The new BMW iDrive 8.5 is a software update for the BMW iDrive 8 infotainment system. It was first announced in April 2023 and is scheduled to begin rolling out to select BMW models in the summer of 2023.
iDrive 8.5 includes a number of new features and improvements, including:
A new home screen with clearly arranged functions for easier access.
A new QuickSelect concept that eliminates submenus for a more streamlined user experience.
Improved voice control with natural language understanding.
Overall, iDrive 8.5 is a significant update to the BMW infotainment system. It includes a number of new features and improvements that make it easier to use and more connected.

The map being the default screen can be changed. I have mine set to media, just need to swipe the little notch on the other side and it gives you some other options

It depends, THe 4 serieces cannot be upgraded to 8.5 or 9. if you want that then you have to buy a new car.... seriously.

mine too! Been happening since I got the car in July 23 and no update has helped. Even BMW tried updating and didnt fix the problem.

Ok, I read that. It says “all M models will get it without the graphical interface”. I have a G80 to be manufactured in week 38. Does this mean I will get 8.5? I haven’t heard of any G8x vehicles coming with 8.5. And..sorry, I don’t know which processor will come with my car.

For an EV, iDrive9 with Android Auto is what I would want, as then you can run third party nav systems like A Better Route Planner that are designed from the ground up for EVs. unfortunately, my iX1 from may 2023 isn't eligible for the upgrade as it shipped with the older chipset. I consider that pretty disappointing-I think we can all be confident that iDive 8.5 will be the last ever OS release for the older systems. Within a couple of years then, my car HU will be relegated to being a dumb display for my iPhone, and BMW not getting any monthly subscription revenue from me for any remote service other than EV charging status. Which I really hope I won't be expected to pay £20-30 a month for

Could you help me out. I have a brand new 2024 x6 x40i and i am having trouble updating my idrive software from 8.0 to 8.5. Could you help me out by sending me an update file of 8.5 if possible that i could use a usb to update my infotainment. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks

Sorry. We don't work for BMW nor have access to things like that. Your best bet is the local dealership.

You could be oine of the lucky ones that don't have the hardward required to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.5 Who ever decided it was ok to release an upgrade to idrive and supply only certian models with the hardware necessary and without informing customers purchasing the same, as far as I'm concerned should be fired. Can you image paying 74k USd for a car and not having the same hardware that's available in the x1.
