In this final disassembly video I tackle on removing the front timing cover, rear main seal assembly, and crankshaft on Turbo BMW E36's original m50b25tu motor! Shoutout to Austin Nelson for the idea for holding the crankshaft in place with wood blocks! I hope that this video can help those diving into their own E36/E34 platforms. As always, lemme know how I can improve on my "how to" videos! Some exciting content to come :).

Hello, I have a timing question. Is there a timing concern regarding the two sprockets that goes onto the crankshaft? one for the oil pump and one for the timing chain. The two sprockets that goes on the crankshaft has a dowl indent so the sprocket can only go in one way. Do they need to be installed or fit in a specific way to not mess up the timing on top?

These videos are awesome! I'm never gonna take a motor apart, yet it's so interesting watching you do it. Plus your voice and the music is so relaxing haha. Keep up the good work man!

I wish I had the space time and all the tools, to take apart my m52 engine, I’m having misfires, I have changed ignition coil spark plugs and MAF sensor, somewhat stuck on what it is. I want to take the engine part due to the fact that my dad didn’t do any mechanical work, I want to give it a new life and also clean.

I couldn't have stumbled accross your videos at a better time. I'm getting ready to buy a spare S52 for my car to rebuild and eventually swap with my current motor and you've done as much take-apart as I'm looking to do. Thank you so much!

Great Job Pawinn. Got a tip for the build; Take a view at pazi88 's channel. He has got lot of tips at building boosted M50/52 's . Also big camshaft knowhow. Regards from holland.

Is it possible to remove the timing case off without messing up alignment? Meaning i can remove all the pulleys and pop it off with no issues while the car is on the ground? Thanks!
@Pawinning
@Pawinning 5 лет назад
Yes you should be able to. The timing case has alignment pins 👍

Good day. O teally enjoyed your videos. Thank u for sharing. What i would like to ask is when assembling the connnecting tods to the cranshaft. Which direction do they face. Please advise
@Pawinning

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I remember that I just googled a pic of the engine without an oil pan to get the rough idea of the orientation . Sorry for the late reply!

how does a m50b25nv engines cams timing chain come off with no vanos?
@Pawinning
@Pawinning 6 лет назад
Never done that personally, but in my opinion the mechanical system is simplified without a vanos unit. You’ll still need to lock camshaft but the sprockets holding the chain shouldn’t be more difficult to remove than the same system set up with a vanos assembly.

Had my chains marked/ ziptied until I took the cover off and I think the chain skipped a tooth. How much of a hassle is that going to be if any? I'll post a pic on Instagram for you to see if ya need
@Pawinning
@Pawinning 7 лет назад
+photojnt shouldn't be too much of a hassle, after taking every thing apart, bottom end timing stricly relys on the crank at TDC, then the rest is mainly lining the timing blocks up with the cams, and orienting the sprockets so that the arrows point in the correct directions (all which I'll be doing in the future)

so just like an outboard, the crank and flywheel are tapered, just being "smushed" together by the flywheel nut, or is it not tapered on these and that giant key takes the brunt of the torque?

this video series has been immeasurably valuable to me as I'm working on my forged internals build. I just got to the removal of the crankshaft on my teardown, and I couldn't figure out how to loosen that harmonic balancer nut so I came back. Thanks for the hard work man!
@norphes3865

Heyyy about that harmonic balancer, do you happen to have any idea if i have to swap it out if i make the stroker build on my m52 with m54b30 internals?

@@norphes3865 which m52? Tu or non tu?

@@deltacharlieecho4732 mine is EUDM m52b25 non tu. Is its stock balancer enough to absorb vibrations created by an m54b30 rotating assembly? Or should i swap it aswell?
@deltacharlieecho4732
@deltacharlieecho4732 2 года назад
@@norphes3865 the m52 non tu still has the crank sensor teeth on the outside. I believe all m54 cranks have their sensor teeth on the inside so you will need to use the m52 balancer.
@norphes3865
@norphes3865 2 года назад
@@deltacharlieecho4732 Ok understood. I still don't know much about the matter so i'll have to research if a harmonic balancer for smaller internals will be sufficient for the vibrations caused by a bigger crank etc... That was very helpful, thanks a lot stranger 👋

Hope you kept track of which main caps went where. If not, you are going to need a line bore.

@Pawinning

That depends, usually you only need to change the tensioners. But if the wear looks significant it's not a bad idea to replace them, especially if the engine has a ton of miles on it (175k+)

@Pawinning

Being mindful of the timing chain orientation just makes reassembly easier. Timing from scratch is not difficult, but takes some more tech experience to ensure everything is lined up TDC. Thank you! I’m glad you like the videos 😌

Pawinning Makes sense. Do the sprockets only go on the end of the cams in a certain way? I.E is there a pin or key? Thanks for the reply :-)
@Pawinning

all the sprockets have a specific orientation they must be installed and locked down too at TDC. I believe my buddy Quinn from M3nace (another channel) has a useful video that explains it further! I've yet to break down the process myself.
