Yeah, it's a G26 with a battery. It's BMW's electric Band-Aid. The Taycan is on the brand new J1 chassis. The i4 is also 1/2 the price. So, apples to apples, guys. Is is as good as 50% of a Taycan? BTW, what does your rating really mean? Is a 6/10 on a bmw that same as a 6/10 on a Bentley? What car is your baseline 10/10? Or, is it like a dog show where the car is being rated against itself or its breed "carness?" Please clarify.
I own one and 3 things pop out on this test. First off, it’s not an electric M car, but should be compared to the M440i instead, which also makes the comparison to the Taycan even more off. Second, the cables. Don’t know if this is a UK thing, but my charge cable is easily stored to the left in the boot and the emergency charger fits fine in the area under the floor. Even with HK sound. Third, I love the steering wheel and I even got small hands!
100% with you on “chunky” steering wheels! So much nicer to use than spindly, narrow horrible ones where your fingers wrap around on themselves. And those that disagree are wrong anyway, proper drivers hold the wheel at 9 O’clock and 3 O’clock
@@stuartclaridge8537100% correct. The steering wheel is supposed to be held at 9 and 3. The big hint is in the button placement, but retarded motor journalists of course can't figure that out.
I am normally not an advocate for EV's but I just saw this car while driving today my god it looks gorgeous in grey! Glad BMW is moving away from the wacky EV Designs of the I3 and I8 I never understood why car makers felt the need to make EV'S look so ugly.
Well love mine, 3 months in and no issues, good range decent enough space for a family, comfortable and I love the looks, feels like an Ice BM. Real world as quick as my mates M3 comp, but agree will be destroyed on the track due to the compromise on weight.
I traded my M3CS for it and I love it. It would destroy the CS in a straight line, but yeah it's not really built for the track like the CS. EV is really cheap to run and convenient with the home charger, it's a beast.
Just a couple points... 1st, there is a compartment under the floor in the trunk for cables, so that criticism was pointless. And 2nd, it's not an M car, it's an M-lite, so that's why it doesn't feel quite as sharp as an M car. The full M version is on its way (BMW did a teaser video a few months ago).
Why if I may ask is this car comparable to a Porsche Taycan it’s around half the money and not even in the same ball park to a Porsche. In its own right it seemed a great car in the real world and compared to a Tesla Model 3 or polestar it’s stunning. Maybe drop M badging and just be a great EV can’t really be compared M powered Petrol surely.
I didn't get the Porsche comparison either! Like you say, it's much cheaper than the Taycan, which is built on a dedicated EV platform whereas the i4 is built on a converted ICE platform. Also, while the Porsche is more agile, the i4 is comfier and more practical. I mean, if you are going to compare two cars, at least mention the pros and cons of both!
Being a bit generous to the schnoz. I don't hate hate hate it but everytime I start feeling like I'm getting used to it, I ask myself why? It's bad, it's grotesque, there were substantially better solutions available. Even if it fades into the background more, it's not good. That said the G20 3/4 is pretty good otherwise. I think the lower powered model is the one to get, really.
I’m with Vicki on this, drove this, the GV60 Performance, the Polestar 2 Performance and M3 Performance and whilst the BMW immediately felt like my favourite drivers car once I sat in it, it failed to deliver the crisp steering and power delivery the Polestar and Tesla have. Which is really strange.
0:31 & 0:43 This is not the equivalent of the M3/M4, it’s the equivalent of the M430i. That’s why it’s only i4 M50 and not i4M. That’s also why the price is less than M3/M3. You have some wrong information here
4:40 why is the point of reference for a 4 door saloon the Porsche Taycan? That's a silly reference point, you guys need to review more EVs. This is clearly competing with the Model 3/Y Performance.
I think the sweet spot for this car is the eDrive 40 instead of the M variant. Some RU-vidrs have driven both and said that the handling is actually more balanced on the RWD 40.
