I changed out the mechanical fan to an electric one years ago on my automatic 330i and it still runs great no issues. I even recently took a trip from New Mexico to Florida and all went well. Just in case anyone thinking of doing it. The electric fan is expensive but it's well worth it. It's so much easier to take things apart to work on the engine with the electric fan than with the mechnical. Used to take me like 30 mins to take the mechanical fan off, now I do it in 3 mins.

I just swapped out the fan clutch for an electric fan on my E46 320D Touring. Wow what a difference! The fan clutch must've been worn out or the fan unbalanced because it's so much smoother now, especially at idle. Now I have much easier access to the front of the engine and the EGR, plus I'm secure knowing my 90K miles fan clutch won't be exploding in my engine bay. Highly recommend this retrofit!

TIP NOT To Do - don't attempt to use both the pusher fan and the electric fan at the same time. I splice the wires and bridge a connector for the pusher fan while also connected to the electric fan. Both fans will NOT activate when engine is hot. Computer/sensor doesn't know what to do. Car gets over heat. ONLY use one fan.

Hey so should I use my stock computer & strip the oem fan out? I had the clutch fan break on me going electric wanted the two fans and have literally been on a mathematician dilemma for the past week about exactly what you said, So should I strip old fan out put new Mishimoto one in? And keep the same computer?
@cya3651
@cya3651 Год назад
@@josephe4667 The electric fan basically plugs into the same connector as the pusher fan or the auxiliary fan for the AC. I tried splitting the wires to operate both fan, (New electric fan and the AC fan/pusher fan) but when I did that both fan do not turn on so it results in overheating. There is no need for the auxiliary fan or pusher fan. just having the electric fan alone is enough. my car has not overheated in two years. Good luck

@@cya3651 awesome, I have my parts coming in 10 days so not excited to try and take my bumper off for the first time, The rest should be easy but I’m Lowk dreading that part lol, also- clutch fan broke at the connecting bolt ( where it screws ON to the water pump) should I replace the water pump? I hope it’s not damaged but I have no idea since the clutch fan is right there
@cya3651
@cya3651 Год назад
I would say if coolant is not leaking from the water pump then it’s still good. However if it has been couple of years I would say replace it since you are there already. As for the clutch fan as long as you can get to the nut to loosen it so you can take it off it should not be a problem. FYI..If you are not already getting parts from FCP Euro I would say start because ALL their parts are lifetime warranty. Good luck

I found myself in this exact situation today - did a manual swap, had an aftermarket behr radiator, and wanted to delete the ATP cooler. I watched this video and ordered the manual drain plug in the description and everything. Turns out the drain plug inner plunger and oring are too big to fit into the automatic behr radiator's hole. If you find yourself in this situation, just buy a radiator for a manual car and save yourself the trouble.

I skipped ahead to just the fan swap and he didnt mention where he got the electric fan. Where is it from? My manual 01 Z3 2.5i has an electric pusher fan and radiator clutch fan. I want to remove the clutch fan in order to try and free up some power and make it quieter. When cold the fan is so loud, i believe the clutch is going bad. Might as well swap it with an electric fan. Not to mention my electric pusher fan sometimes gets off balance.

Hi 50s Kid, have to say a big THANK YOU, for your videos they’re all awesome, and inspired me to diy on my top antifreeze hose which leaked after breaking. I did The Whole change and bled and refilled the antifreeze. It was all pretty smooth until I noticed that my fan doesn’t shut off! I had it changed several years ago from mechanical to electrical but recently, it keeps running even while the car is parked and it was draining my battery, so now the only way I can keep from over heating while in stop and go traffic, is I pull off the fuse for the fan, once I park, and reinsert it to drive do I need another fan?could this be something else that is common and can it be fixed? Ever heard of this ? Thanks again please keep posting the videos you’re helping so many people with your expertise. Good luck.

Huge question, so I have a 2005 325CI and I changed the fan clutch because the fan sounded like a jet engine, now I have a coolant leak and plan to change the expansion tank and bracket because that’s where the leak is coming from, although now the fan noise has come back but it’s not the fan clutch, when I accelerate a 3k rpm it’s super loud? What could be my issue any suggestions? Btw I love your videos and and self taught diy kind of guy as well, I know your experienced so that’s why I ask, I hope you can answer my question thanks man!

The front electric pusher fan, is for what I understand, mainly for the AC. As you can see from this picture it's completely marked on to be there anyways in manual car too, even it's with electric fan. If you don't have this and you use AC and car is not moving, I think the pressure on the system might exceed the decired limits only, but usually you don't have the max amount of AC refrigerant fluid there anyway, but I would not delete it myself. www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BD53-USA-07-2005-E46-BMW-330Ci&diagId=64_0920 The car is just as an example, took just some late E46. But nice video and I love these all manual swap videos, good job :) Very precise videos and great angles and clear. Also I love how you always show mistakes and happenings stuff too. It did save me with the E53 transfer with front shaft sealing, had also "great time" trying to get it right in rebuilt.

Manual E46 does not have a front pusher fan Just the electric at the back. They both use the same connector to power, so you cannot have both on. Removing is the right thing to do if you do this swap, as it will restrict otherwise. Have had an v. early 328 manual since new so have first hand exp, and never had any issues with AC. Having both Auto and manual e46's, the Electric fan is MUCH more convenient than the clutch fan and probably will put less stress on the water pump. Will also not explode like the mech fan is known to.

