Focal Berylium tweeters are amazing. Same as there home audio stuff. Surprised on the subwoofer choice but cant go wrong with JL still. Figured it would be another Focal sub or something a bit fancier. Still good choice, I'm dying to watch the rest of these vids in the series now :)
Franks Life Changes no surprise on the JL, nothing else could fit under the panel in the trunk, that simple. Btw most subs can sound as good as what the tuner dials into the DSP, so.. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey pete I totally agree with you to have a good system without the install it's not cheap, I did the whole sound deadening which took 2 weeks 8 hours a day, with 80 to 120 mil and ccf $350, the two mmatts6150 amplifiers $ 2,315 , plus a mmatts md4100 for shakers $299, pioneer avh501ex with miracast and simple cables to be able to mirror phone on screen $375, 3 way up front , wideband with center channel and a pair of height tweeters, the rear has a midbass with a wideband. All cdtaudio wideband, tweeters midbass ,then a 12 inch in a prefab box modified with braces and sound deadener, and now ( jesus) zapco hdsp$2000, so when all done ,about $5000 to $6000, because I didnt include, the two batteries which add another $350, ohhh, I bought something similar to the connection distributor box , $45, and Isolator by stinger $65, ferrels, crimpers ,cables, wires, tech flex, $100 more, since all is in the back of the car, plus a basic install ,just oem ,stealth, in the rear cubby storage of the 2017 toyota prius v, $1,700, it's not cheap, after all this time I finally have almost all the equipment, is it worth, I believe so and even my lady agrees, she loves music, videos and movies, and we drive a lot so in six months of use we get all that money back in pleasure, plus forgot to include the bass shakers, from $50 to $250 each depending on model, my worry is to buy a used zapco hdsp v and save like $500, should I just buy it new , the 16 channel with bluetooth module, I'll be using my old fiio x5 with coaxial , I'm scared to buy used for being cheap and get something that wont last.
It's a shame you won't be able to see those middbass drivers under the seat, they look really sweet. I've been dreaming of putting a pair of those 13t jl subs under my truck seat. Looks like it's going to be another proper mad build Peter. Can't wait to see the completion.
I'm confused... don't you need to have midrange drivers to be somewhat facing the listener? Subwoofers, sure, but surely midrange sound waves need to point towards the ears?
OK when I said midrange, I was just speaking loosely. . But my question still stands. Only subs get omnidirectional right? So an 8" putting out 200 to 500+ would still sound muffled under a seat, no? Not sure where those 8s are crossing over to up top, but I just don't understand how their intended range can deliver accurate sound bouncing under and through a car floor and seat.
@@i_kill_for_zardoz if your system is tuned right, all of the speakers play together in their perspective ranges. If you were listening to the midbass alone it might sound as you say "muffled "..but once the system is tuned and playing together, it sounds amazing. Have you watched all of Peter's videos on sound quality in cars? If you have not, I suggest you go to the begging of the series and watch all of them. You will learn a lot and get a better understanding of how it all works.
Really looking forward to this one! Even as much so as coming down to see you to improve the tune on my current build and do the entire build on my next one when I trade in my BMW for a new model in March!!
@@pssound9749 Still saving the pennies!! Although after gaining some good results from another tuning session I did over the weekend, I know there is so much more to be extracted from my current setup with your extensive knowledge and experience. That's before I even start planning the next build on the new car I haven't even ordered yet! For which I'll look to take your recommendations and lead on it. I'll drop you an email request tomorrow as right now I need to stop watching and liking your videos and go to bed :D
Hi, really cool channel with lots of good info. Thanks I'm looking at using a zapco dsp-iv ii with a kenwood 5volt out head unit and a focal fpx 5.1200 amp can you see any problems with the dsp and upto 5 volts from the head unit. Thanks. Seen a few things on the net that makes me concerned about lack of input gain with the zapco.
Raymond C it’s the amount of misinformation is what the real issue is and the lack of knowledge to setup systems properly! I’ve sold probably 30 DSP Z8-IV II, installed and tuned plenty of them and it’s an absolutely joy to work with! 👌
Hello. Please tell me if the monoblock phoenix gold titanium 2500.1 can play well with the Alpine SWX 1043d subwoofer ?? Or recommend a good SQ pairing. Thank you.
