First off, the only real m-sport wasn’t released until final yr of production on the e39. Before that year they were just sport model. The sport model does however come with SOME m-tech parts but not all. And second, ALL sport models come with the mandatory 6 speed. The only way you can have a true m-sport model if it’s a 2003. Really feels like Nate should know this by now.

@@analogdriven you are correct, I was stating the 6 speeds were part of the sport pack up until 03 when it became the M- sport. The 540i Sport pre 03 had M badges on the shifter, wheels and steering wheel which leads some to think it’s a M-sport. Was the shadowline trim available throughout the entire run of e39? For some reason I feel like that wasn’t until halfway through when they added that. Did your steering wheel have the m badge?

The headlight squirters on the bumpers are part of the winter package, which was a separate and independent package from the sport package.

Just bought a 2002 530 executive (Aus). Test drove both sports and exec's and agree that the power is much the same in both but there is significant differences in the handling characteristics between the 2. The sports model holds the road better and has much less body roll as well as having more direct steering. The exec under steers but has a very plush ride. Really wanted a sports but they had all been thrashed so ended up with a well looked after exec.

in EU from 1999 E39 full M-package had following things: - M Aerodynamic package ( bumpers and sideskirts ) - 17" Alu - style 66 - fog lights - M - sport suspension II - Shadow line trims (black) for 6 cyl. engines or Highgloss Shadow line trims for 535 and 540 -M sport seats front - M steering wheel ( multifunction for 535 and 540 ) - Mattchrome interior trims - Skytrim anthrazit black - Alu foot support and M entry trims on floor In September 2001 is the M-package with the "Edition Sport" package replaced which consist of full M-package from early years.

My 2001 540i M sport has the upgraded front air dam, very similiar to the M5 but with a T- Piece splitter in the air intake section, secondly an M sport has a 3.15 final drive ratio differential, and let me tell you it makes a big difference to how well the car accelerates both from a standing start and at cruising speeds. This was done to optimise the engine rpm torque curve and to allow the car to be close to the torque band of the motor in normal driving conditions. The steptronic sports mode makes for quicker higher rpm shifts in what I can assume is the std auto transmission supplied. Add to that as has been mentioned sports seats and headrests, side skirts and rear bumper options, again similar to M5 but with only one single dual port exaust outlet on the left hand rear of the car. There are also M sport door trims and sills fitted, and as mentioned the steering wheel is similar again the the E39 M5 version as far as I can tell. Sway bars are upgraded, the ride hight is lower, and the overall ride quality is substantial stiffer and has very little body roll even though the car is by no means a light weight. I have driven several versions of this car and the M5 E39 handling is as close to the M-sport if not exactly the same, if there is a difference it is hard to define in simple terms. Other factors to look for that denote an original M sport are the window surrounds are done out in black and not chrome as in the stock and sports models, likewise the roof lining and side pillars are done in black alcantara. If I have left anything out I'm sure someone will fill in the gaps, but to put it plainly, there really is a great deal of difference between a factory M Sport car and a Sports optioned car, just go and drive one you will soon see the M sport is in it's own way quite a different package.

They must come different ways. I'm in Canada, Have a 2000 540i, 6 speed, factory build sheet shows m sport suspension and Dinan engine tune, larger intake manifold and throttle body. It's got the comfort heated seats, the 4 spoke heated steering wheel, window surrounds are black but no m sport badging. Black exterior with Tan leather interior, glass sunroof. It's a weird one. Full cat and resonator delete to a 3" (upgraded from the factory 2 1/2") to a dual tip stainless 3" muffler. Front strut brace, Staggared 19"s 275/35 rear and 235/40 front. upgraded to halos/hid and euro tail lights. Coilovers and brake upgrade this summer.

Your 2001 was NOT a M-sport, those weren’t released until 2003. That was the last yr of the e39 and BMW had a surplus of M-tech parts from the M5 that they needed to get rid of. Anything before that was sold as “sport” period. It’s ridiculous how many “BMW enthusiasts” don’t know this very simple fact. I know this is a fact because I worked for BMW for 17 yrs from 1995 to 2012.

