BMW Airhead Rear End Oil Leak! 

I happen to own that Bike in the video and was able to get out on a ride for the first time since purchasing it 3 weeks ago. Man does it ride sweet. The carb work that was also done has it running tip top. Tic over is consistent and strong and fueling is great through mid range and high revs. Nice work on this video you make it look easy and explain the job well.

Regarding the swing arm, you should be holding the preload pin in place as you tighten the outer nut. Cut a "window" into the side of the socket so you can fit the Allen wrench inside it while tightening.

Great video - I followed this to remove & replace my drive boot ('89 R100RT). I'll comment that the metal-to-metal surface between the rear drive bevel (i.e., the rear drive differential) and the drive shaft (where the 4 bolts connect the two parts) leaked upon reassembly - just a drop or two every day or so. So, I again took those apart and cleaned them very well and upon reassembly, I applied a thin layer of Loctite 518 Gasket Maker. I also researched the torque specs for those four bolts and upped them to 40 ft lbs from the 25 ft lbs you recommended (at the 11:00 minute mark in the video). I see in the Haynes Manual (0249) for the BMW R100RT 1987 and up, list a torque spec recommendation of 39-48 ft. lbs so maybe you have a misprint on your recommendation of 25 ft. lbs. in the video? Snowbum’s writings also seem to recommend 40 ft. lbs. So far, after several days, it remains dry. Looking at the microfiche, it seems odd that BMW didn't put a thin paper gasket between those mating surfaces. If it leaks again, that would be my next move. Have you run into this in the past? First of all, thank you for this video, it helped me with my recent driveshaft boot change on my R100. However, trying to get that rubber boot back on both sides at the end is an absolute nightmare. Finally got it after a few beers while screaming the song "John Deere Green" with some help from my girlfriend. 🤣🤣🤣

you don't have to remove the final drive from the swing arm . i even leave the wheel on and still able to remove the whole assembly without problem .

I thought it was the transmission oil that leaked through the output shaft oil seal

are you suggesting its the boot which is causing the leak? seems to me its the gear box seal leaking the one that the boot is supposed to be protecting.or am I mistook? Apologies if I am

What year is this bmw you worked on? Dont you need a Swing Arm Gasket for your model or the vedio didn’t capture it?

Do you not have to grease splines or add any final drive oil on these?

A BMW leaking oil !?!? No way !!!

There are easier ways to do this job. Pulling the tire and final drive aren't part of them.
