BMW E30 5 Lug Conversion Guide For Rear | How To 5 Stud Swap E30 + Rear Suspension Install | 023
In this BMW E30 build video, I detail the method of 5-lug swapping the rear end of the car.
Having spent many hours working on this rear end, and getting into the reassembly phase, I decided to take the opportunity to five lug swap this rear end as I'm putting it back together.
Here are all the parts I used in this video:
1. E90 5x120 Rear Hub x2: ebay.us/VSoN9Q
2. Rear brake caliper adapters from SRS Concept: ebay.us/Uigxzy
3. Rear calipers and carriers from a 6cyl E46 or Z4: ebay.us/1EwBHy
4. Rear discs from a 6cyl E46 (294mm vented): ebay.us/psXtqU
5. Wezmoto E30 Inner rear brake lines: ebay.us/qEnkSk
6. Wezmoto E30 front brake lines (used as outer rears): ebay.us/p5oE51
7. HSD Monopro Coilovers (although not necessary for the swap): www.driftworks...
8. 5x120 16" Style 5 Wheels from an E38 7 series: ebay.us/mGJk3F
9. Appropriate tyre sizes, I went with 215/45R16: ebay.us/SGQSdE
I believe this method is the easiest and cheapest way to do an E30 5 stud swap on the rear. But it's worth noting that if your E30 is a 4 cyl standard model (not a 318is as they have discs all round) it will come with rear drum brakes. If this is you, your first task will be to acquire standard E30 rear disc arms, which 6 cylinder and IS models came equipped with as standard.
The E90 rear hubs are a straight fit up with the E30 rear wheel bearing, so you simply need to swap the old 4 stud hubs for these new 5 stud ones. I used a press to do this.
Be aware, to do this swap you also need to modify your rear brake shield by trimming it down to accommodate the larger rear caliper in a higher position, and bending the outer rim flat, to accommodate the larger diameter brake disc. I have a previous video with more details about doing this, which is here: • Brake Shield Clearance...
I mention this now, because you must install the brake shield before pressing on the hub, as the hub will obstruct you from fitting this shield later, which I found out the hard way.
With the E30 disk rear arms fitted, the brake shields modified, and the E90 hubs pressed on, you're pretty much all set to finish the 5 lug conversion. The next step would be to fit up the original E30 handbrake mechanism which will work perfectly with your new E46 discs.
In my video I had not yet received all of the handbrake parts to do this section so I skipped over it and moved straight on to fitting the larger E46 brake disc and larger E46 rear calipers, which is done via the SRS Concept brake caliper adapter.
The SRS Concept caliper adapters come in raw steel as standard, so I had taken the time to powder coat them silver to avoid them rusting straight away and dragging down my otherwise completely fresh rear end.
With the new calipers fitted up with the caliper adapters, I then fitted my new Wezmoto braided stainless brake lines. The inner line is the same 22.2mm female to female line which is standard to the E30, linked to above. And the outer Wezmoto line is actually the E30 front size, but used on the rear. The fitment seems good.
Following this, you will want to bleed your new calipers up, but as I am planning to follow up with the front 5 lug swap, which also involves fitting a larger caliper, I will hold off on this, for now, so I moved onto fitting my new HSD Monopro rear coilovers.
Yes I know they're not really "coilovers" on the rear because the spring and damper are separate on an E30, but nevertheless its part of a coilover kit which also includes fronts which have E30 top hats and E36 hub mounts, required for the front 5 stud conversion (subscribe so you don't miss that upcoming video).
As this video isn't about setting up coilovers, I decided to fit them at sensible, tall ride heights, for now, no doubt I will spend hours getting these dialled in, but not today!
With the suspension fitted, I threw on my E38 style 5 wheels and lowered the car down onto the ground for the first time in a very long time. I believe the track width with this conversion is increased by 3mm total, which is not really a noticeable amount, and the IS23 offset wheels seem to sit perfectly flush with the rear arch, which I'm very happy about as a starting point.
I hope this information about the rear E30 5 stud conversion has been helpful!
If you're looking for the front 5-stud swap explainer video, here it is: • How To Front 5 Lug Swa...

5lug swapping e30s has got a lot cheaper and easier since i had mine! M3 front struts and e36 compact rear was the 'easy way' back then (i feel old!). Maybe it's time for me to get another one... Anyway thanks for another excellent highly watchable video, RU-vid is feeding me your videos in a slightly random order 😂 but enjoying every one.