Would you use Focal Utopia M 3 way or Morel ELATE 93A 3 way running off a Mosconi 5/30 amp? I already have the two jl 13w5's under my back seat. Also any need to have 6 1/2's in the rear doors? Or will that ruin the SQ? I am installing this in a F150 Crew cab. The JL 13's are amazing btw.
Martin Benning many people says that, but we’ll see how it goes! 👌 Also, what other sub would you use that can work in a shallow space and 0.8cuft box with decent output potential too?
@@pssound9749 it might take a day or two to find, but I would go with a 12” Aliante or Alto Mobile Falstaff. I’ve used both and both are extremely detailed and transparent. Again might take some time to find but it would be worth the wait if it were my car. Just my $.02. Great work BTW! Very nice builds!!
Martin Benning i used to have Aliante and i can only agree with you, but finding one in a GOOD STATE is the real issue! We need something from current product line. 👌🤷🏻♂️
Excited to see how everything works out! What is the best file format to use with the BMW system? I hear FLAC but bits rates etc? Is that convertible from CD?
@@pssound9749 I see this build is all dedicated large amps and DSP but three questions came to mind after the last BMW build. 1) In your opinion, how much SQ would be gained over the factory HK (and left on the table vs going full active) if using a DSP AMP (like Arc, Helix V8, V12, or Zapco) running the door's mid and tweeter passive as from the factory (presumably with only a cap to crossover the tweeter and nothing to low pass the mid) VS running active on this two drivers? Individual time alignment seems less important relative other vehicles as the distance between the mid and tweet in the same doors is quite small. Lack of low pass crossover on the mid I'm not so sure about though. Leaving two drivers playing a good bit of overlap and no way to roll off the breakup of the 4" mid. (Low pass in the amp of course. 2) What are your feelings on the Arc vs Helix vs Zapco DSP amps? (Aside from the fact that Helix has a 12 channel model while the rest are 8 and the Zapco has a high-res HD Player. Are there other strengths or weaknesses? To go full active the Helix V12 would be required. The 8 channel models would be fine is passive as well as significantly reducing install time at the cost of some tuning restrictions. BONUS: Do any of these companies make a multi channel amp without the DSP so the you could use a standalone DSP but still highly efficient / small foot print (both physical and budgetary) amplification. My thought is upgradability with this route. Where as an integrated DSP amp is scrapped if you decide that you want to upgrade as it doesn't have full line outs to convert the system.
ccvideotech jeeez man, this was long to read! 😳😖😃 I’m not sure i can answer everything when i’m about to crash out! 🛌 1. Fully active always have benefits, but most people can’t tune and get better results than having the mid&high passive. If anything, at least you can set levels independently, which is enough on it’s own for me to do it, BUT then you also need extra cable into the door which is major PITA! 2. There is no multi channel amp without DSP, only few options which can be stacked and then they use slightly less space, but not as little as a multi channel amp+DSP. You can do great job with those pocket rocket 🚀 D-class amps + DSP if you get a proper tune on the system! 👌🤘
@@pssound9749 kinda what I figured. Thanks for sharing your insite. I come from the 90s-early 2000s when we were just starting to except class d for subs. I always ran full active with stand alone dsp (Sony ES) and multiple 2-channel A/B amps even back then. Rerurning to the scene wrapping my brain around a singe 12"x12" box running a 14 channel system. Cheers, get some rest👍
Hey peter very nice build! In your tuning videos though, I was always wondering why you never mention things other than EQing? Things like limiters, time delays, phase processings etc. Is it that the DSP's don't have these settings, or that these settings don't matter all that much, or that it's just something that you don't wish to share for free? I always think of the limiter/compressor as a necessary process for any kind of audio application, I'd like to hear your experienced opinion on that. Best regards!
