BMW E92 SOS Failure & NO AUDIO: I need HELP!
*UPDATE - I FIXED THE PROBLEM BY BYPASSING THE MULF USING ebay.us/jdW1WP
Today has been a bit of a pain in the back side. After getting the SOS failure and no audio yesterday, this morning i was greeted with an SRS light. So i figured i need to get on top of these asap.
A few of you mentioned what could be the cause of the no audio issue and after a quick read online, it seemed like it should be relatively easy to diagnose the MOST system. But after 10 hours on it today, i can't work out what the issue is.

This may not be related at all but there was actually a recall on the E9X's. Something to do with a battery cable, I'm not sure exactly what problems it causes but worth a check if that hasn't been replaced by BMW yet. Battery issues in these cars cause all sorts of weird electrical faults and you did also mention the SRS fault. I hope that helps

Look at the MOST diagram tree and find how the loop goes. you will find a break somewhere but it wont be visible, best way is shine a laser into the optics you will find which optical line is broken

Mate, there is no need to take everything apart like you did, had you run ISTA for a diag it would have told you what ECU was down. Now I understand you bypassed all the possible ECU connected to MOST and the issue might be elsewhere, but without a proper and simple computer diag, you are just wasting a lot of time. I have a e92 325i which hasnt been running since May, Engine rebuilt and still low idle 400rpm then able to rev it to 4000rpm then straight after it shuts down... blocked cats... then decat the car and still getting 2C73, 2C9E and 2C9F... HELP!!!

@@ZeroTo60Tube Reading a fault code is 1 thing, If you had gone to through the MOSTSYS Analysis procedure it would show you a list of modules in the MOST ring and show which one is faulty by putting a * behind the modules name. You can call this diagnosis procedure up yourself from the repair section in ISTA or if you let it calculate a test plan it would have been in the test plan list ;) Since it is giving a SOS fault on the dash I know it's the TCU that's down. SOS function has nothing to do with the MOST system apart from that the TCU is connected in this loop for serving online services. The SOS function uses the K-CAN bus connected to the TCU for communication with the rest of the car. If the TCU goes down it does not communicate on K-CAN anymore and the KOMBI will set a fault for that. That's your SOS error. If the TCU is down it will also not pass through any info (thus light signals) on the MOST system and since it has a ring structure it breaks the ring that's why you have no sound. By logically thinking where these 2 symptoms cross each other I know it's the TCU without even having to hook up a laptop to diagnose it. I'm also a full time BMW electronics specialist, but unlike many others I don't do only retrofits, coding and some mild diagnostic work but I actually repair all sorts of modules, CCC's and other multimedia modules among them :) You can also contact me in case you would need some advice or my services. I also do remote diagnostics, flashes and coding going via our own server.

I have similar issues, I have no Satellite radio in my 335. So no fiber optic loop fix. No chimes when key is on. All radio settings will display no audio. I do get the SOS warning light. I’m needing help.

Try shining a torch down the cables and see if you can see it at the other end ?

I did that from ccc unit to the footwell. But for some reason didn’t do it from the rear of the car. I was hitting so many dead ends trying to work this out yesterday. I should have done this.

Sounds like you've covered most troubleshooting steps looking for this issue. Have you checked Newtis for the MOST bus layout? Might be worth a look. Just make sure when you are troubleshooting that you don't let the MOST bus go to sleep. I believe it will go to sleep after 10 minutes if the loop is broken. Opening a door or toggling the ignition will wake it back up.

It is definitely due to the cable between android and ccc unit. Take the Android out, disconnect the battery and reconnect it, same problem with me when I connected the plug on the back of my ccc unit to the Android cable

Right under the driver Side dash near your pedals there’s one wire that connects under there that sometimes come loose. That was my issue connect it back it’s right near where your CAS module is at. I don’t know what the wire does but after that all sound came back on

I had this same problem in my e90 and the issue turned out to be the sat box module. Also the loop runs in one direction from ccc to end point in passenger footwell.

