Although you will have some small cuts on your hands after repairing a window, it is well within the skill level of the average DIYer.
On this particular 1998 BMW 323I the window motor bushing had cracked severely and the regulator teeth had become misaligned with the motor. This could've been a result of the loosely fitted bolts on the regulator or the bushing itself.
To repair the window regulator problem, I removed the window regulator from the motor, changed out the bushing, and then re-tightened the bolts onto the regulator with loctite.
Overall, the job was very inexpensive, costing me a total of $2 for the window bushing. However, if one must replace the motor or regulator, it would be substantially more expensive.