The 03' I just bought has the M package special to that last E39 model year which included 18" chrome M 5 spoke parallel wheels, a sport suspension (much tighter) the M steering wheel, the M styling including that M bumper you mentioned, also a Black headliner.

I have a 2001 525 sport Australian delivered, it has black leather sports seats and steering wheel, black window trims and roof lining, silver interior trims instead of wood. Also has the M front and rear bumpers and boot lip. It has the staggered 17" m wheels. Don't know about the suspension, but it does seem to sit lower. So it appears this car has all the m options but it's just a lowly 525? Seems they made them in any combination you wanted.

You can't tell the difference between 230hp & 184hp not to mention huge torque differences? You are not much of a car guy bud, sorry. I owned the 528iM 5spd car, and I could tell a big difference in the 530iM auto. There was 32hp difference in the 2.

The window trim & side moldings are different as well on the e39 with the sports package.

peterdaniel66 Weird because ALL sport models have black shadow line trim. Look it up. The side trim has nothing to do with sport model, it’s the yr the car was made that determines the color of the side trim.

Not necessarily. For example all 540i models with the 6 speed transmission are "sport" package cars but black window trim was optional. In the case of my '01 the black trim is option 760 "Individual High-gloss Satin Chrome".

i think i have a 2003 e39 530i msport... it has the sport rims sport seats sport steering wheel and sport suspension. thee only thing it lacks is the sport bumpers. and manual transmission..

You appear to lack the knowledge about some pretty well-known things about e39's which I don't fault you for, but I sure as hell wouldn't have made a video about this topic without knowing these things. Especially glaring is the fact that you appear to have no idea about the special 2003 540 M-sports that did come with the m5 aero package among other things. You could sum this video up by saying "sport package" DOES NOT EQUAL "M-Sport". Up until those special 2003 models, there was no such thing as an e39 with M-sport package. It was stock or sport. Yes, there were M badged steering wheels and other crap which over the years people have confused and associated with M-sport but that is incorrect. Only a few thousand 2003 540s and only 162 2003 540 wagons (I know because I own one) got the actual "M-sport" package and again, it was only for the 2003 model year.

I actually have a silver 03 540i with the 6 speed and m5 bumpers sitting here right now, but what you probably dont know is that the timing chain guides go on the m62tu and most shops wont touch them , so if you cannot swap the engine yourself you better find $7k to have it done, check out my other videos for the swaps and timing procedures, your can only has the m5 bumpers and seats , otherwise its the same as the car in the video, there is soo much more to these cars than a factory cosmetic package

This is true for US issue, however Europe and Australia had M sport options from Late 1999 through to the last models produced in 2003 for which you are refering to, and not to many made it to the US.

@@NathansBMWWorkshop so, First off; No offense to anyone. Everyone is entitled to free speech & an opinion. That being said, Nathan has been the MAN in my book as I just would not have been able to afford my simple, slow, heavy 02' 525i. Fortunately, for someone who knew nothing (as in didin't know a 3 series from a 7, or even liter designation in series numbers class. I WISH I were joking!) NOW, My confusion/question: As far as in the U.S.A.; Is there a 2002 525i vs a 525i sport ?(I know it pertains to other E-39's but this thread has taken a few confusing turns for me, So I'm just trying to keep it limited to what affects me, the 1 model of BMW I not only own, but drive & service, as well as have a fairly decent understanding of) Also, anyone who has a rare model or a "real M", good for you! If you are/can afford it. Can put that type of power to the ground & maintain control, as well as do your own maintenance, take care of it & appreciate + respect the car, good for you ! As most of us know, it doesen't matter how much you read how many video's you watch etc. You can't buy skill! Certainly not overnight. You will pay dues, we all did. My e-39 is my little happy place. When I want performance, I hop on one of my ZX series hyperbikes, 2 of which are putting over 200 horse to the ground (pretty sure my e-39 boat doesen't even have that?) Hi, i have a question... I am a car dealer and i just got a 2001 e39 525 M Sport on trade. The car has the M on the steering wheel, does not have the sport seats. It has a 5 speed manual transmission, also has the power folding M5 mirrors and seems to possibly have aftermarket bunpers on it. I used a BMW Vin decoder and it shows that the car has factory M sport suspension but it doesn’t say that it is a M sport model. Just says 525i . I have the car for sale online and im getting people telling me that there is no such thing as an 01 525 M-Sport. That whoever had the car before me, they managed to change the steering wheel (I believe its factory), the bumpers (which i believe), the power fold mirrors (which seem factory to me) . The car also has the chrome door trim and has a base model manual climate control, not digital. But the vin decoder from BMW says it has Factory M Sport Suspension S704 package and White directional indicator lights S785 package. In your opinion (which i value) , is this a real m-sport package?

