In this video, I do an electric fan conversion on my 1997 BMW E39 540i in order to get rid of the factory clutch fan that frequently needs replacing and causes a lot of damage if they explode.
This is the kit I used for the electric fan: www.ebay.com.a...

I'm sure this still worked, but you're severely limiting flow through the radiator when the car is in motion. The fan is only needed/useful when the car is idling. The rest of the time it is a blockage. When the car is moving, the airflow all comes from the motion of the car though the air. Ideally, you have a shroud like this with little flaps that can only open backwards to pull flat when the fan is on but blow open when the car is moving.

Love the idea with the alloy sheet, decided to go that route on my conversion after lots of fucking around with other options. That wiring gives me anxiety though, you should re-do it neatly!

Yeh the alloy sheet is good, makes it nice and rigid. I agree, everytime I open the bonnet it turns me off haahha. I am doing a thermostat mod soon so I might redo the wiring then :)

I mentioned in the video that I didn't wire it in so I'm not 100% sure. Sorry about that. The car was having other work done so they wired it in for me

nice video. i have done this for my 2 bmw e39 m54 and m62tu . both work well. one of them i have connected with additional temp snesor on lower hose with T. elect fan only run when temp is above 95. so no load on alternator and battery. but its good idea do so. thankss

Where do you take power from?

Nice and ingotmavideo bud. Searching for a 16 incher but I'm a little worried as then I would have to remove the AC fan wouldn't I? I liked that extra back up and keeping my engines life in the hands of a potentially Chinese fan and relay certainly gives me pause. How do you remove yours when bbn it comes time to service your car? Looks quite close. Too close in my eyes. Dif you hook up a scanner and see just how much lower temps are? Would be interesting to see actual numbers. Anyway, thanks for the update.

Hey Andrew, there is no need to remove the AC fan. The AC fan sits in front of the radiator whereas this fan sits behind the radiator. You don't ever have to remove it unless you had to change your radiator or something like that, it's very easy to remove anyway. No different to removing than the original shroud to be honest apart from the wiring, it's actually easier in fact because the clutch fan on these is really hard to get off before the shroud will come off. I have the coolant temp on my dash cluster, it didn't really lower the temp by heaps but it's just more reliable than the clutch fan that's known to seize and explode which damages parts everywhere, it's also quieter, less parasitic drag on the engine, etc. The clutch fan is very expensive to replace when it fails also. I hope that helps :)

Hi,can you do a video how is working that fan and do little accelerate to check the noise.Thx
@MichaelRoninTV
@MichaelRoninTV 5 месяцев назад
Hi Eldin :) The fan is still working great. The fan makes the same noise whether the car is idling or the engine is revving because it is not connected to the motor anymore. It is electric so it just makes the same noise the whole time. It is reasonably quiet. Much quieter than the standard clutch fan.

@@MichaelRoninTV is it all the time working like on second speed (fast)no full temperature on gauge and is it on stock thermostat(thx for answer)
@MichaelRoninTV
@MichaelRoninTV 5 месяцев назад
@@eldinskoko5605 it only comes on when the temperature reaches around 85c from memory. This one is just one speed. It was on stock thermostat at the time but I now have a different one in it

What is the electric fan you purchased brand and kit ?
@MichaelRoninTV
@MichaelRoninTV 4 года назад
It was this kit here: www.ebay.com.au/itm/164152610904 (Derale 16" fan) but I guess any fan around that size would fit/work.

I was wondering, does this add any noticable improvement in power?
@GDK-MEDIA
@GDK-MEDIA 2 года назад
Less reciprocating mass for the engine to turn around. Not sure if it actually gains any noticable power but however it is nice to have a electric fan instead of a mechanical one that is prone to blowing out at high revs.

Can you make this and sell it , I would legit buy 👍🏽

Haha I wish, it's just not feasible with the price of materials and the time spent doing it. If you're looking for a good ready made solution, you should look at Zionsville Autosport

Question. I installed mine and when it turns on it sounds like a fighter jet taking off lol 😂 does yours have that same issue ? Did you use a resistor to manage the fan speed ?
@MichaelRoninTV
@MichaelRoninTV 2 года назад
Hi Anthony :) I wouldn't say its super loud but it's not extremely quiet either. I'd say mine are no louder than a factory electric fan. I bought a Derale kit so I'm not sure about any resistors or anything like that. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

@@MichaelRoninTV i appreciate the response back man. Thank you. … I’m going to try and change up the fan size- i have the 16 in. Maybe the 14 will be a bit quieter. Idk. It’s funny because i drive up the stores and in neighborhoods and people jump and assume somethings about to blow or take off lol
@MichaelRoninTV

@@AnthonyMichael504 haha damn that sounds like it must be pretty loud then lol. Mine is 16in also. Perhaps the relay or part of the Derale wiring harness stops it from sounding like that, i'm not too sure. Does yours have a shroud?

I understand however I wanted it to turn on earlier if anything so this way it turns on when the hotside reaches the temperature.

I bought a $9 temperature unit at Home Depot, used for an electric water heater. It is adjustible. I put in right on the radiator fins with those T zip connectors from Napa. I wired it to a relay and works great. The difference between installing a sender on the top hose vs the bottom hose makes sense as you think about it. However, the fan comes on with a regular sender in both installations. The way you know is that the temperature doesn't come up with the car at idle. My best to you...

There was a reason why that I explained in the video, either way the fan comes with instructions so just follow those and you'll be fine
