).

@@ignaskybransas926 1. my car is tuned @ 330hp. 2. city ~ 8.5 L 3. highway @ 130kmh ~7L-7,5L (light Sommer wheels ) and winter 8-9 L with the heavy m351 wheels. Overall mix ~ 7,9 L atm.

@@gavthegunner14 LCI=2014 and later. Never had a issue on my 2014 N47TU with 150k km. Been stage 2 for 25k km. No rattle or slack as yet.

@@lyallfraser3535 LCI is 63 plate onwards. The b47 engine is in 64 plate onwards cars. Just because your n47 hasn't had chain issues yet, doesn't mean others haven't

Honestly quite hard to find good, trustable dealers. I have no recommendations for dealers but if can spare a little bit more money, go with BMW Premium Selection! They do quite a bit to restore the cars to good conditions and they do provide some warranty with the car you're buying!

My 530d F11 with the optional adaptive drive handles amazingly well for a tourer. What with its Dynamic damper control, active anti roll bars and electronic adaptive suspension, it corners totally flat. Also the 3 litre 6 pot engine suits the ZF8speed auto box really well and surprises many off the lights.

@@AJDrives 520d B47 is great engine. 230 is just right. My friend tunned it to 280 but i wouldnt force it that much.

The B47 engines are built really well! I haven't experienced the Tuned version yet though! Going to experience one soon 👌🏼
