Valve Cover Gasket Replacement on my 328i BMW E36. This vehilce has 136,000 miles on it and is now 21 years old. When these cars get this many miles and years on them maintenance like that valve cover gasket is a must.
My valve cover gasket really wasn't in very bad condition, in the video you can see that it doesn't crack or break up into pieces when removed from the valve cover.
A tip to remember is that after many years and miles these plastic valve covers are prone to warping to some degree. When installing the new gasket it may not seal tightly in some areas. This will at the very least cause an air leak and may throw a check engine light. The fix for that is to put high temp gasket maker along the whole valve cover gasket instead of just in the rear and vanos area.
Hope you enjoy this E36 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement video, if you did please like and check out my new BMW blog! bimmercraze.com/

A tip for those of you just seeing this, the engine harness above the back of the engine bay blocks the valve cover when you try to put it back on. It is notorious for making the gasket fall out, bend, and not seal correctly. Please loosen this part of the harness and pull it up out of the way, so you can lay the cover straight down onto the head.

This is very educating. I'm gonna try this on Sunday. Mine is leaking also from the other side of the vanos

I think leaks actually comes from the gasket groove, and not from the mating surface of the engine. You will know this when the old gasket is soaking in oil. So, the sealant really needs to go in the groove. But, it's a good job to clean the groove. A fully oiled groove will definitely leak.

Thanks a lot! Yes the cooling systems are probably the biggest Musts for these vehicles in terms of preventative maintenance.

i wish i had the space to do this myself. there was a noticeable smell of oil burning. took the car to my mechanic who has been working on the car for years. $1300 bucks to do this job.... but the car is in incredible shape so I am going to shell out the cash... 157k miles original owner

Awesome video, but guys the VERY FIRST STEP in this job is to disconnect your BATTERY FIRST any time you're disconnecting electrical connections to work on your car always disconnect your battery that way if you ground something out you will not damage or fry your electrical system

@@iiplaya they can be bad when the previous owners don’t take care of them. The Main issues are Oil leaks and Cooling system breaks, The cooling system breaking is what leaks to Head Gasket issues !

Is there any difference how you put spark plug seals? On valve cover or on engine?

I've seen these vehicles go well over the 300,000 mark, the problem is it's tough to get a good idea of how the previous owner maintained it.
