I can't believe you passed a PT Cruiser of all things on the Ring. Those are getting rarer to see stateside, let alone on a race track in Germany. That made my day.
They aren't rare stateside, they're literally everywhere and the junkyards are FULL of them if they haven't been stripped for parts and crushed already.
@@JoeAchilles1 Looking forward to your insights. I hate the bucket seats in mine. It's too firm on long journeys. Should have went standard seats. And they're already getting dirty...eeeew
@@ndj4267 Torque converters are fine and have worked well at the track. They perform well in day to day driving and you dont have to worry about the bucking the dct gives at traffic speeds
Great insights. Hopefully you can get some Team Schirmer feedback on the under steer issue. It is an impressive car and difficult to ignore! Thanks for taking us for a lap!
Nice lap / review Misha. Unfortunately UK & Ireland don't get the manual car - but that's only because almost no-one bought the F80/F82 with a manual box.
Manual was sold it was the uk office that discourage the buyers, as the autobox wears more quickly and ask stupid amount of money to fix, there's a company called "everything m3" that does manual box conversion.
The manual M3 / M4 comp pack cars are rare and special. Pre 2018 cars are very light having the carbon fiber propshaft and no exhaust filters weighing in at 1560Kg The gearbox is fitted to all the manual cars - M2 Comp and M2CS and is really sweet, smooth shifting and the rev matching feature is nice to use.
This is my favourite review that I’ve seen of the new M4!! Amazing job Misha! Every other review seemed to talk about the front grilles for 80% of the video... you very were objective and provided great info, thanks
I am very thankful Misha for being honest about the opinion on any car. Very honest, very nice & know about the car much better after doing laps after laps!
While I'm not too fond of the looks on the new M3 and M4, it doesn't look too bad and honestly it's hard to beat something that has a straight six engine, RWD, and a 6-speed manual would love to drive one!
It's blowing my mind that the transition from on-the-road to on-the-track right at the start is so quick and smooth. It's as smooth as going from a surface street to a highway.
14:50 I believe the reason would be that the old F8X had unequal length downpipes which caused it to have this very raspy exhaust note which many people disliked. This new setup looks a lot more like an equal length setup than the old F8X!
Great video! Thanks for the detailed look, my geeky side really liked all the aero details on the M4, even just how they're directing air out of the radiators. Also appreciate the bet stakes. Pancakes FTW!
Thanks as always, this is my go to video as a G80 Xdrive Comp owner. I look forward to a 100% stock G80 Xdrive vid with your telemetry camera and your end of lap comments. Keep up the great work!
Great video, definitely on the heavy side though at 1679kg for a manual/ceramic/carbon buckets car. So capable though. Hopefully we will see more G80 content soon
@MishaCharoudin I saw the PT Cruiser and instantaneously remembered why I love watching your videos again nothing to do with the BMW haha jk kinda no just great though love these and I forgot how much I like them. What a life good for you and how hard you have worked to achieve these goals great job!
I can explain the strange exhaust path. It's to equalise the downpipe lengths before the exhausts merge. This is why the G80 sounds better than the F80, and why you can now buy "equal length midpipes" to make the F80 sing like it should.
5th to 3rd gotta love that shift... Automatic: faster, better mpg, safer, but not as fun. Since I don´t drive with a stop watch I rather drive a manual. Plus the utter joy of doing a good launch with a rwd manual is awesome.
Another great video Misha, love what you do and I’m probably not the only person who feels like you have helped them stay sane this last year! Haven’t been to the ring for 10 years but you have rekindled my urge and hopefully I will be driving from the U.K. in our Peugeot 107 shit box to do some laps 🤣
Great video Misha! When George put it on the lift and commented how much it looks like the F80 it's because it's basically just an evolution of that chassis (hence the change from F to G). With a good alignment and a better flowing/lighter exhaust (hello Milltek) it will be much better. The grill is still butt ugly but, like you guys said, at least it's functional. Overall, it seems way better than I was expecting. However, that's the rear drive manual. The portly AWD version is the car most will buy so I look forward to seeing a comparison once Tim or someone else lets you try it.
Im hoping the prices on these 2021 bmws in a few years will be way cheap because people didnt like the body style...fingers crossed i can get one for 25k by 2027
I bought a f82 competition and it depreciated almost 25k in 2 years Thank God for depreciation. Despite looks people love these cars and their selling hoping you find one.
That was a really great review! I have worked with BMW for over thirty five years, I have noticed that ever since the E-90 days or thereabouts BMW has been dialing in more understeer into the vehicles. Just look at the sway bar setup in most models, they have a large bar up front and practically a wire coat hanger in the back ha ha. They claim it’s for safety. The newer active sway bars are becoming more popular so they should be able to control the vehicle dynamics a bit better being able to control the sway bars.Hopefully they will have a mode or an adjustment so the driver could adjust the front and rear rates. But that would open up liability I suppose. Thank you for such a great review!
I'd always thought that the reason BMW tends to be modest about the power of M cars is more to do with the temperature than fuel quality. I live in Yorkshire in the UK and it's not very warm most of the time so the air is a lot more dense here than it would be say in UAE or Florida. All cars love cold air but turbocharged cars particularly appreciate it. Thanks for taking us along on the lap, Misha.
I actually really like the front end/ look of the new M3/M4s, idk maybe I'm just weird or something. I will say though, the aftermarket bumper which lowers the top of the grill slightly does make it look even better in my opinion.
