BMW 6-Series Hidden Water Drain - The E-BOX one!

The BMW 6-Series E63/E64 water drains are absolutely awful and it is so easy to fill the cabin or boot up with water - and that takes a long time to clean up! It is so easy to end up with a damp cabin and water in the boot and this video will show you how to stop this happening
On my last video about the water drains I said I didn't know where the E-Box drain is - so didn't clear it. Fortunately, in the comments someone kindly commented on where it is - so off I go in search of it. And I'll tell you this much, it doesn't look like a water drain!

This is great help for alot of BMW owners. A good sign moisture has entered the Ebox is the Ebox fan will set a fault code showing a short to ground or open. The high end BMW's pump cold air from the AC into the box. Another source of condensation. I went thru 2 ebox fans before I figured this one out. I live in a humid climate and some of the AC condensation ends up in the Ebox. On my E70, I had to drill a very small hole in the very bottom of the ebox close to the ebox fan. If you see a rusty bottom in the ebox, this may be the source.

Hi Timm, I had water around the e box. Not caused any problem, but does worry me. I have taken a spray head off of a windowlene bottle and extended the tubing. I used it as a pump to pull the water out. Wish I knew how to unblock the drain. I had the e box open a couple of years ago to do valve cover gaskets. I’m sure some wires come up through the bottom and into the IVM module. If the ebox sits in water too long, it’s bound to get in. Great video by the way👍
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
The drain is accessible from underneath in the wheel well as shown in the video - there's not much room but you should be able to get it clear

Tim, as always, GREAT video. Thank you for all the time you take to put these videos together so that all of us that have a 650i can benefit from your knowledge. I have never cleaned my drains but the car is always garaged. I will clean them after all the leaves come off the trees this month. Many thanks again, Tim.

Greetings Timm, love your beautifully narrated and informative videos.I purchased my first BMW several days ago, an E63 BMW645ci, 2004. Prior to this I had taken many other cars for test drives, but liked the handling, luxury and power of this vehicle. Having some basic car knowledge (gleaned mainly through Japanese car ownership) I thought I'd be able to run basic maintenance and repairs myself. However the saying that German vehicles are over engineered certainly became apparent within the short time I've owned this car.Your humorous, yet no nonsense DIY tutorials have helped explain a lot of the strange and new systems I am encountering.A huge thank you for the effort you have put into making these and the assistance you have provided not only me but many other BMW owners.

A really useful video, I wish you'd been posting a few years ago when I first got my E63. It would have helped me diagnose the flooding of the cabin which was due to a blocked drain under the brakebooster. Keep posting. :o)

I'm going to be having a look at this shortly. a few months ago i took out 9 litres of water out of my rear drivers footwell, yes NINE, (glad I'm parked on a slight incline) removed all seats and the rear part of the carpet and let it dry, took ages, the drivers side turned out to be the drain under the brake booster,. drivers side nice and dry now even with the lots of rain we have had, but the passengers side is a tad soggy :(, so out the passenger side seat out again , its either that or a failed door membrane , more investigation required, but now i know where the passenger drain hole is

Hello Timm, wanted to take the time to show some apreciation for the videos you've been doing. They've proven to be very useful and helping me with learning to take proper care of my e63. Hence why I also had an idea for another video. I was wondering if you could do a comprehensive owners guide for all recommended maintenance tips, such as when you change your oils and all the good details like what's shown on this video. I'm sure it would be super helpful for all the upcoming and present owners of these beautiful machines. Wishing you a great 2021. Greetings from Finland.

Brilliant, just what I wanted to see and understand.. I had cleaned out the brake servo side on my E63, and yes it had about 2” of water in it, enough for a 🐠 what a silly design! I just pulled the rubber bung and have left it out now. The wing ‘leaf catcher’ was full of mulch, so I blasted it with the hose. It was the E box side that had me a bit stumped..until now, so thanks for the video, much appreciated 👍🏼

Hi Tim, another helpful video, I had a shock when my e63 driver side footwell and the passenger footwell was absolutely drenched to my horror, always kept my car parked on a downward slope just in case there was a blockage etc just to minimise any risk of water coming in if there was a blockage somewhere, just this one time on holiday in October last year where the car was parked on a slight incline nose up and after a through wash with a outside hose, a luxury I don't have at home. I have always kept the 2 side scuttle valves clear of leaves and crap but traced back the blockage to under the brake servo, where the area under the servo the paint had been eaten away and blocked the small drain, no doubt from where progressive dealerships had not been careful enough when filling the reservoir and the brake fluid has dripped/spilled causing the problem, am really angry and upset as I keep my car as in good a condition as I can, I spoke to my current bmw dealer BMW park lane who have just gone silent after deciding to tell them as they were the last people to do the brake fluid change in fact the car has never been outside the network and they should take ownership of the problem only because it took 2 months for me to get the last of the water out in this cold weather and because of the potential damage to the subwoofer/amplifier under my seat. Just something else you may find helpful. The service advisor claimed that they don't fill the fluid fro up there but at the bleed nipples by the wheels which sounds like crap imho.

Thanks! The plan is to get them clean to start with - I use 'Wonder Wheels' which is a strong solvent but cannot be used all the time as it is vicious! I then just use normal car washing liquid on a microfibre sponge twice a week - and that keeps them looking great. If any brake dust builds up out comes the Wonder Wheels again

Hi Tim..I've noticed on my 2010 E64 635D LCI that rain water is not finding an egress point. Drivers side..where the roof closes and meets the corner rubber cup housing situated up in rh side of the bodywork around the.front window screen. So water is dripping in over the window control point on the driver door. Any suggestion for where a secret drainage point is or which drainage point may be blocked... Cheers

@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 4 года назад
No, I've only ever worked on my own cars! If you have one sensor that fails then the whole system will stop working - you need INPA to find which one - or, stick your ear against each one and listen for the clicking, the one that doesn't click needs to be replaced.

Thank you
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 4 года назад
Hello, I would go for INPA diagnostics next - it will pinpoint which system is not working, it can check the i-drive controller inputs (which might be the problem) - much cheaper than switching parts around!

@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 4 года назад
That is normal behaviour - the DTC system reduces power and inhibits gear changes on corners, once you are out of the corner it will behave as normal allowing more power and down-changes. This has been the case since E31 days. Turning off the DTC gets things back to how you would expect, but don't do it, these cars just love going sideways without DTC!

Ok tried that and water flows and exits the rear wheel arch when you pour down windscreen on both sides driver and passenger Under brake booster no wells or water seems dry mechanic says. Pouring down windows haven’t seem water pour into footwell unless it seeps under carpet? Mechanic is puzzled not sure where the access is. Says could be lights anything where it’s coming and maybe needs all plastics off to see. We have no sunroof too.
