This video is very valuable, just saved us destroying any more than the door card more or less on a rare E39 model. I have some extra info to add... If you stop the video at 1:55 exactly, there is a narrow slot about 3x10 mm size in the just visible bright anodized section above the black plastic part. You momentarily put your finger on the slot at one point at about 1:53. If you put a thin screw driver into the slot, right into the back, and swing the driver tip upwards towards the top of the mechanisim, it unlocks it. No need to punch a hole into the bit you showed and press from the bottom. BTW, in the video you didn't explain that you had the lock upside down when doing the demo, once I realised the part with the slot is at the BOTTOM of the lock when fitted to the car it was easy to work out. Initially I was looking on the top behind the barrel switch.

Currently dealing with this same issue. 06 e53. Having all kinds of issues at once. The Drivers door carrier is broken... again. The central locking system stopped working, and the truck is locked. Once I regain access to the interior, I have already removed the door card (which is my guess why the central locking system isnt working) so I have access to the actuator, but not the attachment point. The actuators are similar but not the same. I'm hoping from watching your video that I can access that lever while it's still bolted in place. Wish me luck. If I can't make this work, I'm buying a new to me door and attacking this one with a grinder!
hi not sure about , the e53 lock but i assume it would be similar, as for accessing this lock in position my broken lock was done initially from inside the door as my door was locked & would not open.....anyway hope it helps & good luck with yours.
hi all you have to remove the door card first and you will destroy but the inner can be folded back once you remove the speaker and the unplug the wiring it will help to remove the window so you can access the door lock from the outside through the window this has to be done first then carry on with what Peter has demonstrated quiet well i believe .
Hello Peter, thanks for your comments.....but from my experience, the door card/trim can be removed in situ with the door shut without destroying, it, it is difficult but can be done & u will need someone to hold it out the way when accessing the lock as the is a tiny Phillips screw in the air vent that can not be accessed with the door shutbut as u described destroying the door card/trim is the easiest option....as for removing the window, i have never needed to remove the window & i do not access the lock from outside, i do everything from inside the door, so u will need a good tourch, also the door airbag will need disconnecting & removal so u will need to disconnect the battery before doing this, also take care not to damage the inner door barrier as it also acts as a weather shield & if damaged the car my get water in on the floor next time it rains....as i say the best access to the lock is from inside the door & if im trying to save the door card/trim I'll have some one hold it out the way whilst i work & i find the best method is to lay above both front seats with my legs out the passanger door.... anyway hope this helps make things clearer. Thanks for sharing the video, I had the same issue with my E38 except the lock would go only faulty on a hot weather - i.e. been sitting out under the sun for an extended period. It would work perfectly fine again once it has been cool down. What's the part number of the door lock?
Hi, glad it was a help to you, i never found any explanation on how to open the door when this happened to mine, I've since opened a few e39's with the same issue, as for the door lock part numbers I'm not sure ,but if you check "real OEM" I'm sure u will find out.
@@petergoz7453 how did you smash the plastic piece to gain access to the metal rod from the top? Did you use a long screwdriver to slide it through the window gap or would you have to physically take out the door card? My door is completely shut now, I can't open neither from inside or outside.
Hi, yes I removed the door card/trim & layed across the front seats to do it, door trim can be removed in situ with the door closed (I did this once & it did take some time ,most of the trims clips will break & put a small amount of damage on it, not that it was really noticable)every other time I've just cut the door trim off & got a new one, once inside the door remove the airbag(make sure u disconnect battery first)then u will see the part with the steel tab with a little rectangle window cut in it(i believe BMW has left this window to access the lever arm-watch the video carefully & compair the old lock to the new lock & u will see what I mean)but I've always found it difficult to access this way, so i just bend it out the way & then smash the plastic box section, (the plastic box section also has the window in it)break it up with a long flat blade screw driver & hammer ,make sure u have a really good torch for inside the door as it will really help... anyway hope this answers your question,if you need any more help just ask.

Hello, the door card needs to be removed & all the work is done from inside the door, I'm unfamiliar with the E36 lock, is it the same as E39? I'd buy a second hand lock from a breaker so u can compare it to the E39 lock in my video, if it's the same or similar then my method to open it will be the same.

Hello & thanks for the enquiry, the latch i show is in the lower part of the door lock, but bet for you is go to a parts breaker or auto store & get a new or second hand lock before u start as this will give u a better understanding of what u need to do & also once the door is open u don't want to shut it again or u will be in the same situation, so if u have the replacement lock ready once u get door open u can replace it.
Hello Yann ,one more thing i will let u know is the door trim is difficult to get off with the door closed ,but it is possible, but u will break all the plastic trim clips in doing so ,so buy some more as u will need them, also the is a little screw that is inside the door air vent/duct & it can't be removed so u will need to have someone help to hold the door trim out of the way whilst u access the lock, or as i have done a few times I just break it & take the trim off completely,but be aware if u do this it will damage the trim & u may need to buy a new door trim/card.....make sure u have a good tourch & just lay across your front seats for best access.....good luck hope it all works out for you.
@@petergoz7453 hi, o have a similar issue with a 2001 bmw 530i, both front doors don't open from inside or outside, even using the key. I cannot open it to gain access. So my question is do I remove the plastic holder on the inside driver side to be able to remove the trim panel? the windows in front don't open as well, I change the lock switch but still nothing, it only opens the back locks and I can turn off the alarm, I just wait until it stops. So is it the actuator that I need to change? Thank you for all your wisdom.
@@minervamercado7873 hello Minerva, it seems your car has some electrical problem s to be sorted out, but i guess must get the doors open to fix it. Have u tried a different switch to confirm it's not the switch giving you window problem? As for the door trim/card ,i have done this job a few times on different E39s the first time i removed the door trim,it is difficult & time consuming to do it this way, but it is possible....it would be easier to remove the pocket as it will give more room but i didn't it will cause some damage to the trim when doing this but it won't be noticed when u re-attach the pocket later, make sure u remove the thin woodgrain trim or it will also be damaged beyond repair & u will break most of the plastic trim clips that hold the trim to the door, but they are just cheap replaceable plastic clips....every other time I've done the job I've simply just cut the trim off with a knife & ripped it out, also be careful of the air bag & make sure u disconnect the battery(also don't reconnect battery unless airbag is plugged in or u will need a scan tool to clear the code) also i would suggest u get a new door lock before u start so u can watch my video with the lock in your hand to work out the spot u need to get to....any other problems let me know & I'll do my best to help.... good luck with your problem.... @@petergoz7453 hi Peter, when I use the button to open the doors, only the back doors pop up to the open position, however, the front door pop up when you pull on the door lever but the front doors do not open from inside or outside, I also believe the key fob battery is dead, I can open the door only inserting the key to the lock. As for the windows I'm pretty sure the switch also is bad because it only opens the front driver window, the back windows must be opened using the back window buttons. Forgive me for the long text but I really want to solve this problem. I've put many windows, switches, actuators but never worked on a bmw, also when I do open the back door to climb into the front seat, the alarm starts to ring and I can't turn it off, I have to wait until it shuts off on its own, can this all be related to the actual key fob?
