BMW E36 Transmission trouble shooting 4L30E - A4S 310R

1998 BMW E36 328i automatic transmission ( A4S 270/310R) (GM 4L30E) problems. The transmission wouldn't switch to 4th gear OverDrive on the freeway and would slip when going into 3rd gear some times. The transmission gear light would come on sometimes. The transmission had 240,000 miles on it
Here are the steps I used to diagnose the problems.
First see how the transmission reacts in Manual Mode, if all the gears seem to work well you have either a fluid issue (change the ATF) or an electronic (solenoid) mechanical issue. If it doesn't work then there is most likely a clutch or deeper mechanical issue.
In my case the transmission pan had a LARGE amount of metallic particles, indicating something inside the transmission had worn out.

i have a the same problem in my e36 320 i took it to a repair shop to change the atf oil put it did not help the transmission have only 110,000 miles on it . if you suggest changing the transmission it well coast me around 600 dollar but i am more into swapping it with a manual transmission which well coast me around 800 dollar .

Should I jus swap to a five speed mines doing the same but the shop is charging 3k is that reasonable

Hello, my car shifts smooth from 1st to 3rd, however, it does not shift to 4th until I move stick to N and back to D, otherwise, it doesn;t automatically shift. It is running with new transmition oil. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks in advance -

my 97 528 i has the same transmission, it will only shift up to second gear and in manual mode it will change to third but not fourth gear. I've done some research, changed my two front wheel speed sensors but it still does the same. Some have mentioned the abs module could be the fault.Is there any truth to that ?

My 94 325i transmission only goes in reverse. And in neutral it keeps going backwards. I been driving it for a year but this happen two weeks ago.

Stosh Przychowicz 4L60E is GM's name for the transmission, A4S310R is BMW's name for it, but they are the same transmission. The 4L60E can be found in a number of cars like Isuzu Troopers, come acuras, and a few other cars. The parts should be exactly the same from what I understand, but certainly check with the supplier the kit you buy should denote which car its for. I thought about the Manual trans swap, but the output flanges are different which means a new driveshaft, or cutting the end off a manual driveshaft and putting it onto the automatic drive shaft.. Either way its a lot of work. I ended up picking up a newer trans from a junk yard. The rebuild of the old trans will come after I finish a few other projects.

I have this, but with 1st to 2nd, and the whole car jerks when it finally shifts to 2nd. Gonna try manual mode tomorrow

Ya at 240k miles I'd say it was the clutches as well. The bands looked fine, although there were some large chunks in their.. Basket maybe.. bearings? When I get a chance Ill do a teardown of the old trans.

So can I use any 4l60e rebuild kit on the A4S310R? Are the clutches, pistons, ETC the same as long as the model years are the same? I just lost 3rd in my 93 235i and am debating the auto-tragic manual swap. Its all going to come down to total price. So I'm lookin at new sun shell, clutches, seals, solenoids, band, and pistons since this thing has over 160k.

I didn't watch the whole video, however i saw that you were in the M (Manual) mode, when you activate that mode the car won't go into 4th gear when the transmission is in D. The owner manual also states this. Switching to Automatic or Sport should resolve this.

would this work for a 2000 328i? mine is doing the same things but it only goes into third sometimes. but not into fourth and 5th? any ideas? should i do the same?

I would try changing the ATF fluid first. Use Redline symthetic ATF if possible and throw in a little Lucas ATF Transmission Fix. If the condition still exists or doesn't get better I would drop the pans and see how much debris is in the pans. If there are chunks of metal most likely its time to think about a new or rebuilt transmission.

Hi I have 1999 bmw e46 318i with automatic transmission and 240,000 Kms on cluster I was driving back home from holiday with my family then we stopped at restaurant for lunch after back to car i put it in " D " but car not moved !!! I tried " R " was ok but no drive forward !!! also there is no any warning light on . I checked ATF level was good Any Advise please ? whats wrong with car

I 2 have a 93 and same funny stuff,not happy ,weather being icy here in the south caused my trans light come slammed my drive gear and it scared the hell out of me,car proceed too a wild skid and I recovered at 50 miles hour I was lucky on black ice not cool,but now I have no d just 3 and its slow in take off and a indicator light I too have a mis place indicator shifter,i thinking fluid change and fact it being too cold out side in freezing temps.

What is the difference between the 4L30E & the 4L60E transmission ?

The bell housings are different and I believe you can't remove the 4L60E bell housing, the computer and the programmed shift points are different, the gearing is different, the 4L60E is a stronger transmission, you might need a different torque converter.. The list goes on..

I have this transmission in my 318ti which works fine in normal Economy drive but in Sport mode it will not change up to 4th gear,just stays in 3rd.Any idea what is causing that?Thanks!

Sports mode as I recall only goes up to 3rd gear, it does this on my 2007 BMW, you have to shift it to the 4th gear, being putting it into drive once you hit third, or if you have the manual shift option (sports then a pull out to the left to shift gears manually if you have that option).

uhm, i see you had 240k Miles on this car. And i'm doing a little research , cause i'm planning on buying a bmw , but my price range sends me to these milage cars. Do they still hold up ? of is there a milage were parts start flying in and out the shop.

+Dhr Willemsen I got to 297k and the car was still running well, because of a new car I had to sell this one in the video. Basically every 100,000 you need to replace things like O2 sensors and maybe a water pump. The E36 is a pretty stable car. Easy to work on and isnt as complicated as the newer BMWs. Hope that helps.

Mines bein weird shifting from either park or neutral to drive or reverse in auto. Dips way down in rpm when I start accelerating

That has nothing to do with the transmission. I think its the flagitator, but also could be the muffler bearings. I have to check the blinker fluid too I think its too low.

kan cli is right the mas has a lot to do with the transmission. Do some research before you start giving people bad info.

Bad Brad The Mass Airflow Sensor has nothing to do with the trans, if the mas was dirty that's an engine problem not a gearshifting issue.
