In this video I disassemble and re-assemble/teardown the left hand multifunction switch from my 2014 K52 R1200RT. It looks to be the same switch used on other BMW models as well. My switch has BMW Part number 61318388633
I recently had to fix the "new" one that I bought to replace the one in this video. There is indeed protective laquer around each of the switches, but it is very tough stuff, I don't think it's easy to damage; however I would not recommend disassembling the switch just for fun. For me, I discovered the my left turn signal would not work. I discovered that if I pressed on the circuit board just right, I could cause it to function or not, a classic sign of a bad solder joint or pcb damage. To fix it I ended up scraping away some of the protective laquer, and soldering a wire to bypass the corroded conductor on the flexible circuit. This was not easy to do, and required a microscope to see the conductor damage! After I did the soldering, I painted on several coats of PCB conformal coating to re-seal the area where I had to remove the laquer. Works like a charm now.
I have the same problem right now on F800R 2011: right arrow works, left and mid button don't. From what I've seen I can't fix it by myself, I hope that BMW will not tax me too much
The starter switch on my K1600GTL has restricted movement. From what I understand, this is a common issue with the design. I really appreciate seeing how these assemblies can be serviced. Thank you
My indicator switch wont puts off…can get left and right indicators to work buy cannot cancel by pushing central to control…its as if no spring pushing back…any ideas? Thanks
in the bmw service manual there is written to not open the combination switch. "Damage to the conductors coated with protective sealing lacquer. Do not separate the top and bottom parts of the switch unit." Why do you think it's that? I can't understand what the protective sealing lacquer is.
Can you open it and back withtout removing it from the handle bar? I'm asking because I need to put on a replacement cruise control ON/OFF switch that falled off while driving and I can't just push it back in place
alright, tried it. Did not work. I managed to open a little bit the casing but I cannot have a decent acces to the underlying part of said button to push from under and lock the topside replacement button by pressing on it. It could be possible if BMW designed the button differently. It might be possible with a specially crafted tool (not to mess with the orange pads and fragile connecting "board" but I'm not going to try and craft it. So Either I need to take the controller of entirely from the handle bar (but I don't have a thin TORX 8 screwdriver on my hand) or, I might ask my BMW specialist if he can do it since I'm going to bring her in for the 40k maintainace in 8 days. Will update this comment with the BMW specialist answer on this, hoping he'll say he can do it.
Hi, the switches on mine became really loose, they work, but for example, the high beams switch won't stay locked because of the loose switch and the cruise control is really hard to operate, is this fixable ? Or do I have to get a new one ?
I would suggest that you may learn something by disassembling. Maybe a bug made a nest in there or something. Just take your time and find a good video about how to remove the multifunction controller without breaking it.
You mentioned “flaky” cruise control behavior. What was the issue? My RT cruise control is shutting down on the rare occasion. Thanks for the video, I think I will NOT disassemble mine based on the fact that there does not appear to be any user maintenance for cleaning contacts.
The slider moved without any kind of tactile click, so I was afraid that it would go on or off without my input. It also was not easy to increase the speed. Definitely no cleanable contacts. Later on my left turn signal stopped working, it turned out to be a crack in the flexible circuit trace. The fix was definitely not for the inexperienced.
