"wAiT TiLl YoU sPiN a BeArInG iN a YeAr LoSeR" .... Oh yeah? Haven't made a video about the car itself since last year, but I'm back! Here's to those that said the car would blow up in another year... I replaced them just for you, I mean, for peace of mind.
Here's the link to the kit I bought but there are others out there that may be on sale depending on the time of year and stuff. Just browse around. Any questions feel free to ask.

I work for BMW & just to be clear it's a worldwide process to recall cars with more than 5% rate of failure I know every failure & the stats (as the n47 timing chain note puma 3 for 2006 to march 2011) For the bearings it's less than 3% but ppl are surfing on the fears and keeping this thing alive because for business reasons Many garages like Gintani (or many others forgot the name) created the hashtag # savethes85 or 65 and "fixing" from 5 to 10 cars per day .. they will keep the fear as long as possible for the business Anyway 2 key words to not be one of the 3% people : warm-up in the morning, regular oil change this engine was designed from the v10 williams of juan pablo montoya FYI they start a F1 engine with 200° warm oil so the 20 yo kid driving dad's car end reving it cold doesnt know that it's not a regular honda this car is not for noobies

I sold my first one with 140K miles, but, before I did I dropped the pan, checked the bearings. Hardly a mark, I have my 2nd one now, checked the bearings right after purchase, flawless. In the Seattle area where I use to live, Strictly BMW, and Eastside Bavarian, 100% agree with the above comment. There is a strict way to warm the V10 correctly, do it right you will not have a problem. I can not believe for one minute, in a 5 year run on the 8,400rpm engine, if there was a problem with the bearings, BMW wouldn't have made better ones. The problem is the owner...neglect, oil changes, proper warm up on and on

Its not really hit or miss. This issue really comes down to drivers letting their oil come up to temp. I never rev past 3k until the oil is at measurable temp in my 2011 M3. Im st 100,000kms which is about 60k miles and I have no problems. I've launched, I've done track days, I've killed a couple sets of P Zeros. Not having fun in these cars is just dumb plan, rev her out go sideways! Just be smart. If you're gonna hit the kick down button from a cold start you will have this issue. Ther actual day that my extra extended warranty runs out, I will replace the rod bearings as a preventative measure. It's possible the previous owner was a douchebag that did burn outs from his driveway, you never know. It's a good idea to get this done and I feel like bmw should have corrected this before production or at least at LCI, but it really comes down to people that don't know gowe to take care of their cars. I would bet that most original bbn owners that had this issue are non enthusiasts. People that just dont know... people that buy M cars to be cool!

@@vmc8764 also the s65 im my m3 but I don't think it's a defect. I think BMW put too much faith in customers. Regular people are not very smart and even the smart ones, they're not all engineers or race car drivers or even enthusiasts. To expect a lay person to treat their car like a race car is asking way too much. For reference the S65 and S85 engines are derived from the F1 powerplant that BMW used in the William's car.

Thanks for the video I’ve now had my 2007 M6 E64 for about 3 weeks and have been doing plenty of research on her. I always allow for full warm up before getting on it. Hopefully since I only have 55k miles I can get close to 100k before making this preventative replacement to the rods. 🤞🏻 The two owners before me treated her well too otherwise I’ll be paying early for this.
@jjrimz99tandem_drifter
@jjrimz99tandem_drifter Год назад
When you say full warm up what do you mean? till temp is ideal till you start driving? I have heard once the car idles down, you can start driving under 3000 rpm until full warm up, then you can beat on it. The reasoning behind that is the quicker the car warms up, the less damage you do on the RB's as the car gets to full spec when warm, and driving under 3000 rpm will not cause as much damage. Whereas allowing the engine to sit and idle (Stays cold longer) for a longer period of time will cause the rod bearings to run without enough oil for longer than driving after idle stagnates.

Other than rod bearings, the most common things I hear between speaking with other owners are the throttle actuators and alternator. Mine have been fine though. And maintenance is just like any other car and depends on how much you drive, just more expensive due to things like more oil, more spark plugs, more expensive brakes, etc.

Wow low mileage! Honestly I wouldn’t even worry about it until 60k or if at all... if you’ve done oil analysis tests every oil change and they’ve came back clean then that would be pretty accurate at that point since your car has such low mileage, it really hasn’t had time for them to wear.

@@AlexGray I'd be careful there Alex. As you know this engine was derived out of the F1 Williams v10 bmw engine and its meant to be heated up first prior to revving. Over 126k not a single ticking noise. I do not let the oil pass the 3500 miles change intervals. It has worked for me, no vanos issues etc. Theses cars are ment to be driven , at least a Saturday or a Sunday early morning I take it to the highway to open it up, if you know what i mean. 10w60 saves the bearings, people driving the car on cold 10w60 is the problem lol. 10w30 is said to not coat the bearings good enough and promotes faster wear than properly prepared 10w60. ceratec is also good to use every oilchange as well. better to spend $25 every 3k miles than to not. highest ive heard from an original owner is 185k on factory bearings. - not a mechanic, i just spoke to many mechanics, and owners of s65/s85 as well as owned a supercharged e92 m3.
@piratecustom6029