Just ordered one on salary sacrifice, I take no notice of what these car journos say.. there are so many of them these days they just run out of things to say and just gabble inane shite
Seen quite a few of them driving around. If by looks alone that car is definitely on my short list. It looks great and has great presence on the road. I don't think this is the EV equivalent of the M4. If I am not mistaken they are developing the first M3 EV as we speak. I remember a clip with an EV M testcar doing a ridiculous 360.
This is not a 6/10 car. I own one and clearly a much better car than what these reviewers were saying. I owned an M3 before this and clearly the M3 is better at handling around the corners but for everything else it's almost there. For the price I would take this any day over a taycan. If you get a taycan for this price, please compare it otherwise your review is baseless. Other reviews did a better job. These guys didn't know where to hide the cables and didn't bother to even look at the floor of the boot.
I bought mine because it is like a conventional car and I don't like S.U.Vs. The only thing missing for me is a rear wash wiper and it is a pain cancelling the lane correction system before I drive it.
I drive a Tesla Model 3 Performance... and I'm interested in moving to a 'traditional car manufacturer' electric car... but where the hell do I go from here? I'm hoping the BMW i5M will be the one?
If an M4 was only marginally more expensive, I would not consider the i4. But in DK the the i4 M50 is less than half of an M4 due to car taxes. And a Taycan that can match 4 seconds to 100 is same as the M4.
What a ridiculous review!! "It's not a Taycan!" No, it's not, A Taycan is nearly twice the price! When reviewing the Electric VW, did anyone say, "Its not an i4 M50"??????
OK CAN SOME SOMEONE PLES BREAK IT WEEN IT COMES DOWN TO THAT NEW LONG DISPLAY FOR ME? LIKE IT THAT SOMETHING THAT ONLY COMES IN THE M PACKAGE? OR WHAT? PLES LMK THX BECUSE IM LOOKING FOR A NEW BMW
Dear Fifth Gear, do you see the irony of maintaining your name while only focusing on bland EV's? Whomever runs the show now are real geniuses. Get rid of Tiff and let's just feature toasters that are not at all viable for the long term of transportation. Bravo!
Everything they talk about in this video doesn’t make any sense, I don’t know how people watch this show. I feel like they just want to talk about the car and make a show with no point or idea what they want. And that lady comparing it to Tycan. 😂
You have to lose Jimmy. Vomming after a road test in a four seater…Really!.. Chris Evans is even laughing at this point. Guys, if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. 👍
Having recently watched this on TV, I'd be a happy rabbit if they didn't just slap it on here as was, lets have a bit of the stuff they couldn't put on TV please.
@@user-kv7vw6bk2b Fair enough but TV is restrictive, and Plato is a very funny lad as is VBH cept she's a lass (and easy on the eye to) not bothered about the other too, so they could use a lot of the out takes on the RU-vid platform and two separate audiences.
i think you guys need to recalibrate your expectations when driving an EV sports car. due to the very nature of needing more weight (batteries) to produce the power and range required, it's going to be heavier than a standard ICE vehicle, even of the same car. you can't compare handling of an EV to it's ICE variant, or even EV cars to ICE platforms as a whole, because they're apples and oranges. do more like car & driver does, which is compare them against their own kind.
All I remember from driving it is the feeling the scrub of the sidewalls through the steering even under just normal driving. It’s dynamically really bad honestly.
Tesla is a EV in corolla level/quailty, how is that possible after sit and drive both and you still want a Tesla? Guess that is how it made the 40% margin, cheap car try to be a premium rank and sell in a overflow price.
It's severely compromised in an attempt to get an all electric family car in to the market. Wait until they launch their properly-developed, full EV platform in about 18 months time. As this i4 will be worthless by then.
Poor review. One dimensional. Nothing about the charging, the battery, the range or about daily considerations like ride comfort, refinement etc. utterly pointless.
It's not the use of the M badge on this that bothers me. It's the fact the ///M badge is twice the size of the of the 50i part. Every other M version is uniform in size. M3, M4, M340i etc etc. But this has a giant M badge. Sorry, its a no from me.