The idea behind the different exhaust layout just after the downpipes is to get equal length exhaust for both banks (after each turbo). The reason the S55 has the distinctive sound is the unequal length exhaust tubing after each turbo. On the S58 they did the routing such that both sides get the same length. There is also aftermarket equal length exhaust for the F8x which changes the sound to a more «normal» straight six: store.activeautowerke.com/products/f8x-bmw-m3-m4-equal-length-mid-pipe
I will own one of these in the next few years. I just will. With a manual. And, to be honest, being a regular driver, I hope it’s a bit understeery the first times I go for a quick drive, and certainly when I take on the track for the first time(s)...
Extremely informative. U guys are amazing. Also the crossover in the downpipes could be for cylinder bank exhaust gas mixing, for tone or drone cancellation🤷🏻♂️
German norm says that the weight of the car has to be measured with 90% fuel in the tank, 68kg driver with 7kg luggage and all other fluids in the car to be filled to the highest allowed amount. That is the mass of the vehicle you'll find in the documents
A traffic light type system needs to be added before that exit , on track entrance so you no if you have to slow down or not. Just a red or green would do.
Loved the video. Misha, thank you for showing how the new M4 6MT drives on the Nürburgring at speed instead of a street drive and review (your feature review was good too). Very insightful and a great review of a car that still hasn't won me over with its new looks, but the driving experience seems to eclipse the gawdy truck kidney grill. I still can't part with $90K+ for a car that I wouldn't like to look back at every time I park it.
Yeah the distance to empty was interesting, she's a thirsty girl on track, also nice to see a proper manual in a sports car, looking good Misha you've lost the winter weight gain, just at the end is that the ring tractor in front of you? Rj in Oz
i believe the reason for the unusual exhaust setup in the middle is possibly due to the packaging prep for the upcoming AWD Gearbox/Transfer-case system, it will need the room for it
Like so much this video. Looking forward to see same style reviews with different cars. Like to hear your opinion on the chassis of the car, suspension, brakes and of course driving experience. You may start with m2 and cayman. Twice a month would be nice 😉
12:05 Yea those Pesky Unicorns really are bothersome and imaginative! I tell you "Somethings got to be done about it!". LOL. Great one gentlemen. Thank you for this quality video.
Went to a lot of trouble leveling those weighing stands! If you've gone that far, should have two flat metal plates between the tires and the load cells, tare'd out, with heavy oil or light grease between the plates. This nullifies side loads and binding. It's the method used when weighing light aircraft, too.
That must be the tamest instrument layout I have ever seen. The rev. counter takes the cake, as you really have to focus to see the revs, especially at the top end. And the biggest number in the layout is the gear indicator?!? Is BMW afraid that we forgot to change gear, or wtf is that about? Rant over, and thumbs up to Misha for another good video, and BMW for actually putting a manual in an M car once more :)
Its kinda weird to see a modern Bmw with a manual on a track haha, but i love it gearing seems great ! And who would've thought you'd hear so much about understeer when it comes to a RWD sports car..
In the UK less than 1% of F80 / F82 Competition cars are manual - What a shame! If you can find a low milage example buy it, a future modern classic gauranteed.
It'd be interesting to know where all that weight is. Chassis, suspension, engine, everything? Sounds like you'd get the same performance as a 1200kg car with 300bhp, but now with more expensive tyres, more brake wear, higher fuel consumption, but maybe better crash survivability? That thing's heavier than a 4wd Subaru! Maybe I'm wrong but where's the upside?
If it was understeering, it was likely because you put a more aggressive tire on the car than stock without changing the alignment. So the issue isn’t that the stock alignment is understeer-y, it’s that you didn’t change the alignment to match a new tire.
1:45 I am afraid that is not how physics work :D yes, you have more "tire friction" in heavier car with the same tires because friction force = μ*N where normal force N is direct proportional to car's weight BUT you need that grip to handle centrifugal force in turns and that force (F = m v² / r) is also directly proportional to cars weight so in reality heavier car is only going to make tires wear faster because greater force is being exerted on ground but grip stays the same (doesn't really because as the tire tread wears faster, the grip is also decreasing faster than on lighter car with the same tires)...Anyhow, I like that they still make manual option, thx for the review :)
also this is only my view on it based on my current high school physics knowledge, It might be more complex problem than the simple equation that I've described so feel free to argue :D
I thoroughly enjoyed your drive on the ring. May I make a suggestion: If you are going to narrate during your drive, which I highly encourage as you are very knowledgable, please, during the editing phase of your video, lower the engine sounds. It was a bit of a challenge to understand you which I wanted to hear more than the engine. Just soften the engine/background a bit as you are the star of the show detailing the car and drive. Thumbs up
I see you didn't have a choice but to wear this shirt in what is a rare, brand new, manual car. Haha jokes aside, thanks for reppin' the Shirt! I honestly didn't expect any less in terms of handling from the BMW. Say what you want about the looks, you have to praise BMW for releasing a Manual sports car in 2021.
Awesome video! Will be interesting to see if the understeer issue you mentioned is still apparent in the Competition model as that has slightly more aggressive alignment settings 🤔😋
Lake of brake cooling ducts was a common complaint on Bimmerpost from people that tracked their F8xs a lot, so it's nice that they added that. I don't really see enough to rush to get one if you have an F8x, though. I'm gonna wait for the LCI haha.
I'm just amazed that a PT cruiser is running let alone on the ring. Those things are absolute turds new yet there's still a dedicated community that revolves around them. More power to them haha
From what i gather from bmw technical explanations of the past cars understeer is set up for the safety of street applications and use of the vehicle , for track you need to correct that at time along with tire choose , however on this car the tires are top grade.🤔
