In today's episode, I cover the skimming of the engine block, sourcing big end bearings, rod bearings and camshafts and installing the whole lot into the M70, along with new piston rings to boot.
WOW steve what an educated and well informed video on building the bmw 850 engine I have a fast lane magazine from 1991 stating that the bmw 850csi is a techno missile also did you know George Michael had one lovely car lovely build you deserve a Guinness mate after that video 👍👍👍
Im currently about to rebuild my m70 for my e34 touring project. I cannot say how helpful this video has been in preparation. Thank you so much for all the detail! I watched every second. Cant wait for the next.
Amazing video! Please don't worry about making your videos shorter, for me the longer the video, the better. You are so knowledgeable and thorough, it's truly a treat to watch your videos. I feel like you should be a professor at a trade school. Really looking forward to your next video!!!
God bless your damaged heads and you... I find you have to find a mentor shop, but in my town I have not found one. Over time I think you can find what you need. I’ve owned M70 and 73 models. These engines can be found in junk yards at times or purchase a lower milage 750 for very small money. These cars can cost a ton of money to maintain unless you do some of your own work…great video thanks for the education
Hi Steve. Thanks for the great video. Just glad that you're fit and well, one wonders sometimes with long gaps in the uploads. I am struggling with my 840 restoration, there seems to be a lot against me. Primarily health, I'm 71 now and too ill to work on it at times. Also, a problem with the fuel rail has stopped the job in it's tracks. I appear to be the only person in the world to have had this problem according to the forums, which I just don't believe. It's a shame the camshafts were so bad, one can only suspect a bit of bad maintenance history. Love the new old stock panels. I looked into buying some for mine but just couldn't afford them. Parts are being discontinued for the E31's left right and centre, fuel rail for one. And like you say, 4 companies all over the world have all taken my money then failed to supply and sent a refund. Each time it happens wastes loads of time. Anyway, let's hope she runs on all 12 when it's all back together.
@@stevesbmwbarn5706 Yes, you'd think so, but there's also a lot of bad advice out there, it's a matter of separating the wheat from the chaff I'm afraid. I'm currently on the last experiment with the fuel rail, if this fails then I don't know what else to do. If you're interested, and there's no treason why you really should be, I have posted threads on the Bimmerforums 8 series forum on the subject.
Wow Steve competing with Sreten's V12 rebuild, brave man 😂 hopefully you get the same 462k views he has 😂 Great to see you back, bet this one took a while to film! I'm saving this one for a nice cup of coffee after lunch 👌
Fascinating video Steve. I just put together a frankenmotor v8 for my e30 using m62 bottom end and m60 top end . Your video popped up in my feed and i really enjoyed watching it. All the best
Great video. It looks like you just got there in time. Does't bode well for someone trying what you are at in 10 years time. They would be really stuck. I've a 944 that I need to refurb. You give others like me encouragement.
Hey Steve, thank you so much for your effort making this video. I'm currently rebuilding my M73 (750i from 1999). And I also did the honing like you do in the video, have also used the same laping compound. BUT: my cylinder walls do NOT turn out as dull as they should be / like they were before from factory. I still can see the cross hatching clearly. This should not be the case. I did some investigation and found out that its important to meassure the surface roughness of the cylinder walls afterwards etching. In case it is too thin (too less etching) the walls would be too soft so the pistons will literally scuff them up and completely destroy the block. I will do another round of laping but I'm concerned about the the real roughness of the walls.. Have you meassured your walls ?
Didn't think bearings would be so hard to find, yea it's 30 years old but I imagined some other engine must've been using the same size but glad it worked out. I guess I better stock some for the rebuilds I'll be doing in 20-30 years lol
Hate to tell you this Steve but the blocks are alusil. After honing them they need to be acid etched to remove the aluminium and expose the silicon. If you leave it with exposed aluminium from honing the rings will snag and it will seize in time.
Been following for a while, my '91 850i has been sitting for a minute. Still runs fine. Just needs some suspension and a rotor. My car has 90k miles on it, so hopefully it's gonna last a while. Interior is trashed unfortunately. I have the inside gutted.
I’m no expert but my 750il (88,000 mi.) oil consumption is minimal, perhaps 1/2 qt per 4,000 miles using fully synthetic. The car was severely overheated and driven on a long drive after the fan exploded. Seems good as new…engine is very forgiving and tons of torque!
Appreciate your videos, but they sound like gamble to me. I’d have second machine shop check everything and do the work. Aluminum block and no steel liners not a good idea to me
He's back....well that's my evening sorted! You should post an update every couple of weeks Steve.....even if there isn't anything going on and your waiting for work to be done on the engine....find a little job around the car or interior job, or something to keep peoples interest and the channel growing
