Great video, what is your oppinion about the Mann filter?

I did 4 oil changes with the mann filter and none of them broke.. because b58 engines get hot the oil filter or the housing breaks its common.. i change every 10.000Km my oil and never had problems, so its probably people who dont do allot of oil changes..

The filter failures are due to poor design. You might be able to reduce the risk by careful lubrication of the O-rings or indeed, with more frequent changes but the vulnerability to catastrophic failure remains until such time as BMW address the appalling design of their filter. Sadly, many aftermarket designs will likely be based on the original OEM spec and using a non-OEM filter is an even bigger gamble. This Mahle filter for example has failure designed into it. If I’m honest, I suspect that more frequent oil changes does nothing more than expose you to the same risk but more frequently. You are going to get your a*rse bitten sooner or later. 😢 BMW have now released a fourth redesign and I will be pulling one apart for review in the next few days. Watch this space!!! 😬

Thank you for a great video and advise. I wonder if a company will make a decent filter that will not fall apart. I am taking my M240i to BMW for service in a few weeks, it was only done a year ago and about 15k miles.

@@dangdong3832 . . . . hopefully the video is clear if you watch it through. It would seem that neither the Mann or BMW OEM filter are perfect but both are much better than the Mahle filter tested in this video. I would not advise you to use Mahle based on my experience as I feel it is very likely to break when removed.

Got a MAHLE that was made in 2024 Feb, looks exactly the same as the one you got, probably going to the trash then.

Hi there - I emailed Mahle about the design of their filters being prone to collapse on removal and they thanked me for letting them know. They said they would look at it but I suspect the response was corporate BS. If your Mahle was manufactured in 2024, it would be very interesting to know if they have modified the design or merely sat on their corporate backsides!!! Cut off the base and see if it is toothed to the central tube to help resist rotation - if it isn’t and is just a flush fit, relying on the strength of the paper element to resist twisting, then the best thing you can do is dispose of it in the junk as that is what it will turn your car into!!! 😡

@@ybliga i can twist it and I can feel the slop with the filter media intact. That filter is going to the trash.

@@coalieroller5663 stick to OEM. I recently changed my OEM filter without issue. After I removed it I attempted to twist it and break it by hand - it had been installed for two years. I was easily able to break the base free from the central tube but the paper element held firm. I applied loads of force but it refused to pull apart. I suspect BMW have upgraded the “paper” element and made it stronger and far less prone to tear if the cap breaks free from the central core!! 👍

@@ybliga Thats good news, mine has a freshly installed oil filter housing since it was leaking at 3 years old and 19k mi. So wish me luck on removing that oil filter. Probably sticking to the OEM BMW in this case. My oil/ filter will not be on extended drain interval thanks to the shitty fuel in California, higher sulphur levels than EU, lower octane (91 AKI, call it 95 RON if you want) and its E10 regardless.

@@coalieroller5663 It’s interesting these oil filter housings that break and develop leaks. Loads of peeps think it is due to temperature cycles but I’m unconvinced and suspect it is due to the stresses incurred on the filter housing body when tightening the filter cap, particularly if the tech is a gorilla and hangs off the wrench like King Kong.. The manual calls for a set torque of 25nm but I believe it to be academic as the oil seal is created by the O-ring in the cap and this is independent of the torque when tightening down. I tighten mine to only 15nm and then keep an eye on it - so far so good!!!!
