Used these instructions to remove my strut on X5 e70 Diesel, the fact that he did it without removing upper ball joint and stabilizer bar linkage was awesome! as most were saying couldn't be done with out. I just needed a buddy to push hub down and have some patience and it will come out, we left one nut on the top as it was easier. Thanks for posting this! truly helped.
@@JellyStyleMaster I thought that you would need a compressor as well to take it out, but not the case since the top hat keeps the whole strut under pressure. You do need the spring compressor when you take the spring out.
to add to this, mine springs were broken so where lower already. Unsure if that helped , it was a tight fit but with some patience and a buddy it did come out.
This comment (and video) saved my life. Was trying to get the shock out without removing the upper ball joint and it wasn't working. Started hammering at the ball joint and it wouldn't break free. Came here to youtube and found this video and gave it a shot. It works! Having someone help you or having a pry bar to push down on the hub gave you JUST enough space to wiggle the shock out of the anchor arm. TY. I'm also working on a 2011 35d.
Thanks for the video! Can you share which spring compressor use used? I just wonder if the one I used for my e46 would be strong enough to tackle the springs for X5. Thanks.
Is there a way to use the existing EDC, but replace the strut and strut mount? My strut is broken but there isn't a code for any EDC issue in the front (but there is a code for EDC in rear)
I don't think there is a way to separate the EDC unit from the strut. Sway bar also works in conjunction with the struts for EDC, could it be related to that?
@@E70MGarage I'm wondering because I see people selling EDC/VDC struts online without the hardware, claiming that you can just connect your existing EDC to it. ? And the price is much cheaper than buying it with the EDC. I have a 2009 X5, but a xdrive48i, not an M.
@@b24759 I haven't explored that side, if it's something that can be done then yeah by all means just replace the strut and use old EDC unit. I would go for KW V3 coil overs if I ever need to replace struts.