Certainly no guru here and hope you find the issue. I've had blown amp fuse before which resulted in orange led flash, but using the loopback would confirm / isolate amp issue.

Hi, I have the same issue with my E90. I checked the fibre optics in the trunk and the red lights are working there. The only place I don’t see the red light is under the driver seat. (everything working but the radio)

Not sure if you found the problem yet, but this same thing happened to me after I had my car apart. The cause was the kick panel under the driver's side has a speaker network wire going to it.I had forgot to plug it in after I unhooked the steering shaft through there. Hope this helps! That just happened to me after replacing steering shaft.. A shop replaced it... If I remove the kick panel will I be able to see a loose disconnected wire?

It has come from a car with the same setup as mine. So it should work. I can see the logic 7 controls. Also the sos error is still there. So the most loop is still broken.

I have exactly the same problem. It doesn’t bother me too much cuz I don’t use the sound system. But I’m worried it might fail its annual inspection (MoT in the UK) with audio warning not working.

The FRM checks a couple of times every minute for a short in the system, it then stores each time it checks and if it gets to above 50 the FRM will shut the power down to that system. The only way to fix it from not getting power is to reset the counter in the FRM via NCSExpert. I’m not sure if this will help but I hope it does.

As far as I'm seeing either the amp isnt sending a return signal or the CCC unit needs to be coded for it to work.

This happened to me , I opened my Logic 7 amplifier and it had corrosion and it was wet so I replaced it and it worked , also check your top front lights/sunroof buttons with SOS assist on your headliner if you disconnect them they can trigger the SOS malfunction so maybe try disconnecting them and connect them back , good luck !

Have you checked the XM radio module -- I have read that is the one that is usually the problem.

Mine also had no sound was the amp in the boot ,it also took a bath same as one the guys below leaking tail light, I diagnosed it by downloading the amp pin outs , unplugging the amp and hooking up a old speaker to any two speaker wires +&- obviously, on the inlet side of the amp connector, and boom I've got sound,and bypassed it wire by wire , hadn't got time to wait on Amazon👍 ,hope this helps , by the way loved the can of whoop ass opened at the drag day awesome video , Cheers Steve

We’ll the logic 7 amp input is optical. So it’s a bit hard to test. Haha. Do you know what the flashing led status on the amp definitely mean?

Got you mine was a 2008 335i not optical , not sure about what the lights mean on it but you've stolen everything else off mates car so i guess he wont mind if you take the amp as well😁👍 start with the amp it's the most common ,and like all 335i's if it's a flashing light it's never good ,😏

@@ZeroTo60TubeNope. Strange because everything works except Bluetooth and phone. I replaced the TCU with another but no change. I have an Android head unit now (error was there before) so I have Bluetooth via that but still bugs me!!

I should add that I already tried a 2nd hand TCU and it didn't help, ordered another off ebay as it was super cheap. Does the TCU have a fuse somewhere that could be blown? replacing the 3 phone fuses didnt help.

I have an Android unit in my X5 and it has created some issues. Has CarPlay which is great, but it’s not perfect. Try reinstalling the previous display taking out the android harness. It maybe that android unit or harness is creating the error. As it does have a canbus filter in it. Just a thought.

My android has been faultless. But i did buy quite an expensive one. Had a few androids now and the cheaper ones have been a pain. This ended up being the mulf.... i didnt think my car had one. Vid will be out soon on how i found the bloody thing.

Well that is a conundrum, normally when the bluetooth module fails it causes the iDrive to stutter, my dead tv module however didn't cause any issues even though it was still plugged in... it feels more like a break in the fibre optics and i think you're on the right track there, you can shine a torch down one end and see if it lights up the other end, that's the easiest thing i can think of.

@@SamAbraham INPA runs better on older and slower computers, ISTA is far better though IMO, I like how it just opens and you what your problems areas are, it is very intuitive.

I just had this issue of sos malfunction, I have audio, Bluetooth and I drive all working apart from the door beep on lock and unlock. Mine was due to swapping out my cream headliner for a black headliner. The black headliner doesn’t have the sos button and instead has an airbag off button.

