BMW E46 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

Video tutorial on how to replace your BMW E46 3.0 litre in line 6 cylinder engine's valve cover gasket. Process is fairly straight forward but does require a little bit of know-how and prep work and METICULOUS care in disassembly. When your valve cover gasket begins to show signs of "sweating" or leaks then its time to replace the gaskets. Even if your car has very low miles like mine does the age of the rubber seals gradually deteriorates to the point where you just need to put new parts in.

You did a good job on the video except like the other guys said its easier with the cabin filter housing removed, ive done this 100's of times on e46 e39 and e53's and i wont do it anymore without using sealer on the entire gasket, to many come back within a month leaking again, the plastic covers get warped over time and require sealer no matter what BMW says.

yes please do share as I'm interested in knowing too. I had no idea that they could warp especially being a composite material that is supposedly supposed to be better than good old fashioned metal. Damn you BMW and your quality issues!

Just wondering why you chose to not remove the microfiber cabin filter housing? Seems it opens up so much more room while doing this job. It only takes a few minutes to remove... Thanks for the video on this maintenance project.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 лет назад
I didn't remove it because my hands were small enough to reach into the backside of the engine. Admittedly at the time when I did the video I didn't know that cabin filter housing could come out but if I had to do it again I'd still do the way I did in the vid. Having tiny hands does make my life easy :)

@ Jag sixtyfive - glad you liked the video and found it informative. The goal of my videos is to teach and inform my audience the steps and processes needed to properly repair a car. Now that you know what you know perhaps you're better off to fix your own car and not take it a shop anymore :)

does anyone know the torque specification for the vcg. hand tight might allow for unequal pressure on the seal.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 лет назад
8-10 ft-lbs but trust me when I say that uneven pressure on the gasket will not likely cause any issues let alone any damage. If your hand tightening is reasonably consistent then chances are you'll be close anyways. I wouldn't give this type of answer say if you were doing an internal engine assembly. Precise torque is critical for those parts but not for a VCG.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 лет назад
@ Ron Green - I have a simple answer if you're not keen on cleaning the injectors by removing them from the vehicle. Use a few tanks of fuel and pour in a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner. On some vehicles where I have removed injectors for service it seems to do the trick to keep the combustion chamber and injectors clean. I have no way of proving it but I do see a difference on cars that have used it recently before I had to service them vs. cars that I know have never run any cleaner through. Read up on Chevron fuel system cleaner and you'll see others have similar comments.

Thanks for this video. You're right about the valve cover grommets (BMW part number 11121726537), they do tend to fall out so I would recommend taking them out before removing the valve cover. And at only around $1.00 each, it may be worth replacing them with fresh ones while you're at it.

Thanks for this. Pretty good tutorial. Tip: instead of squeezing the tools in the back by the 6th cyl you can remove the cabin air filter and you'll find 4 30-torx screws that hold its container, remove them and you got a lot more space to work with.

Kpro4 good tip. Fortunately for me I have small hands and I'm a contortionist! j/k. Great tip for those that struggle accessing the rearmost plugs on the M52/M54/N2 engines.

Dude, if you replace a gasket you need to inspect the mating surface. You can't do that with the interior filter assembly in place. Second, there is a little groove in between the cylinder head and the vanos manifold, you must apply a little sealant.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 5 лет назад
I was able to inspect the mating surfaces with a mirror and by feel and up until someone pointed out that I could remove the air filter assembly to gain better access. Had I known that before working on it that it would've saved me some time. Car still on the road today with zero issues (thankfully).

Awesome vid. Really helps us understand what's happening here. Our BMW E46 developed a leak about a month ago, took it to our local garage, who charged us £150 ($250) including diagnosis, to replace the valve cover gasket! Got it home, and it still leaks!! So pretty p***ed off. They have said bring it back to them, but this really helps give us some understanding, just in case they give us any BS, and try to charge us even more money! Thanks again.

Did u use torque wrench to tighten those 15nuts?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 лет назад
nope. Very light "hand tightening" is all that is needed. If you use a torque wrench on those nuts I GUARANTEE you'll break almost all of them. Unless you have an ultra precise torque wrench that was designed for tiny fasteners with extremely low torque values you're better of just hand tightening them.

YOU need Torque wrench to tight cover valve with 6ft Pound Torque Wrench maximum for gasket , That BMW proces
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 4 года назад
Um no you don't... I have some pretty high end torque wrenches that register tiny torque values and 6 ft lbs is barely finger tight. I take a common sense approach to fixing cars and 6 ft-lbs is not a value that is worth putting a torque wrench on. BMW process at the factory will do it this way b/c they have insanely expensive manufacturing process tools that can be accurate to values that low. The average (and even pro mechanic) likely doesn't possess such expensive gear for a tiny nut/bolt/screw.