Ali Mahdavi next tuning video will explain how many things i never mention, because as u feel it too, i don’t give everything away! 👌 Compressor in my world is the worst enemy, unless you want to build a system for a club against red tilting DJs! 😃
@@pssound9749 Hahaha yea it beats the heck out of sound quality when it activates, but at the end of the day you have to protect those valuable drivers and amps against long-term abuse. It may be my personal feelings, but every time I hear a driver distorting I deeply fear😂 . Edit: I do believe that the designer should always leave as much headroom so the compressor never activates at normal use, but not always do you have the resources to do so. Like in the club scenario you've mentioned.
@@pssound9749 The fact that you don't wanna give away all your experiences is totally understandable. How about phase processing? I've heard you can flatten the spacial peaks and nulls (standing waves/room modes) that ore otherwise uncontrollable in any room. In your videos I've seen you work your way around standing waves by choosing crossovers wisely and EQing locally at the listening position. Phase processing (the way I've heard it) can give you a spacially flatter response and make your day a lot easier. Check out Dr. Earl Geddes' works, He's got his PhD on the subject.
Anand Shah yes, but needs very specific installation! In a car it’s about location and application and if the specs of the drivers don’t suit the application, then it doesn’t matter how good those speakers are in a bookshelf or floorstander at home.
That will be one of more expensive builds. The drivers look nice but it depends how they perform 🤔 will need to wait for your opinion after build 🙂 it is nice that there is enough space to hide all of that equipment at the back. Will look like OM. I hope helix or mobridge will soon release most 150 adapter box that I can get signal from my car. It dose flac too and its more convenient then connect my phone to dsp 😁
@@pssound9749 really? I have emailed them in the beginning of the summer and helix said they don't have any plans on supporting it. At least for now. Mobridge said to me that they have for Mercedes and BMW but not for Audi. They are waiting to get some software from audi 😒 Are you sure that it would work ? I have 2015 a7. It runs software of MHI2 . That would be great. I could get rid of off my boss amp and have some space for a biger amp 🤣
Hello PETER I want to know on your opinión what is the Best way to use a Fiio m6 with tidal for sound quality. 1- connect directly from the fiio to the dsp with the AUX - RCA cable . 2 - Connecting the fiio passing for the pioneer head unit with aux connection. And why should i use your way. Greatings from México. I hope one day to meet you. You do the Best proyects!
Ivan Ibarra if you have a DSP, then keep the signal flow and conversions from digital to analog and back minimal, so just go straight to the DSP and bypass the HU! I haven’t used/sold a HU for 5 years! 😃
@@pssound9749 Peter! Thanks for your interesting channel. I really like your projects and your creativity. I am struggling with the choice between Brax dsp on ak 4490 or Zapco hdsp v on Ess 9038. What would you advise me. Thanks in advance for your valuable answers.
DS 1 we used the Brax this year and unfortunately we’ve had issues with it, still have issues with it so much so that it’ll be taken out as AF can not resolve it. 😖 I’m sure / i hope others have more success with it...
Hey Peter hope you're doing well. Every time I look at the world's best OEM sound systems vs. SQ builds like yours, a question always pops into my mind: why do OEM systems have soooo many channels? It's crazy! 13, 17 even 21 channels advertised... Is it only a marketing gimmick or are they on to something here? . PS: I'm a huge fan of point sources, not spread out speakers here and there. That is, unless the speakers form a meaningful array e.g. a line array.
Ali Mahdavi i can not really comment on the OEM side, but anyone can tell that inexperienced people can wave their willy with how many speakers they have! 😃 We’ll run 10ch here too. 👌🔊🔊
Anything can get louder from more power, but how musical it stays with low distortion figures is a different story. Both of these options can cause hearing loss.
Leonard Slade we know that we may need another option, but we wanted to try squeezing everything under the floor. If it’s not ticking the boxes for the owner, than we’ll try something else or different install too. 👌
@@pssound9749 sound quality was good but didn't seem to play solid low notes I did try in a .5 and .75 and 1 cubic foot box my amp was class H 500 watts sq amplifier and for 650 dollars I've had 200 dollar subwoofer that sounded much better all had upgraded electrical sound deadening though out. Hope this helps. It was not terribly just not a good value
Leonard Slade i think here you pay for the technology more than anything, being so slim. If we had the option for a full-depth sub, we’d 💯 use something else! 🔊