Hey, I seem to have the same issue. All my audio works except aux. it’s greyed out in the console and it says I have an sos malfunction. Do you know what i need to change? My 2008 328i doesn’t have a satellite module. All the chimes, cd, radio works as usual. Just no aux and sos malfunction. I didn’t change my headliner or anything

My CCC navigation unit makes like a insert disk like sound every 10 seconds. But I have sound from door seatbelt. 4 months ago I bought that bmw e90 Xtrons CCC navigation android unit like yours hooked everything up but no sound my phone was playing but without sound from the car. So I took the xtrons display out of the car and put the bad display in when it's Cold outside it comes on just logo nothing more.. Now November 2020 that sos is blinks near sunroof and the display blinks now I was told from a youtube channel could be a Optical loop bypass which I ordered so I may have someone tconnect to logic7 amp this week I hope it works. Needs some sound bad going on 8 months

Yeah mate same for me I have an 08 528I and my AUX/ Bluetooth and SAT is grey out on mines and not working. I replaced the SAT module and TCU module I have the fiber optic loop but I would like to use my Bluetooth and I paid for satellite for a year and if I don't use my satellite I just wasted money. So I'm like you I need help

Hey friend. You posted this a year ago, so I sincerely hope that you’ve been able to resolve the problem. I have a similar issue with a 2006 650i convertible. I’m going to give the fiber optic loop another go this evening, maybe tomorrow if I run out of motivation. If/when I figure it out I’ll let you know, but driving isn’t as enjoyable for me without music, so I hope that you got it figured out long ago. Bill

Mine was a mulf module, which i couldnt find on first inspection. put a bypass plug in the loop and all was good.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I didn’t have any luck with the loop either. Still in the process of tearing the car apart at 0320. Working after other people sucks out loud. What should take 20 minutes ends up taking three hours. First trying to figure out what they did and trying to fix it without breaking anything just to get back to what should have been step one. No pride in workmanship anymore-at least it’s extremely difficult to come by

Oh I see, by the way your channel deserves much more traffic than what you have. I saw your channel as an influence, I recently put full Bolton’s, upgraded twins on my e90 335i. The Chinese turbos were amazing till the third day they blew, i guess you win some and lose some. Keep up the channel honestly it’s amazing !!

I had *similar* issues with my e61 when my MULF died. Disconnected it and everything works, except bluetooth, obviously. Worth a try?

This has the tcu instead of mulf (I think). The telecommunications unit does the Bluetooth for the car.

Zero To 60 yes it was flashing just like yours. I determined it wasn’t sending the signal back to the Ccc unit and got a replacement amp and it worked instantly only issue was the beeping for the the doors and the seatbelts was unbearably Loud maybe that was compatibility issues as I believe the Harmon kardon amp was from an e60 535i. I read somewhere that water can get into the amps somehow in the position they are in and cause issues as well as if you have a subwoofer running off the cars harness it can put extra stress on the unit causing a failure.

Zero To 60 I believe the break in the loop is at the amp because is the first point or last unit before completing the loop I can’t remember which

I ended up having a mulf module which I couldn’t see as it was hiding under the tcu.

A0581 Optical Fiber Decoder Box For BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 Car Stereo Logic 7 OEM E Have you tried using this? If you have a Avin or xtrons head unit this is what I had to get to get sound.

The issue I have is the broken most loop. Which is what is causing both the sos and the sound problem.

Best thing i can recomend is scan with ista. Once you know which dievice is missing from the most bus, you can simply bypass it with a most bypass plug

Dang. Mine was the mulf2 and the footwell module. But my windows wasn’t going down, headlights stay on. And the sos. but yours sounds like it’s something else. Hmmmm did you check the fuses.

I have checked all the fuses that relate to the stereo. But it’s hard to find info on exactly which fuses do what. As far as I can every module is getting power. I think.

Is there a MULF unit under the TCU? If so it could be that one.