I had an oil leak somewhere so i decided to start with my VCG. I changed my VCG 2 days ago, and since then, I've had been having a really bad small coming into the cabin.. It's really strong that it gets me dizzy after long driving. Also i noticed some white smoke coming from under the hood and through the vents. I can't find any visible leaks either.. Please help!
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 лет назад
starkiller Yikes! You probably have oil residue or a leak dripping onto a hot exhaust pipe that is causing smoke to form and enter the cabin. Is the VCG gasket completely try? Have you tried shampooing your engine bay to get rid of any oil residue that may be burning off on hot engine parts? Clean the engine bay and undercarriage well. Not only does it look better but a clean engine will help you pinpoint where something may be leaking.

My BMW 2001 325ci is the cap of oil on top has water but the oil does not have water it only happens in the winter time can somebody help me😄
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 лет назад
perfectly normal. Small chemistry lesson here: When you burn fuel what are the chemical byproducts? Ideally under perfect conditions it should be water and co2. When your engine is running especially in the winter you're creating condensation inside the motor as part of the byproducts of combustion. It is mostly water vapor and will burn off as the engine heats and the car is driven for enough time to dissipate the moisture. This is why a quality engine oil is so important because that water likely contains things like nitric acid, sulfuric acid and all sorts of nasties b/c of impure fuel or incomplete combustion suspended in the oil to protect the seals and metallic surfaces inside from corrosion. This is why driving short distances that don't allow the engine to fully warm up is creates more emissions and why it isn't goof for your engine (not enough time to vaporize and burn off the moisture). Winter is worse b/c the outside temperature is cold and the surfaces where the water vapor contact will condense. Summer time it is still there it is just that you don't see it. Hope that explanation helps.

so no torque wrench needed? if so, what foot poundage?... also other videos swear by the sealant on the curved areas and 1 seam along the edge... not needed??
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 10 лет назад
no sealant necessary. The gaskets are well made enough such that I have yet to experience an issue. I'd like to point out that BMW even from the factory doesn't use any sealant on the gaskets although there isn't any harm in using them if you're really paranoid. Ft-lbs for the bolts? Don't bother with a torque wrench you'll strip the bolts b/c most consumer grade torque wrenches won't accurately measure out what 9 ft lbs torque would be. Hand tight is sufficient.

Since we are able to see the timing chain, what should we be looking for when inspecting it?
@piercedasian

+Tool0GT92 aside from weird looking wear (it would be obvious) not a heck of a lot. If a motor was running fine before taking it apart I suspect that there won't be too much stuff to be concerned about. Perhaps keep an eye out for engine sludge which could indicate something's wrong with the oil change interval?

based on what you've described and the engine oil itself doesn't look "milky or chocolate milk looking" then you're fine. It is all part of normal combustion. Just make sure you avoid doing a lot of short trips that don't allow the engine to fully warm up. If you have no choice to let your car warm up to full operating temperature (idling doesn't count) then simply increase your oil change intervals so that you're removing the dissolved acids and moisture out of the oil.

how long it takes really depends on your mechanical abilities. +Erik Calleros not likely however, you should consider pulling the spark plug coils and the plugs just to make sure that they're not soaking in oil because of an oil seal failure. This happens on certain cars and certainly a possibility on your BMW IF the seals have failed and oil got in where it shouldn't be.

lol, it isn't that I like using the term "as such". Probably a verbal reflex of mine when I'm trying to explain something ad-hoc when I'm authoring my own videos. I've been working on stopping myself from making overly verbose vids and using silly words "as such". Good luck on your fix :)

I just completed this job on my daughters 2004 325Ci. This video was very helpful to prepare me to get the job done. My BMW mechanic suggests that when this job is done to replace the entire cover as well as the gasket and grommets. If the budget does not permit changing the cover, just keep in mind that removing the old gasket material may take a little bit of time. In your video, you did not change the grommets, which is important. The RSV is needed on the humps of the gasket for proper sealing. And lastly as you indicated, be careful on the torque of the bolts, snug them but not overtighten. Once again, your video was very helpful in getting me over the hump on this job.

Sealant is required around humps front and back. The fact that you did not remove the cabin filter and etc. proves your lack of experience with this motor. See Bavarian Auto for proper installation.

Tom Kay Tom I didn't remove the cabin filter b/c I didn't feel it was necessary to do so. I am fortunate enough to have tiny hands that can pretty much fit into places that would otherwise be impossible by others. As for the sealant I am well aware of sealant that would typically be required on the humps but as per the BMW parts department I was informed by them NOT to use the sealant - their reasoning was that it wasn't required so who am I to argue when they specifically pointed that out. So far no leaks.

+piercedasian never listen to people in parts department, they don't work on cars, they just sell parts
