I think compared to a Audi TT RS it is too slow even with the engine power of that new and stronger Engine from the M4! You can see it on the speeds in the different parts of the hot lass! Don‘t geht me wrong guys, i ordered a M2, i love them, but it is really disapointing to see a M Competition driving like that.

@Zombie Head No DSG, single clutch automated manual. "Bigger brakes" in the CSL were the weak point of the car, it is a very documented problem. 12 horsepower more than standard car because of slight changes in heads/cams but mainly the new open carbon fibre airbox and about 100kg lighter, with first ever carbon fibre roof and thinner racier seats to save weight. Software only made shifts more smooth but the physical limits of a manual transmissions are nothing you can improve on. (until Lamborghini did in 2011 with their new Aventador). The BMW M235i manual which isnt an M car either, has made the same lap time with the CSL in Auto Sport magazine (sorry if wrong magazine, its easily findable in youtube). The M2 shouldve been a second faster, while the M2 Competition shouldve kicked it into the stratosphere. With the power alone and the brand new stiffer chassis paired with the dual clutch transmission, even though the tires seemed to be the problem, i would expect that with these tires (and smoother driving than the ARGRHHG in the video) the M2C would make a 7:49. It is a shame, i didn't even know it was this slow on a track, because i would never believe it. I never even considered it as a chance. Love the fact they made it though.
@Zombie Head i wouldnt go as far as to overtake the M4CS, BUT it could hold a candle with around but less than a second laptime. Still, you cannot compare apples and oranges. The CSL being a CSL didn't get anything major like a V12 with 600 horsepower. It was just BMW taking the chassis closer to its limit. What was CSL back then is standard today. Even the Z4M had a much stiffer chassis than the E46, imagine these new ones. Kinda like the new Toyota Supra has more chassis stiffness than the mighty Lexus LFA.
Wow, lot's of complaints with regards to the M2 understeering based on this video. I track my M2 regularly and have never experienced anything beyond mild understeer. If anything, I thought the M2 had a very neutral handling right out of the box (Michelin SPC2 on mine). At any rate, nothing that a basic alignment, which is really a requirement on any car hitting the track aggressively, can't fix.
The problem is that a lot of people watch videos and never experience the car first hand. They are also Quattro or all wheel drivers. All they know is straight line action. This car is perfect
I think this war for getting the best laptimes is a bit nonsense. Yes, we expect it to perform, but...how much fun do you have doing it? Are we pro drivers? For the 99% of us, i dont think so. For me these M cars are the hell fun as daily drivers, weekend/road trips and ocational track day cars. If you want something faster get a porsche 🤣 (Out of the box I mean)

It's part of automotive world and human life in general. Internet heroes have no idea how terribly set up the 1M was. Understeer to snap-oversteer, poor transitions... fun at slow speed but you absolutely have to mod suspension if you want to push it even a little.

Is your suspension stock? Do you enjoy understeer? If so, good for you, stop being defensive and enjoy your car. Honestly, people criticise my M2 all the time, I just smile, enjoy it and never respond. 1M owners on the other hand tend to be very thin skinned.
Lot of understeer for a competition series. I’ve seen multiple drivers say the same thing. Must be the added weight of the engine. Not too impressed with the track time.
Ich bin...... unterwältigt. Nur mal eine kleine Einleitung, bevor die Fanboys sofort mit den Mistgabeln auf mich losgehen: Das Fahrzeug trägt die Bezeichnung "Competition" (Wettbewerb) und stammt von der M GmbH. Das bedeutet, dass man bei dem Fahrzeug auf der Rennstrecke durchaus ein paar gute Rundenzeiten erwarten darf. Da sind wir uns alle einig, oder? So. Und nun zu der Performance des M2 Competition. Das Auto fährt eine 7 min 50 s auf der Nordschleife (gefahren von einem M GmbH-Testfahrer). Das Auto wiegt zwischen 1625 und 1650 kg und das bei dieser Größe! Ich frage mich, warum die Hersteller bei solchen Modellen nicht radikal Gewicht entfernen (unnötige Komfortfeatures raus und großflächigere Verwendung von Faserverbundwerkstoffen)? Schaut mal zum aktuellen Mazda MX-5! Er erfüllt die Sicherheitsanforderungen für den Crash, hat ebenfalls den Großteil des Elektronikkrams und wiegt dabei nur 1.188 kg bei 184 PS! Klar ist der Mazda von seinen Abmessungen her kleiner, aber wozu braucht man einen aufgeblasenen 2er, der von innen dennoch kaum Platz hat? Gerade bei den kleinvolumigen Modellen, sollte mehr Manufakturarbeit und Experimente mit leichten Anbauteilen sowie Verzicht von unnötigen Kabelsalat und Schrott-Gangets betrieben werden - da schmerzt es nicht so, wie in der Großserie. Aber nein, es wird immer mehr in Multimedia und Infotainment gesteckt. 9847604986576589 Verstellmöglichkeiten für jeden Mist. Wer nutzt das bitte und verstellt jeden Tag irgendwelche Einstellungen? Der M2C könnte viel mehr, darf aber nicht. Das muss einem bewusst sein, wenn man sich die Rundenzeiten und Tests anschaut, um da objektiv seine Meinung zu bilden. Der M2C darf nicht schneller sein als ein M4.
Warum bekommt der nicht die neuen 4S Reifen von Michelin? Die Super Sport Reifen sind veraltet und vergleichsweise langsam. Kein Wunder, dass die Rundenzeit so schlecht ist.
@Bill Gates Wahrscheinlich gab es sonst kaum Möglichkeiten um den M2 langsamer als den M4 zu machen. Auch der Z4 wäre auf 4S Reifen wahrscheinlich viel zu schnell. Ich bin gespannt wie der neue 3er rumfährt. Als M340i (oder so ähnlich) wird es den ja auch geben.
Die beiden Reifen liegen in der Trocken Performance ziemlich gleichauf. Mancher findet den PSS sogar besser. Erst Nässe hat der 4S den deutlichen Vorteil zum PSS.