@@50sKid Hi, first.....thank you very much for your channel, there are many others and no offence to anyone, but yours just IS the best. 2nd, i have a manual '99 328i pre-facelift E46 and mine has only the viscus and the fan in front of the radiator. I read some of the comments which say that y the fan you used was off of a manual E46......does that mean that i take the one in front of the radiator and move it to the back to delete the viscus or is there another fan.....sorry, just want to be petfectly sure before i mess up. 3rd, where have you gone? I am not seeing any new video's... Believe it or not, i enjoy watching even the videos that has no bearing on me 'cause i find it entertaing...your method if delivery......so i'm quite sad to see that i have gone through almost all and no more are coming. Anything we as fans can do to help keep the channel alive???? Anywhoo, hope you see this and that everything is still well with you. Your channel might seem like a small thing, but you have made a big difference in many people's lives.

the clutch fan can grenade and take out other things in the cooling system. It also makes working on the accessory system easier.

Hey 50s kid ! Can you help me out? I have a rough idle and loss of power on my 2001 330i. I'm getting system too lean codes in bank 1, and misfire codes with fuel cut off on every cylinder ! So far I've diagnosed that my MAF sensor is working properly, I used fuel trims to determine I do not have a vacuum leak, all my 02 sensors are working correctly (used multimeter), replaced camshaft positioning sensor because I figured it was giving wrong information that would throw off the fuel injectors, but that didn't help. My next idea was checking the fuel system, I replaced the fuel pump about 1000 miles ago, as well as the fuel filter, and replaced the fuel injectors about 300 miles ago, is there something else in the fuel system that I missed? I believe whatever I missed, had to be the culprit. What do you think? I'm going to be checking my fuel pressure pretty soon.. do you have any ideas as to what the problem might be? 😭

@animefreak3939 7 лет назад
Adam More oh I am having similar issues on my 330ci. Although I had fuel cut from 5 & 6 and figured it may be the coils. Changed them as well as replace the ccv system, throttle body and intake gaskets, new DISA, new vacuum lines, motor mounts, nearly complete coolant refresh with the exception of the radiator, headers cv axles and today transmission mounts. But I still have a fairly rough idle. I may try to replace the VANOS seals if not refresh it with a kit. Have you cleaned your IAC ?

does the issue start immediately or when the ECU goes into closed loop (1-2 minutes after starting the engine)? have you tried disconnecting the MAF sensor and running with it unplugged? does the issue persist?

@@paulnastoff2394 did you figure out what your issue was? Am finding myself in a similar predicament
@paulnastoff2394
@paulnastoff2394 2 года назад
@@digitaloski8702 Yes. First of all if you install electric fan you need to remove the auxiliary fan by dropping the bumper in the front so that you improve airflow and natural cooling to your radiator. Number two I had a small leak in the plastic overflow reservoir that is notorious for leaking I replaced it with a stainless Mishi Moto reservoir which should end that problem from ever occurring again. Third and probably the most important, you have to make sure you get all the air bubbles out of the coolant system and it is topped off properly by continuing to vent through the breather hole. To do this You should turn on your heat full blast while the ignition is in acc position and then jack the car up in the front so it is tilting back towards the engine slightly Jack car up about two or 3 inches then top off the bleeder several times. Probably best if you add coolant under vacuum but I did not have that set up and found the RU-vid video on properly topping off your coolant system which helped. She is maintaining good temp since then no leaks.

Hey dude I love the videos huge fan. I have a question for you, I have a 2004 bmw 330ci 6spd Manual convertible. My clutch fan is very loud and I would like to do a delete. I read everywhere online that a manual e46 shouldn’t have a clutch fan? Well mine does, also I have the fan in front of the rad I assume is for air conditioning, that fan never sound regardless if Ac is switched on or not. The air comes out the vents when I turn Ac on but the air does not get cold. What is my issue, how can I resolve it, and can I delete both fans (Ac fan, and clutch fan) to do a swap with an electric fan?
@50sKid
@50sKid 6 лет назад
You can do a swap as I did in this video, yes. If your manual fan is loud, it has failed and is stuck in the "on" mode (normally it just freewheels but doesn't spin at the same rate as the engine unless it gets really hot). If it goes too fast, the plastic fan blades can explode and take out your radiator. It's happened to me.
@Sitdownbruhh
@Sitdownbruhh 6 лет назад
50sKid okay, thank you for your reply. Also my air conditioning doesn’t run cold. I’m trying to diagnose my issue so I can resolve it. If the ac fan never runs regardless if ac is set on or off, does that suggest my fan could be the issue?
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 5 лет назад
@@Sitdownbruhh If your AC system is low on gas the AC compressor won't actually turn on. You can press the AC button and think it's running but it may not be. So the front fan won't run either. Possible reason.

hello jason. considering I would retain the auto trans and therefore the auto cooler and radiator mounts, instead of just by chance encountering a manual e 46 at the junkyard, would you know whether there is an oem or aftermarket electric fan available to replace the stock clutched puller and the secondary fan? I intend to model a replacement on your tutorial. andrew
@50sKid
@50sKid 6 лет назад
Yeah the manual E46's have the electric fans that fit in where the manual fan fits in on an auto. You can just grab one--I grabbed an extra one myself for a friend of mine. They were about $40.
@andreiput9492
@andreiput9492 6 лет назад
if I understand correctly, you remove the clutched fan, remove the aux fan assembly and the front of the radiator and replace with the "manual sourced electric fan" and plug it into the existing plug where the previous auto fan was located. and job done? I suppose the fan shroud then becomes redundant and can be left off the vehicle.

@@andreiput9492 You have prob worked this out by now as its 4 years ago - but the mechanical fan shroud is discarded along with the clutch fan - Manual fan comes with a shroud built in the just drops in.