No, this doesn’t have a mulf. Well I better double check. But I did flip up my tcu to unplug it when I tried the other one. Couldn’t see anything under it.

I had a same problem lost all sound for a week i disconnected the ccc unit sent it to the USA to get fixed the received it there but was no fault with it they done a full bench test all good they shipped it back i pluged it in and it worked agian still has me confused i would just try unplugging it for awhile maybe might work for you. 🤞 And one more thing the kick panel under the glove box mine has a loop there and a rectangle steel thing that has a wire going to it i left that one of one time when i was putting my water meth in the glove box and i got the sos warning too not sure if that is your problem but woth checking aswell.... Yeah, I’d read a few people who basically shut everything down and when they reconnected it come good. I did try it, to no avail. Then I thought the working ccc would also sort me out but no. My footwell loop is still connected, but I can’t get any red light coming out of the bloody thing. No matter which module I jumper/bypass.

Thanks man really appreciate that. I didnt mention it in the vid, but i do have ista and inpa and the proper icom. Unfortunately it just shows "most loop break" no other information. But again really appreciate your help man. Will have to meet up sooner rather than later.

Everytime I’ve lost sound its never been my amp its always been my actual CCC unit I find at a junkyard and replace then code and prestooo Ive done this three or so times noww

I have a e92 325i which hasn't been running since May, Engine rebuilt and still low idle 400rpm then able to rev it to 4000rpm then straight after it shuts down... blocked cats... then decat the car and still getting 2C73, 2C9E and 2C9F... HELP!!!

Check if you have light coming out of the cic unit in the dash.

Have you tried the MULF2 module underneath the TCU?

I haven’t but I’m fairly sure this car doesn’t have the mulf. I better double check.

@@ZeroTo60Tube If you have a USB port in the centre console and you have a TCU then you should have a MULF. Those modules plus sat tuner are notorious for failing and causing no audio with a sos error. I hope it's a simple mulf failure in your car. Good luck chasing the issue!

@@GregoryOcol I have the bypass loop on my mulf2 module and my sound came back on, Along with a new amplifier because that was actually needed. So once I put the bypass on the mulf2 module my sounds come back on. I ordered a mulf2 module on eBay and same thing. I have to jump this one as well to get sound. Do I need to code this new mulf2 module? I’m at a standstill

Mulf module was faulty. I removed the mulf installed a bypass plug and coded aux in at the ccc unit. Intsead of mulf

Hey bro I really dont know I will look at the forums if I find something I'll send it to you. I also send this video to some people I know that can help. I would recode the car or what ever tune you download right before it happened uninstall it. Reinstall the old map and see what happens. Do you know anything about these codes I recent got 29F5, 29F4 29F4 (P0420) - Catalyst System Effeciency Below Threshold (Bank 1) 29F5 (P0430) - Catalyst System Effeciency Below Threshold (Bank 2) I cleared them and everything is working fine and the car is driving beautifully. Not sure what this was. Thanks

Seems like yours might be decat or o2 sensor related. Keep a close eye on it. You running stock down pipes?

@@ZeroTo60Tube bypass the amplifier and then check if the port is blinking in the passenger footwell, if it start blinking after bypassing the amp then you need new amplifier.

Try and swap to a different logic 7 amp. I had the same issue when my logic 7 amp was fried due to taking a bath in the boot. Actually happened twice; shame on me

Truthfully I don't recall. I have the Most bypass, which I used to disable/bypass the SOS errors while hunting for a replacement amp. I switched out the amp as in my situation it was quite obviously the amp (puddle of water in the boot)

BMW MOST bus and (Intelligent Battery sensor (IBS) is so over engineered. I love the "over engineering". But if you are going to over-engineer, then do it on everything. LOL like over-heating problem that cause CCC, TOP-HI amp, and other module in the trunk to fail. It's just too damn hot.. just make the cooling fan stay on.. instead of waiting until it is 100000 degrees. I guess it's not a BMW if it didn't leak oil either. That's why I love my BMW.