BTW chassis on the M2 Comp is the same as the M2 'classic'. N55 is already a long, heavy engine. S55 is even heavier, and you see the result, the driver dealing with understeer where a non-comp M2 would have more front-end bite and allow you to work the rear to trim your line. Hype is a funny thing, it can make reviewers say the same chassis is not as good as the 718 and then say it is as good when the only difference is an engine. The Comp should have had a shorter, lighter 4 cyl, for the same reasons the e30 M3 had a 4 cyl instead of a 6. That's 100kg taken out of the front immediately and all the engine weight between the axles. AMG can get 400hp out of a 4 cyl, BMW could easily do so and the resulting car would be a legend.
I think BMW should care about weight saving. How come M2 is only 10kg lighter than M4? It is 1600~1650kg. That is 100~200kg heavier than Toyota Camry..The lap time of 7:50 for a company that has been making sports cars for centuries isn't really impressive to be honest.
All this speed stuff in getting crazy... the best car I have ever driven was a 1971 Mercedes 220 d.... slow as a turtle...but the feel and the handling was the best...
Ich bin den M2 Competition bereits gefahren und kann mich dem Tester nur anschließen: Super Funny. Macht echt richtig Laune mit dem Ding zu fahren. Schön heckagil. Die Zeit mit 7.52 ist auch absolut Ok mit Michelin PSS. Jaaaaa, der gute alte supergeile CSL ist 2003 bereits eine 7:50 gefahren...I know. Aber der M2 ist eine Gaudi-Maschine vor dem Herrn. Jeder der ihn besitzt kann sich glücklich schätzen....auch wenn andere unterm Strich schneller sind.

BMW has lost their touch car should have ran low 7:40s not 50 the Audi ttrs is quicker and it shouldn't be its awd vs rwd and basically the same HP but also tires could make a huge difference with lap times
Why didn't they upgrade at least the front tyres to M4 spec? 245 is too narrow on the front, especially on the M2C, wich is at least 80 kg more on the front with that engine and the big brakes and heavier wheels. Even on the lighter M2, the Michelin PSS in 245 have a really hard time on track. The Z4 got the wider tyres from the M4, and is lighter as the M2C. This is one of the reasons, why it is almost as fast, even if it's down on power.

I don't understand why the driver looks out the side windows when he goes through the sharper corners and also leans over, maybe he thinks he is on a bike or why he is "sawing" at the steering wheel all the time, I'm sure this car can post a quicker time.....

Ok die Reifen bauen eeeeecht stark ab das sieht man krass. Sollen das die Reifen sein die man vom Werk aus bekommt? Also wenn ein Rennstreckeneinsatz geplant ist würd ich dann doch die Reifen ändern. Aber Leute ich kann Euch versichern kein Auto hat so ne krasse Ring Abstimmung wie die M´s da könnt Ihr mal sicher sein. Bitte vergleicht das Auto auch nicht mit Autos von anderen Kategorien.
2003 ist der M3 CSL mit 50 PS weniger ohne Turbo aber mit ca. 220 kg weniger bereits eine 7:50 gefahren, also keine so starker Leistung , weil einfach zu schwer. 😕
The M3 CSL cost £58000 in 2003. That would be about £100k in today's money adjusted for inflation. The m2C costs around £50k. The M3 CSL weighs 1385kg. The M2C weighs 1600kg. That's 215kg difference. Which part do I have no idea about? The CSL has carbon roof, carbon seats and interior, track only tyres, carbon airbox, unique engine mapping, etc It is a very special car. I think the fact that you can go out and buy an M2C that's just as fast for half the money is a bargain. Not only that, you can drive the kids to school in comfort, cruise on the motorway, sit in traffic and listen to the radio in the M2C. One is focussed track car, the other is a daily driver.
15 years not 20. But I I know what you are saying and I agree that the M2C lap time isn't very impressive, but you need to remember it's on regular tyres and it's a full on road car. Fit cup tyres on the M2C and get a proper geometry setup and it would demolish a CSL. Then strip out 150kg and fit uprated dampers and brakes and a CSL wouldn't know which way it went. I think a lot of progress has been made in 15 years. Like I said earlier, relatively speaking, the M2C costs half as much and it's a better all rounder.