That no copper is showing does not mean that the bearings can not be toast. BMW changed the "base" from copper to (much harder!) tin something around 2010-ish. So depending on the age of your car your bearings might not be of the "copper type".
@piratecustom6029
@piratecustom6029 5 лет назад
And the "best aftermarket" bearings to fit is supposed to be BE Bearings. I do belive they are of the "softer copper type with slightly increased clearance". Im not sure that coated bearings are the right way to go since some claim that clerances may be even less than the allready tight specification from the factory?
@AlexGray
@AlexGray 5 лет назад
They changed the bearing material in 2011 for the M3. All M5s had copper bearings.
@piratecustom6029
@piratecustom6029 5 лет назад
Are you 100% sure that if you bought/buy new bearing shells from BMW lets say around 2013 (or later) to the S85 then they will also be of the type with the softer copper base? I wouldn't bet on that, S65 and S85 are very similar in design so it is handy to assume that any "improvements" introduced in the S65 will most likely end up in the S85 too. After 115k the shells in your cay can actually be replaced once allready, unless you owned the car from new and know that that is not the case. Basically what I'm trying to say is that you can not rely on the fact that no copper is showing. Also if recall correctly BE Bearings are the only bearings available (nowdays) that retain the original design with softer copper (and increased clearance).

My 335i N54 has been verrry reliable. Zero issues in the year I’ve owned it. Sure, that’s a not a long time, but I’ve done almost 10k miles in it. When I first got the car, I was so used to shifting forward to go up a gear, that I threw it into first instead of third not once, but twice in the span of a week. Have never made the mistake since, and there are no metal pieces floating around my engine, thankfully. Yes, it was dumb. Obviously. But an honest mistake. Better my own car than someone else’s! But yes, I let it idle after starting it until the rpm has settled at 550rpm, then baby it until it’s completely warm. No exceptions. I think this has gone a long way to preserving it. I’m the 5th (or 6th) owner. Of a Florida 335i. That’s been incredibly reliable!

Thanks man, yeah people overhype the bearing job, if any shop charges more than $2500 then they just have a high mark up. I have not had any oil leaks, I don't think I've ever seen one leak oil but they will leak at the diff input shaft seal. I had to replace that. And then I randomly had a valve spring break which sucked but that is not very common. And before I bought the car, at around 80k the clutch and smg pump was replaced by the previous owner.

It’s oil dilution that cause the bearings and pump to go bad, open your oil cap after 3k miles and it smells like straight fuel.

@Peugot905 5 лет назад
@@floridaheat305 If you drive short distances putting around in the city, the engine will never warm up. All engines get fuel intrusion in the oil, HOWEVER an engine that doesn't warm up to operating temperature will not boil off the fuel in the oil. Since the engine takes forever to warm up it suffers this fate of fuel in the oil.

So many dumb asses think you can avoid the bearing issue by just changing oil and warming up, I was one of them. Just pulled my bearings at 50k miles and they look awful, scorched through the babbit. This problem happens because the bearings are too close to the rod journal, they were specced too thick which makes it impossible for an oil film to form between the crank journal and the rod bearing. No matter how warm it is, no matter what oil you use, you are not going to get a proper oil film to protect the bearing if you are running stock clearance. Some motors are looser than others and will live longer, but all of them will kill their bearings eventually.

Eric Gonzalez I mean it’s not the best car to have as a daily driver, the gearbox is kinda sluggish in start stop traffic and the fuel economy is extremly poor.... BUT that’s not why you buy a M6, I use it the weekends and for just driving pleasure it’s awesome! I’ve had it for 1,5 years now and I’ve had zero issues. The only thing I’ve paid for so far is fuel (lots of it), services and insurance. If you have an opportunity to buy one I think you should ✌🏼

Same concept applies to the N54 335i. Yes there's other surrounding problems but most are concerned with the wastegate rattle from the twin turbos. I've personally done the washer spacer method around the wastegates at 131k kms and there is absolutely no rattle and the turbos run strong at Stage 2+ full bolt on. Do I know how long they will last? no. If they leak, they leak and I replace them. I bought the car dirt cheap at the highest spec and can justify changing them. Now I don't rip on the car unless the oil is up to full operating temps so maybe that's why, but that's what everyone should be doing to prolong the life of their baby. Cheers.

Folks that claim the bearing issue is overhyped live in the land of fantasyland. Warm it up> Every-time? Get as life!. It takes over 15 minutes to get this engine even slightly warmed up, and to expect this every single time is ridiculous. . It is an easy job, just stop complaining and change out the bearings. And the bearings in this video ARE NOT GOOD! Look at the wear heals. I have pulled bearings out of multiple cars with more mile with no sign of wear.

@AlexGray
@AlexGray 5 лет назад
If the price is right I would consider it for sure. I'm at 120k and don't plan on selling anytime soon and would drive to California tomorrow if I had to. It just comes down to how the car was treated and maintained. I know mine was well maintained from the previous owner, came with all maintenance records. Also, those that have a long list of things that have been replaced seem to be the ones with ongoing issues. Those with only a handful of things replaced here and there seem to stay that way.

@AlexGray 5 лет назад
When you change the oil, check the filter for tiny little sparkly flakes of metal. Also I think the blackstone reports are accurate if you do many of them overtime and start as early as possible. My guess is that the people who said they weren’t accurate is because they only did one, then changed their bearings. At that point, the bearings could have already been worn well before the test and most of the metals were flushed out from all the previous oil changes.
