BMW E60 M5 Oil Consumption Facts You NEED To Know - Fact 3
Today I explain the oil consumption concerns regarding the BMW E60 M5 which runs the S85 V10 motor which is also found in the E63 M6. I explain what is the typical oil consumption of these cars and explain the factors that have an impact on more or less oil usage. I talk about the break in period, how the car is driven, and the type of oil as being the main contributor to oil use. Some of the oil consumption issue is actually by design and I review the reason for this.

Great info again Mark. I have done some research on BMW`s brand oil. BMW put it out for tender a few years ago so the BMW had a brand oil then added the BMW Tax. Shell won the contract. So BMW 10W-60 oil is , I stand to be corrected = Shell Helix Ultra racing 10w-60 specs are ( which is important ) API SN/CF; ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4; Ferrari. I Believe that this oil is derived specifically for crankcases amongst all the other purposes.

Very informative. My e39 M5 with 130k on it used about 1.5 lt every 5000 Km. All my BMW , e90 M3 , E36 M3 , M135 , E92 SC M3 all used around 1 lt per 5000 e39 M5 used the most . 2 x e36 M3 3.2 Euro model 0 -1/2 a litre used the least both had about 150 K on the clock. My bro in law e90 323 uses close to a lt every 5000 as well with 180 K on the clock.

Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, there seems to be a trend with these cars and oil consumption. Many Higher performance cars tend to use oil, I know I have driven 911's for years, and those also used oil as well.

Hi thank you for this informative video. Could you perhaps make a video regarding your engine maintenance schedule. I own a S65 V8, my dealer added BMW 5w30 to my vehicle one reason being that in South Africa has warmer winter temperatures low 5 Celsius and high 25C. In summer low 10 Celsius and high 32C. These are average temperatures

You hit it right on the head with the break in. Luckily for me, my engine blew after buying my used M5 after about two weeks! BMW put a new S85 in for 32K dollars, under warranty! I was very careful about my break in on the new engine, changed oil frequently. Let it warm up, and I mean while driving! It burned oil during break in! Now oil consumption is minimal. Good video:)

@@Edison73100 I see. On Saturday I scored my E60 M5 42k miles from original owner (75 year old man). Detail records of service. Oil change every 5k miles. Brake fluid, coolant, transmission, differential, etc.etc. The car was pampered. I’m buying new throttle actuators to change them. I’ll upgrade the gears on the old ones and keep them for back up. I will never sale my E60 M5! This machine is simply awesome!

@exoticcarplayplace How often do you add a quart or do you just wait till the 3k miles to do an oil change? I really enjoy your vids, just got my E60 M5

Congrats on your purchase. I usually wind up adding somewhere in between an oil change and basically wait till the corrected level is around 0.1-0.3 and then add about 1/2 quart. so I do not go over but always sit in the correct volumes.

There’s no doubt bmw is king of performance, but a lot of their products are not properly designed, they are definitely great vehicles to own if you are willing to open up the hood, and find out how to repair everything, the idea of waiting on a 5k miles oil change on a Bimmer especially a M5 model,is definitely asking for more financial problems, these vehicles are over engineered, and the only way to get the best out them is proper maintenance care.

I was on the BMW factory website customizing my fantasy M5 and guess what? There's no option for the E60, matter of fact it doesn't exist within their selection of BMW series. Has BMW completely disregarded the M5 E60?
