E60 M5 S85 Rod Bearing Issues | Oil Issues What Weight and Brand
Do you want to know what type and weight of oil to use in the S85 engine from the BMW E63 M6 and E60 M5 ? I explain what type to use and how this affects the car when you change viscosities. Did you know that high oil pressure is not always good and I explain in this tutorial, why. Do you go with a thinner oil to help the bearings or do you use a heavier oil ? Find out here for the information. Also do not forget to visit my next video which explains which bearings to use if you find yourself replacing them.
Now go ahead and SMASH that SUBSCRIBE button and stay tuned for the next great video from Mark Holubetz at ExoticCar PlayPlace.

My independent recommends Mobil1 0W-40 for S65 and S85. Warming engine up to critical operating temperature before subjecting it to load is mandatory.

Exactly, it should not be treated like a Dodge Caravan that runs 20 thou rod bearing clearances. Cheers,

bmw has approved 5w40 from amsoil in these older m cars, the v10 and the e92 v8 as well. 10w60 is just to thick if you want it to last. even once the rod bearing clearance is addressed with something like a BE bearing kit the rod 2 rod clearance is tight as well causing oil exiting issues. id be suggesting the amsoil 5w40 that has just been approved. the cold start scuffing with 10w60 is a bigger problem than people think as well. this is just my opinion from what i have seen. love the channel buddy keep it up

5w40....NEVER recommended for the V10 by BMW. I have read the article you speak of, re read it...Only 10w60 for the V10

BMW added a recommendation for 5w30 in 2013 for the v10 cars. That's right , 1/2 the viscosity of 10w60.

Liqui Molly everyone in NY & Miami uses, what’s your take on it ?

Mark I love your passion!! 10w60 is wayyyyyyyyy toooooooo thick!! Bmw dealers are a joke especially when they tell me to change my oil at 15000 miles!! I have an e92 M3 and an e39 M5. I use 0W50 Mobil 1 racing in both it has a very high zinc content. That oil is an over kill in the e39 M5 because e39 M5 with the S62 is very different engine then the S65 S85, the S62 can take a 10w30 and it would be ok... I have no issues with either cars vanos with 0w50. Mobil 1 0w50 claims that it protects the engine up 500F degrees, I don’t know how true that is but even if it’s at 350f degrees it would still be a great oil.. Also it could be a placebo effect, and I could be wrong, I am not an expert but when I switched from 10w60 to 0w50 in my e92 m3, the S65 ran smoother, quieter and snapped in revs much faster then with the 10w60.. good bye rod bearing problems!

Would you ever run the Liquid Molly Pro-Line Engine Flush - Liqui Moly LM2037KT2 -as directed before changing your oil in the S85 or N57 BMW engines?

Just purchased an 2010 E64 and find your videos fascinating - thank you. Quick question - the car says there's too much oil. Scheduled for service in a week - approximately 12 miles from here (some freeway). Drive it or have it towed? Appreciate your comment!
@ECPP
@ECPP Год назад
if its it like 1.1 i it may be OK but generally I would not drive it with too much oil. You may be able to pull a little out of the filler cap if you have a pump .

install motorad 880090 thermostat and use redline 5w-50 and rod bearing issue is decreased by 50% too 75% failure

Mark, what do you think of the idea of a block heater if the car is going to be used in the cold weather? That way is sub zero temperatures the engine wouldn't be stone cold and might aid in less start up wear

The first oil for E39 M5 was 5W-30 then BMW changed to 10W-60 after rod bearing issue. The 5W-30 worked with VANOS. Confusing

Do not use 10w60. Specialy bmw brand oil (shell), Red line 5w30 in winter, and 5w40 in summer. Warm your fuckin car properly. And cool it of the same way. And change your oil every 5000 to 6000 KM max. And don't beat your damn car 24/7. My E60 now is 200,000km and no issues what so ever!

I have a Troy Jeup Built engine in my e60 m5... pushing 600 hp. He says 5W-50. Redline preferred, but Castrol Edge 5W-50 is ok too. I would not extend it over 3k miles.... 5km

Frequent oil changes are good and thinner weight is good for cold starts. Cheers.
@Zakov318
@Zakov318 5 лет назад
Why simply not to use 5W-50 race oil to resolve that issue? Vanos should be fine with this weight anyway.
@NickKautz

Still too thick , 40 would be the upper limit for these bearing clearances

I was waiting to see if you were going to talk on this....the biggest issue is warm up. Most other cars, people see a temperature gauge...it's water temp. Not the M5, there is no actual gauge for water, just a light. If one has the head up display on, you will see the tach, keep the rpm's in the yellow until the engine reaches the correct temp. This takes awhile on the V10, a few minutes. People do not warm up properly, take it to a high rpm, sooner or later the rod bearings will fail, not enough oil at 8,000 rpm. Why BMW didn't stress this fact I don't know. Most BMW mechanics will tell you, warm it up correctly, change oil at 5/6K miles, shouldn't have an issue. I use Red Line 10w60 with extra ZDDP

During warm up. I always wait until the rpm drops before pulling off.

5w30 or 0w40 would have eliminated all issues. But BMW was already in too deep when it became clear that this was an epidemic. For them to suddenly change the recommended oil to 0w40 for example, would have been the equivalent of admitting guilt and therefore being forced to take responsibility for related damages, which apparently they would rather people continue to spin bearings with the wrong oil than to come clean and provide the simple solution. And that would have been a judgement call from whoever was in charge at the time, reflective of their own personality.
