You should make a list of things that need to be maintained on B58 2/3/440i's, and at what mileage/how long to go between service intervals. As a 340i owner, there is so much conflicting information about maintenance, having you break it down clearly would really help!

Service interval should be between 5K - 10K miles/1 year, whichever comes first. If you drive the piss out of it then 5K, if you driver normal around town then 7.5K, if you drive on the highway a lot then 10K. Do not go beyond 10K and also keep an eye on the oil temps and that will give you a good relative idea of how the oil could be performing. My N55 starts to burn oil between 6K and 8K, which is my cue to change it. The engine has 163K miles and it runs like it did when new.

Motul in its catalog recommends 8100 5w40, in my city the ambient temperatures range between 0º and 40º in winter or summer, it must also be taken into account that my car is modified and it would be ideal to keep the oil pressure stable in conditions of maximum demand with a lot of heat.

Weather is important, living in Florida are summers are very hot, I run 0-30 in my xDrive 440i, no issues, the slightly thicker oil helps combat overheating, heat thins oil and when it's already very hot it can get too thin at 0-20, all shops in hot climates suggest *-30 for summer, most of us running year-round.

Weather doesn't matter. Our cooling system works well whether it's 30F or 100+. And thick oil doesn't combat overheating. You need to improve your cooling system for that.

The reason for 0-20 oils is because of all of the modern automobiles automatic transmissions keep the engine RPMs under 2k at all times when normal driving. Note this, its the key to all of the answers about 0-20 oils. Also all of the modern car engines have short and light pistons that can not be compared with anything that was made in 90s Understood you may race once or twice a week for a brief moment but most of the time your car spends under 2k RPM when normal driven. Why is this important? Because when you drive normally your transmission keeps the RPM low to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy but with it, the actual STRAIN AND PRESSURE on the piston is MUCH HIGHER than if you were spinning the engine at 3-4 k RPM while coasting down street. That increased pressure combined with already light and short piston height causes the piston to wear the cylinder walls faster than it would be on the older vehicles because the older engines had a much higher piston height and higher nominal RPMs. To combat that they had to reduce the spacing between the cylinder wall and the piston, to reduce the side movement of the piston. But because of it, they needed a much thinner oil. If you put a thicker oil in the engine, it will act best under stress but while normal driving, which I assume most do 90% of the time it will actually harm the engine. BMW Engineers arent stupid.

The Deaker told me South Motors they recommend at 60 to 70k to put 0w30. I told they why not 0W30 from the beginning to prevent wear. They Saud I could ask the service dept. to put the thicker oil (0W30), or even 5W30, if I wanted, but the 0W30 flows better . Tgey also told me that the 0W20 provides better gas mileage, wich lead me to believe the thin oil was just for saving gas, but then I run into this video. I'm only at almost 500 miles, and I plan on doing the first change early before 1k, perhaps even a second early one as well, abd then do them 4 to 5 k from then on. Would you advise using heavier weight for higher mileage? I own a 17’ 340ix and MTC records showed that when I bought it in 19’ it had been serviced with 5W-30 it now has over 60K and I never changed to 0W-20 because it had previously been serviced with higher weight and because I don’t know all the ins and outs of it I was afraid to change it. I think if you are in a climate where you don't drive your car in freezing temps then 5W-30 is fine. I also used 0w-20 then 5W40 and now 5W30 just because I like changing things and collecting data. But I wouldn't expect a noticeable difference in performance.

Thanks, kern417. I’ve got a lot of knowledge from your channel about basic technology and mod for B58. Recently I changed oil by myself. I chose ‘Liquimoly synthoil 5w-40’ than ‘Leichtlauf 5w-40’ ,because ‘synthoil’ is advertised as ‘fully synthetic’. But ‘Liquimoly synthoil’ is approved as ‘BMW long life 98’ , not ‘BMW long life 01or 04. Do you think it will cause any trouble? My 340i is tuned by MHD and xHP, catless downpipe, CSF heat exchanger, tuHPFP. MHD setting is ‘stage2 98ron, sport cooling mode’. Oil temp remain under 100°C under street use. I have two questions blow. ①Does ‘BMW long life98 approved oil’ cause an issue on B58? ②’MHD stock cooling mode’ keeps my oil temp around120℃ @10℃ ambient temp. ‘Sport cooling mode’ keeps it under 100℃. Which mode is better for street use?

Agree with what you say, but... If you read thru the various forum boards, guys who routinely analyze their oil get the best results with 0w40 or 5w40 ll-01 spec oil. Then there's the guys who really beat on their turbo engines that swear by rotella 15w40 T6, although it is not ll-01 certified. In the chart that you put up, an oil with a 3.5 High Shear Viscosity or better is where you want to be. Below 2.5 any you are asking for trouble. And remember that oil with miles on it breaks down over time, so you may loose a point after 5000 miles or so.
@kern417
@kern417 2 года назад
I'm not sure where you're getting your info but you absolutely should not run 15w40. Plenty of people get good data with 0w20 as well. Stick with what the engine is designed for and you'll have the best luck.
@codyway7424
@codyway7424 2 года назад
@@kern417 My info comes from the race/drift guys who beat on their oil pretty hard. And yes, the higher shear oils within a given viscosity do consistently exhibit less wear. This is a big reason why Amsoil, Penzoil, and Castroil synthetics generally do well when compared to the rest.
@kern417
@kern417 2 года назад
You can't just go to anyone to get info because they drift their cars. Do they have B58s? Stock engines? Whats their oil change frequency? What oil temps do they see? You're talking about something that doesn't relate to the topic at hand. Running that heavy of an oil on your B58 will ruin it. All you're doing is slowing down the oil's flow when it's cold, which is when the most wear happens. Do more research and you'll understand.

In the fact that this engine is not already standard I recommend to raise to an 5W-40 viscosity for stable oil pressure. Please also check your oil temperature, which should not be higher than 115°C, sometimes 120°C maximum for a short time. If the temperatures are higher, your engine will be damaged in the long term.