Christoph Teichmann Das stimmt. Habe mir die Runde nochmal angeschaut. Bis zum Karussell läuft es rund. Erst dann kommt die Unruhe ins Auto. Er verliert zwischen Karussell und der Brücke auf der Döttinger Höhe ca 2sec auf den Z4.
Eine ganz eigentümliche Kopfhaltung, in Rechtskurven dreht er den Kopf fast um 90 Grad nach rechts, als hätte er ei Problem mit dem Sichtfeld seiner Augen...!?
almost no mistakes. of course not going 110% with a car you have to give back in one piece. And tires + Power are limiting factors - software change with maybe downpipe equals 80-90 HP more.
tbh you dont invest in a car which is simply too heavy ... this car is just another money grab machine by the m division... buy an older bmw put some serious mods on it and go on a track . the m2 is just a show off car and maybe fun on the streets ... but not racetrac as you can see in the video
The 2017 Civic Type R lapped the Nordschleife in 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. Am I missing something; I thought the M2 was supposed to be faster than a front wheel drive Civic?
Stephan Büdel grösste manko des m2 ist einfach das gewicht! beim competition hätten die dort ansetzen müssen, aber dann wäre der kostenfaktor für bmw wieder zu hoch. man munkelt ja noch über nen m2cs... aber ne fehlende armlehne und ein bisschen alcantara ändert auch nichts daran, dass er für nen kompakten einfach viel zu schwer ist
Tieferer Schwerpunkt, etwas weniger Gewicht, bessere Reifen, deutlich breitere Spur. Da macht das Leistungsdefizit auf der NOS nicht mehr viel aus. Zumal der B58 im Z4 M40i auch gut nach oben streut und um die 360ps hat. Der Z4 wurde als Sportwagen entwickelt, der M2C ist nur ein normaler 2er auf Steroiden.

CSL is much lighter, and yes semi slick tires makes a massive difference In fact 25+ years technology - e36m3 with some hardcore weight reduction, R comp tires, proper suspension setup etc. can post a much much faster lap
Zombie Head I know the difference of csl m3 and normal m3 e46. Rotors are 345mm in csl in m2 are 40mm larger and in competition even bigger gab as an option, also big difference in power and torque, between csl and m2 competition. Ok is heavier. But in some videos stock 235 is faster in lap times than stock csl. It's strange that a m2 competition is slower in nordschleife. E46 m3 csl is epitome for me in ///M if it was a Manual option...
Maybe this shows the M2 lovers what the car really is. It's just a tad lighter than the M4; it has nothing going on against its bigger brother, no matter how desperately people try to claim it's better to drive. M2, i8, Z4 and the 8-series. All bad compromises that don't excel at anything.
20 years ago the CSL didn't existed ;) And for the record, when the CSL came out in 2003, it was equipped with Michelin PS Cup tires which make quite a difference.

An die ganzen InternetRambos hier! Was heult Ihr so rum?? Ob er 7:50..7:52 oder auch wenn er 8:00 brauchen würde. Seit Ihr alle verfickte Rennfahrer und fahrt jeden Tag oder jedes Wochenend auf der Rennstrecke?? Wohl kaum!! Und selbst wenn würdet Ihr 11 Minuten (wenn ihr gut wärt) brauchen. Das ist ein Tolles Auto und reicht alle mal für ein bisschen Adrenalin auf der Autobahn oder Landstrasse. Immer diese Stammtisch Zahlen (Pimmel) vergleiche! Dan ist der TT-RS schneller..und jetzt?? Bin ich schon gefahren, genauso wie den S 5 und RS 5. Das waren mit die Langweiligsten Autos ever die ich gefahren bin troz der Leistung, weil sie einfach null Emotion zeigen. Also kommt runter diese Autos werden zu 90 % niemals eine Rennstecke sehen und dafür sind sie schon ziemlich sportlich und geil!

Schade das die meisten die einen 1er M fahren nicht wirklich Ahnung vom Motorsport haben. Das sind halt die Profilierungsfahrer... Vor allem, vergisst mal die Rundenzeit, das Fahrwerk das Gewicht, achter mal drauf wie unglaublich krass der untersteuert. Eine + 2 Tonnen Luxus Limousine a la E 63 ist wesentlich präziser auf der Rennstrecke. Ist nicht die KOMBI version vom e 63 eine 7:45 gefahren?
Der Einstiegs'porn' ist echt sehr gut gemacht. Aber das Auto ... ich weiss ja nicht, aber harmonisch sieht anders aus. Entweder stimmte der Reifendruck nicht oder die Reifen waren an sich einfach fertig.
