My guess is the weight transfer is more balanced on the M3 because you have the engine in the front and the suspension is probably better set up for performance driving. The M50 is a softer road car and the massive power and instant torque sends the weight all to the back with the heavy batteries in the middle lurching towards the rear.
@@jackcarline5183 I keep hearing this, but the 50kg makes almost zero difference to the Xdrive M3. Its 0-60 in 3secs and covers 1/4 mile in 11.4s . Its pretty damn rapid. though, the RWD is 'only' around half a second slower.

Something really important to note, and why the M3 might appear to be REALLY quick, is that the i4 m50 hard caps at 141mph. I had a press car from BMW and it keeps pulling hard to 141mph then abruptly stops at the limiter
Great comparison. What I'm taking away is that as someone who never really goes beyond three digits on the public roads, the i4 really does have more usable straight-line performance for any journey I'd make . But as someone who's had many a BMW six-cylinder engine in his life I'd still have more fun in the M3
If your at a set of light the petrol would win as shown above.. if it was the awd m3 then that would be a complete slaughtering for the electric car as thats another half a second quicker on the 1/4 straight line.
Got a BMW with a straight six right now and was interested in the i4, but the weight... 370 kg more than a Tesla M3P. That is a serious penalty for not having a dedicated EV platform.

exactly. doesn't matter one bit to me how quickly they accelerate in "the real world" any modern car is plenty quick enough, and draconian speed limits from the 1930s mean it's kinda a moot point. What matters is feedback, and engagement and feel and involvement. That's why I wish instead of 0-60 times and emissions which don't matter, manufacturers would chase low weight, and hydraulic steering, and manual gearboxes and handling. They do chase grip, but that's different. Every modern performance car has tires that are so wide you get understeer and can't kick the ass out. That's why a subaru brz is more engaging than a corvette, even though the corvette can pull something crazy like 1.2g.

I want a real engine, with engagement and responsiveness. EV's will never have that, and they're so unnecessary to begin with. @@dwade3202 I'm the UK at least on average we only use coal for about 2% of our energy so they really aren't. In fact about just over 70% of our energy comes from renewable or nuclear not fossil fuels therfore they are much cleaner that ice which is 100% fossil fuel
The most important thing you need to know about EVs is that they accelerate as fast as the manufacturer decides. The weight difference between a 200kW motor and a 400 kW motor is negligible, and everything else is decided by the software. A nerd with BO & acne presses a button to change performance in an EV - whilst with a petrol car engineers have to work hard to make a difference. So if a petrol M3 beats, matches, or loses to its electric stablemate, then that is entirely down to decisions made in a boardroom.
That is true but battery tech is still fairly primitive. Li batteries massively overheat if you pull too much current out of them so the current draw need to be limited. EV’s accelerate really quickly a ‘few’ times then their batteries overheat. It’s not the manufactures making them slow it’s the tech
You mention weight of the motor but that’s irrelevant, it’s the batteries that make them heavy. The electric car is still years away from being truly viable because they’ve been rolled out too early. They’re being charged with 60% fossil fuels (on a good day when the wind blows) and their lifespan is less than that of an ICE as once their battery dies at around 7 years or so depending on use it’ll write the entire car off.

Do yall just refuse to announce the battery percentage on the EVs before races, according to BMW the m50 should be faster 11.6 vs 11.9, so I'm assuming the m50 doesn't have a full battery, honestly why not just drive one car with the accelerator in half way?
Hands up if you think the M3 looks good nowadays. The i4 ain’t bad either, the 4 door coupe shape really helps, what BMW does best. the 8 Series Gran Coupe is probably my favourite-looking modern BMW of all time.

This for me shows why high performance EVs may be fast, but they are not sports cars yet. The i4 is carrying nearly half a ton more weight around and it shows. Even with more power, more torque and 4WD, the i4 is just outclassed.

Was watching a Shmee 150 or whatever he’s called last night ! He was talking about Volvo giving details on the offset of EVs vs fossil cars , something like a petrol car would have to travel 80k kilometers before it would match the environmental impact of building the electric vehicle in the first place !!! so certainly strange that the government are pushing this EVs cars , technically they’re doing more damage before they even driven or leave the dealers lot ?
Fossil fuels are burnt up and gone forever. Batteries can be recycled...Think harder. Think of the future. It IS strange that govt's are pushing EVs when most gov'ts have ties to big oil, so I don't get it but EVs are better for people imo. It's even stranger how people seem to be resisting EVs in the name of big oil ICE cars that pollute (which is a real problem unlike clim4t3 cr1sis), are noisy, greasy and overcomplicated.

I know they don't have the drama of ICE cars but it's bloody impressive some of these electric cars. You think in real world driving this M50 will certainly give the M3 a run for its money!! While being tax free (for now), and you can charge it for free while doing your shopping, crazy times!
The i4 is a lot cheaper to buy and on top of that consider that electricity is also cheaper than petrol , so you will be saving a lot for about the same performance. The real winner for me is the i4
Remember that the i4 M50 has 50 kW (68 horsepowers) less in comfort mode (non-sport boost modes) - equivalent to 544- 68 = 476 hp (-12,5%). It would have been interesting to see a race starting from 120 km/h to 200 km/h and/or from 150 km/h to 225 km/h. The M50 is superspeedy in the higher speed range and kills ie Tesla model 3 Performance. The M50 does 100-200 in 8,64s and the M3 Competition in 8,01s (Tesla Model 3P 10,1s). The higher the speed I guess the M50s extra weight plays less role and the massive torque and power will give an advantage even against the BMW M3. In sport boost mode of course ;-)

Where the i4 scores is at low speed instant pick up and overtaking ability. Can’t understand why some press journalists keep referring to this as an electric M car when it’s clearly an M-Light just like the M440i. The race wasn’t a surprise but the braking result definitely was, I can’t believe a 2.2T car could beat another weighing 400kg less and on better tyre by almost a car’s length.
But what's a better tyre? All these silly grippy things they put on sporty cars these days to get their lap times and (eventual) 0-60 times are pretty crap on roads. No heat no grip.
2 problems with this i4, 1 is too heavy, second it lacks second gear like the Taycan and loses quite alot of speed when they keep going...Perhaps on the next gen EV they will fix this, i hope batteries weight goes down cause they are way too heavy
Electric motors make so much torque that the need for gears is almost irrelevant. They are either on or off, so you’re essentially trying to reduce that fractional second when it spins up. It’s not like a gas engine which has a specific power band to compensate for. Batteries won’t get lighter, but the goal for car manufacturers is to put smaller batteries in cars and focus on faster charging instead of range.
Adding more gears to an EV is pretty silly. It makes more senso to add a motor, as it will weigh about the same and make the car faster in every aspect. Thats why the Lucid Air and Plaid crush the Taycan Turbo S.
