Just done all of these on my bmw. Another one which I found was leaking and needed the seal and gasket replacing was the eccentric shaft sensor. Its next to the oil cap under the plastic cover. When oil leaks into the plug your rev counter will soon jump about and eventually go into reduced power mode. The seal and gasket on cost me £6 from bmw and took 10 minutes to replace.
Seen exactly these on N42 & N46. The chain tensioner bolt might give you a small leak if the washer is wrecked but if it comes loose the it can produce a crazy flow that will empty the engine! The valvetronic motor gasket is another leak point.
Thank you Mark. You're an absolute legend. Just stumbled on your video, binge watched the whole playlist BMW series 1 (accidental purchase). I'm a bit worried to wash my engine bay to get rid of leak residue. Any suggestions?
So glad you enjoyed the series. Sneak peek we gave that car away. Video to come. 😀 Just spray on degreaser and hose off. I don’t recommend a pressure cleaner. Keep the water off the electrical a and the alternator. MRT

Hi Mark, just a quick question, you mentioned that oil could leak on that big silver bolt under coolant pipe to the block, strange enough my e90 320i N46, 2011 model has coolant leak ing out from that bolt. Any suggestions on that as I initially thought that the coolant leak was from that silver covered coolant pipe and replaced with new one and then saw it's actually leak on that big bolt. Is coolant supposed to leak from there? I am worried now as you mentioned on video that oil leaks from there. Is it possible to just get a new bolt rather as my one looks worn out?
@@Marksreviewsandtutorials Thank you Mark. Are the design of engine the same as SA? I checked that pipe above tensioner bolt again and not leaking from there but at the bottom of bolt. Bolt seems to be a little worn out, does not look solid. Think the coolant leaking is corroding bolt.
Great video. Got my e90 320i N46b20b fixed before watching though! Got a brand new OE vacuumpump :) There was a problem. And by myself I fixed the vanos o rings as well as the 2 gaskets at the oilcooler/housing
@@Cosminnegres-qx2uc on this engine, the PCV is integral to the rocker cover - under the round moulding next to the breather pipe connection at the back of the engine cover. There are kits for replacing the valve without removing the rocker cover, but requires cutting and resealing, so may not be a good idea.
Thanks video, I attempted myself today my 2.0i N46 Z4 Took 3 times, terrible leak dripping second attempt, first time missed a collar that had fell in It's so so sealed, looks like a small weap now, than a leak before. Any idea how keep gasket in place when re-fitting, it was hard to maintain in position.
The gasket should sit ok. Make sure it is well cleaned. You can also use a smear of silicone to hold a gasket in place, especially in tight corners. See the video changing tappet cover on n20. BMW Oil Issues Smoking & Leaking ru-vid.com/group/PLRRErA3V0MY1TKWJOU0hPZlqEi98F-A1b
hey i was looking for some information about BMW 320i 2006/ 2007 (110kw/150hp) . Can you please tell me is it expensive to own? i mean ,maintanance, common failures and stuff like that? On top of that ,does he really drink that much petrol ,and should i consider installing LPG? (mostly i drive only in city) .Thanks :)
my N43 is leaking on the left side of the engine, and it seems it's the "option 3" you were talking about; hopefully I'll have just to tighten the bolt; thanks for all the info, it is very informative! on the other note, I have two more problems - I can smell the petrol and on the rainy day I could see how it colors the water on the ground; the other one is that engine somehow losses cooling liquid; still have to find what's the reason and I must admit I fear a little to drive it in that state; and all that struck me all the once, not sure what happened, any idea?
I have found that my cars have always needed maintenance in blocks. They seem to have a few things go wrong at once. Then I get it all fixed up then they are good for awhile. Don’t be slow fixing the fuel leak.
These engines 46 and 46T are prone to oil leaks and at the same time known for high oil consumption. My E90 leaked the oil from all possible places, including Valve Cover, Oil Pan, Camshaft sensor both intake and exhaust, vanos sensors, Oil filter housing, crankshaft as well as Oil pressure sensor underneath. Despite of no oil leak now, every 5K KM i need to add at least 500ml of engine oil to these engine (and yes there is no leak inside, no black or blue smoke on the exhaust)..
Hey Mark, i just bumped into your channel looking for info about oil leak at the oil pan in an N46 engine. You mentioned you have a friend that works on this engines...I recently changed my oil pan gasket because it was leaking but after that it still leaking a little bit at the back corner near the trans. Would you please ask your friend if the replacing of this gasket required to put silicone at the corners? I would really appreciate your help!
Great video. I only had my daughters 2007 320i up on a hoist tonight after degreasing it a while back. I finally snuck in some hoist time from a friend and it’s looking like it’s the part you said was on the back of the head. From underneath looking up I can see some oil on the lower part of that mystery part. I call it a mystery part because I’m an electrical fitter not mechanic.🤷♂️ There was some oil on the sump gasket bolts and gasket, on the driver (lower) side of the engine. It still could be coming from that part above so I wanted to look into it first. I’d love any additional info on that part if you (or anyone else) has it? Is it easier enough to get to from above, is it a gasket ( I think you called it an O ring in the video🤔 Any help will be greatly received👍 I need this oil leak fixed so the car can be registered for my daughter (who at 17 thinks her life is slipping away) while she waits for me to repair the car she purchased😬
Hi, thank you very much. I checked all the points mentioned in the video, but mine leaks apparently at the bottom passenger side. Any suggestion? Thanks
Hi the leaking gaskets isn’t the main problem with these engines. It is if the valve stem seals fail. BMW blowing smoke? Valve stem seals the definitive test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R3NrMnl2Py0.html If the valve stems seals are solid or have been replaced then these engines are great. I have had 6 BMW’s with different variances of these engines. MRT
My 120d 2011 plate keeps getting oil going over the top and runs down to the back in line with the plug harness did look at the oil cap lock look like you have a grove that makes the oil run out the filler cap neck then run down over the top

I would check higher first. Check the vac pump above that point. But look at my head gasket video on this engine and you’ll see we used silicone on the corners there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LtfOHglVVIk.html
@@Marksreviewsandtutorials Hey, thanks for the reply. I did change the VCG about 6 month ago and i already checked the other common failure points of leaks above. Vacuum pump looks ok though. That’s why i was concerned about the use of silicone in the corners of the oil pan gasket (which i did not use) but i wanted to know if maybe i should have.
I've got the same engine n46nb20 and they starting to have blue smoke when accelerate from a stop and has a burnt oil smell from exhaust. Do you have that problem? A lot of people saying it's the valve stem seal. What does your bmw mechanic friend think about using 5w-40 instead of 5w-30?
Thicker oil isn't a good idea in a BMW it can muck up the Vanos. Watch this video to check your valve stem seals ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R3NrMnl2Py0.html
@@Marksreviewsandtutorials thanks Mark. I've seen thay video and it terrifies me because the amount of work to replace them and I don't have BMW mechanic friend and the repair will probably cost more than the car itself. At the moment, I've ordered new PCV breather thank to you and also using liqui moly engine resealer. Though, I've only driven the car for 350km I've seen significant improvement as there is no more smoke on low rev. I thought to continue with liqui moly and another 5L 5w-30 and then decide.
Hi@@damiann4734 , i have exactly the same issue. how did the liqui moly work out for you a year later? i have gotten a new pcv breather and also could you please share a link to the luqui moly you got?
@damiann4734 Did the valve stem repair fix the issue permanently? Also I have a rough idle and and fluctuating rpms as I am decelerating to traffic stops, did you experience this too? The smoke comes when the engine has warmed up, usually when Ive driven a couple of miles. I have the exact same engine like you.