Hey Adam, yeah I think this way using non-M parts is a more recent option that makes it way more affordable. The proper way is of course E30 M3 suspension, but thats become unobtainable unless you've very deep pockets, and the E36 M3 parts which are a popular method have gone in that direction too, so this method is a godsend really. Glad you're enjoying the E30 build, check out the playlist if you want to get the vids in the right order: ru-vid.com/group/PLZCsrCcblKI-kadQh8oHd9QrFSAZZVaEd Alternatively the end screen of each video should lead you onto the next one in the series. Cheers Juan, I was just as keen on larger brakes that this swap enables to be honest. As I'm planning to swap a larger engine in, getting rid of the rear drums and upping all the brakes to the appropriate size seemed like a good idea, being able to fit the slightly larger style 5 wheels is a plus, although a very subtle change!

Hi Kristoffer, from my understanding there will be about 3mm more rear track width. So the width change is not very noticeable. But you will not be using standard E30 wheels unless you have the filled and drilled to 5x120. 😆

Good question, I'm not totally sure about that actually. I think the E90 hubs push the rear wheels out slightly, I think 1.5mm each side. This might pose a problem with the caliper fitment and the hand brake shoes. Let me know if you find out, that would be very interesting to know.

Any regrets on going with the HSDs vice other coilovers?
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 11 месяцев назад
Hi Travis, in all honesty I haven't had the car on the road yet to comment on performance or longevity. However, the build quality looks superb for the price point. Bear in mind these are still budget coilovers in the grand scheme of suspension. If they're good enough for Phil Morrison to hammer the Driftworks S65 powered E30 M3 around on, they should be overkill for my humble M52 swapped road car E30. 😂

Sound advice Mate! I’m looking at them and the BC Racing setup however driftworks only delivers the HSDs to me not the BC Racing set and at their prices it’s hard to beat… I’m also considering the GC e30 5 lug swap setup but they’re at $2k… yikes

@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Год назад
Hi mate, the discs selected are specifically to work with the E30's standard handbrake mech with many other rear discs do not. I'm not sure whether the 320mm one you're referring to will, let me know if you risk it and find out! 😃

cool video! i have style 4s which have the exact same specs but therye forged. Do you think 225/45/16 wil fit nice or rub? i dont mind rolling the fenders. Im looking for new tired before i slap the 5 lug on! also i believe this kt]it brings the offset +8 from stock. also whats the most spacer you can run without it rubbing on the 215/45/16 if you dont mind measuring?? thanks!
@Dildology
@Dildology 2 года назад
Any 5 lug option brings the wheels to poke too far in my taste. My set up is the sleeve kit with e46 325i brakes and the rims flush to fender. An ideal case is getting e30 m3 bbk and hub but it cost so damn much.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 2 года назад
Nice style 4s are cool! I think a 225/45 would fit with rolled arches, but to be honest my 215 look like a perfect fit for my tastes. I'm sure I could run a 10-12mm spacer if I wanted more of a poke, but I'm happy for the rim of the alloy to be flush with the arch. It would be a trial and error thing to be certain about the rubbing though so don't hold me to that. My advice is to do the swap with the wheels you have and work on refining fitment later.

@@Dildology Yep E30 M3 parts of any description have gone to the moon unfortunately. It's just not a viable option any more imo.
@Dildology
@Dildology 2 года назад
I might have to pick up some 215/45. I was ideally looking for the most rubber I can fit in the rear but I’d want to rotate my tires as well and 225/45 wouldn’t fit in front from my 5 lug set up. It pokes too much. Would it look weird if I don’t match the offset of the rear with the front? Probably took like a drift set up but I want a square tire and 1 degree of camber max for both front and rear. I don’t like the look of poke too and love that flush look but damn I wish I can afford the e30 m3 option so I can keep my rim in the fender
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 2 года назад
@@Dildology Having the ability to rotate the tyres was a factor for me too. I'm intending to do my front conversion with E36 knuckles so hoping the wheel/tyre combo works perfectly there too. My fingers are crossed on that.

did you use a standard e30 wheel bearing?
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 5 месяцев назад
Yep, the standard E30 wheel bearing worked perfect with the E90 hub for me. But if you use pre-facelift (1984/85) rear trailing arms you might have a problem because the rear wheel bearing size is smaller, so you would need to turn down the E90 hub to work. It's easier to avoid this.

Cheers! Well the splines in the E90/Z4 hub I'm using mate up perfectly with the original E30 drive shafts, so I'm using the ones that came with the car without a problem. I think the answer is yes on the front but it gets a bit more difficult on the rear, I went with the specific size discs to work with the E30's standard handbrake mechanism. I did another video with more detail on the handbrake. Thats the big problem with the rear 5 lug swap using this method.
