Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. My e90 320i has always had that cold start rattle and low oil pressure (5 years) and I always thought it was the vanos. I took the oil filter housing and cooler apart and found that they were both saturated with broken pieces of timing chain guides. Needless to say.. the check valve was completely seized. I did valve stem seals twice in the last 5 years (the valve guides were shot as well) I really think that this causes them to fail prematurely.

Great video, super in depth! Recently replaced the alternator, and had to remove the airbox as well. However, that small vaccum hose was very brittle and it probably broke while i pulled it out.. I tried to repair it with some cable insulation and zip ties, but its probably not 100% sealed. What sort of issues can I expect from it not being properly connected?
@BimmerZen
@BimmerZen 2 года назад
That vacuum hose leads to the fuel pressure regulator that is integrated in to the fuel filter. You can expect overpressure in the fuel feed line and probably rich idle and lean on the higher power requirement. Overpressure can result in damage to the fuel system.

Does your gaskets hold the oil well and it does not leak? Because I've changed the gasket like 2 times and it still leaks about a tea spoon per half year. So I wonder should I change once again but this time in addition to new gasket use some liquid sealer that suits the purpose? Could you share your opinion?
@BimmerZen
@BimmerZen Год назад
I'm not having any issues so far, but I don't drive the car daily anymore, so I cant be 100% sure it doesn't leak... I don't recommend using any kind of sealer or silicone on the oil filter housing as the excess silicone will break off and go past the oil filter and in to the engine and clog oil lines.
@mr.matiss
@mr.matiss Год назад
@@BimmerZen N42 engine is my daily choice, so I'd be happy to stop this leak. If I use some sort of strong, meant to be used for engine gaskets sealant and use it just a tiny bit to stop the leak. Would you still think it can get in to the engine? Also I believe there is positive pressure at the inside of oil housing that would push any sealant outwards. If you still does not recommend it. Should I just keep buying new gaskets until I get the one that fits perfectly?

Thanks for this video! Are you sure 10nm is correct for these bolts? I bolted mine to 11nm.. and its leaking again. I did clean the sufaces and replaced with a new gasket. On some forum I read people are torqing to 22nm and the issue was solved for them.. Is yours still holding up?
@BimmerZen
@BimmerZen Год назад
The documentation states 22 Nm but also M8 bolt. But the bolt is infact M6 and those are usually 10Nm. The seal is inside a channel and is sandwiched between housing and engine block. I dont think torqueing the bolts to 22nm will help much with compressing the seal. but you could try tho. Mine is holding up so far, but I do not drive the car daily.

Hi,do u know if the gasket between the oil cooler can be the problem with oil mixing in the coolant reservoir? I’ve looked under the engine oil cap and there’s no sign of that there is any water in the oil but somehow oil gets to the coolant :/ . I don’t think it’s a head gasket , maybe there’s something easier to fix ;O My engine is n46b20a
@BimmerZen

That gasket is not sealing oil/coolant. It could be the oil cooler itself. You can probably test the oil cooler.

You basically need to remove the intake manifold (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uB77ykvf5iI.html) to get to the sensor.

@@BimmerZen thanks so much! We burned some midnight oil to get the intake off. Actually removed the steering backed and bottom plates to get to the screws on the bottom of the intake. Struggled allot because we where missing allot of tools. But everything is working perfect now! Started with the valve seals, removed the head, cleaned it, surfaced it, new valve springs, then chain, replaced the coils, waterpump, cleaned out the double VANOS, accidentally mixed the connectors of the 2 VANOS actuators, that came with a heep of trouble. Did the belt, tensioner and dynamo. Filters fluids sensors ccv everything has been touched and replaced right before the 250k mark. Now focusing on the undercarriage, replacing everything with new. No. Does your coolant level change? Probably just moisture in the oil from short distance driving in cold climate... Here is an example: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4U-4kKXzfwc.html