Also the 02 and 03 M sport has the M3/M5 wheel.

The only 02 “M-sport” is in Canada. In the U.S. the first true “M-sport” is in 03. They had M5 parts overflow and to get rid of them they created the “M-sport” in the final yr of the e39.

not really depending on the model year production ect ect 2003 540i and up are the M-sport pkg and from 95 -02 just a sport pkgs M-steering wheel and sport seats / Suspension ... its just an upgrade that the dealer want to throw at you make you pay more

The only true American “M-Sport” is the 03 540i. The “M-sport” came with the full Mtech bumpers and trim because 03 was the last yr of the e39 and they had full stock of M5 parts so they created the “Msprt” option.

hey, great video! I owned E39 with standard suspension and without any other sporty extras - m packet etc... I liked the car with its pretty good handeling, but it was still really comfortable. I think about getting m packet with sport suspension on my next car. You said, that it is basically same in terms of handeling, but what about comfort? Especially on not so good roads? Thx for answer and sorry for bad english

Loving your vids they have so helped me out in getting my first two BMWs a 1997 528i 155k already loving the ease of work on it and a 2002 525i .. same the love of it although this week i got a ticket in it otw down to LA from Sac lol .. i have 3 more that i am planning to buy for parts and strip, along with thinking about making a Rally car out of one .. AWESOME vids awesone knowledge i hope these are making you money and etc. etc. but wow my first two BMWs and wow how easy to work on ... Now the question, i was told that after the e46 or 2003 area models it isnt worth buying to work on as they really need dealership tooling .. is this true .. from anyone ... thanks

Your comparing a car with standard suspension with a car that has the optional sport suspension. None of these have the M-Sport package. M-Sport is a lot of details on the exterior and interior, in addition to the suspension and wheels. Try to retrofit it, then you learn! You should update this or at the very least alter the title because now it is misleading..

I know my 00 540 sport does have a different final gear ratio and a high stall torque converter which does make it faster and also consumes more fuel.

i imported my 2001 E39 530i from japan and it has Style 66 17'' M wheels M5 aero kit alcantara sports seats with black headliner has harder suspension chrome trims and that car has only sport wheels and Steering wheel

Just the model for all i know, just to track of them iguess. Probably it stands for something atleast for bmw themselves but nothing that you as a customer have to be caring bout that. I have done some research and never found anything so, my guess its just to make it easier for customers.

E12 was the first real 5series so e39 would be mark 4 but it doesnt matter. Tho many manufacturers use "mark", the absolute majority use others like bmws e, f, g, and mercedes s, e, c classes. So u aren't wrong but as far as i am concerned americans use the mark system but europe and asia is using other as i mentioned before.

first of all a m-sport is all the way m-sport, both of them are not M-sport cars and the diffrents are big and the price is higher than the standard ones like on ur video. And there is a driving diffrents to like the m-sport got the aerodynamic package and m sport springs lowed. so again the cars u showing on the video are not m-sport cars!

Msport has a body kit, high stall torque converter, different suspension, different diff ratio, Msport seats, 3 spoke steering wheel and probably more ive forgotten about
