BMW M240i - What It's REALLY Like To Drive

I went to LOOK at a manual estoril blue M240i in Chester in august and bought it there and then, absolutely amazing car, not bad on fuel if you drive it sensibly too so best of both worlds! You have good taste!

Gotta love the British weather!! You're right though, needs an exhaust... Looking forward to hearing how it sounds and how it changes the experience

Out of the box It lacks a bit of “character” because the electronically controlled steering, & because you got an automatic. It’s a cool car for sure. In my Opinion, coming from an E90 335i & having jumped into my M240i over a year ago, it’s definitely a bit of an adjustment for the steering aspect, but once properly tuned, & with the proper exhaust/ modifications.. This platform is an absolute animal. Trust me. I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough. You’ll grow to love this thing so very much. Just gotta be careful with those turns! And also, size up those rear tires!! A necessary mod!

Very informative video. I'm looking for a 4-seater sports car and this fits right into the budget as well as an Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce and some others. The Giulia should drive better but it's a 4-cyl and I'd really enjoy the sound of a 6-cyl engine more, but this video is just making me change my mind. I know an M Performance exhaust would solve the problem but I'm just not sure. Will you get one for yours?

I just bought a new 2021 M240IX drive 2 weeks ago. I really love that car. Traded in my 2015 VW GTI for it and have no regrets. The car is a joy to drive and a great mix of all the things that I like in a car. Mine's in the USA in Massachusetts. White with red leather interior.

I’m not surprised to hear your conclusion based on your past experience with the Z4 and the fact that you still have it. No matter what mods you make to your M240i, it will not be as engaging as your Z4. As John in another commentary stated, the Z4MR is so much more engaging. My Z4MR will be in hibernation soon for the winter. It should have been by now, however, we might be getting couple of balmy 10 to 12 degrees C days later this week, so I’ll be able to take it out again. Your M240i is fast no question there.

I REAKKY want this car! Same HP as old 2003 M3, but somewhere like 100 lb ft of torque. I loved my 6-sp M3.

Exactly what I felt when I test drove M240i. It is just effortlessly fast, I don't get this dynamic, and high tension of driving. It so good that makes driving boring, how ironic is it!

I felt that my 435i was very boring and undramatic aswell until i did a straight pipe intake and software and then the beast is released

They are a great daily for sure. Having driven spent time in my e46 330Ci but also an M140i, I totally agree with your comments. The turbo engine is so much more capable but seems to have lost a bit of character vs the reward you got from revving the M54/ other BMW (NA) engines. Also the new steering weight and feel is no way as good as the hydraulic racks and whilst that’s to be partly expected with an electric rack, other manufacturers like Porsche have managed to sort it out. Spot on review. Had an m140i 8 speed and like you, was blown away by how capable and fast it was but the slight lag and lack of drama and feel made me trade it in. I now drive a car half its value, a renaultsport megane 265 cup and although it has its shortcomings against a German brand like bmw, it is infinitely better as a drivers car. I urge you to try one, badge snobs may shy away but if you like driving and havn't driven one, you're missing out.

Re the adaptive suspension, it's worth noting that the regular suspension is close to the firmness of the adaptive in Sport mode, i.e. in Comfort you get a softer ride than the regular suspension. In my opinion the regular suspension is too firm to be comfortable on a long journey, but with adaptive you get the best of both worlds. Also I disagree about the turbo lag. It's nowhere near "a couple of seconds" even in Comfort, and in Sport or Sport Plus it's almost nothing.

Having have recently done a video with this car, I can attest to how awesome it is, but the only difference is that I did it in great weather😂

Your rear end looked a bit close to the house,It made me sweat a bit lol.The car sounds good from the outside m8.It looks great from the side profile.

A quick note on the disappointing sound. I can't verify it, but most British reviews I've seen of the M140 and M240 state that sound is hampered my UK emission requirements. Mine sounded good from factory, but I got the M performance muffler :/

Thanks Joel for an interesting video. I have a Z4MR that I have been driving for a few years. Whilst out in California I drove an M235i for the day and felt the same as you. Quick - yes. On paper a solid car - clearly. I was impressed for 15 minutes but, to my surprise, was bored after half an hour. Bored sounds strong, but I was. Is it a capable and fast car that makes for a great daily? Absolutely. Is it fun and will tingle your senses for years to come. I think not. And that is where the Z4, despite or perhaps because of its flaws, excels. I would still take the Z4MR over a Cayman or Boxter (not GT4/Spyder) for the same reasons. Many would disagree and with compelling arguments, but that is my opinion. None of this should take away from the M240i's strengths and I congratulate you for getting one.

I get what he means about the drama (or lack of). But that’s what the M2 is for! This is more of a daily driver, someone who enjoys a performance BMW with less effort. If he’s looking for drama and proper feeling, an M2 is the way. If anything I love the fact BMW gave us the option and a middle point between a normal 2 series and an M2.

Just bought myself a 2019 m240i what would you recommend for mods and ensuring the back end doesn't slip as much

Hi Joel, just got my M240i, same colours. BUT, I cannot get anywhere like the traction you get in yours - 2nd, floor it = spinning into a hedge! OK it is cold atm, but any ideas? What rubber were you running in this vid? I'm on MPSS. 6mm remaining! (on standard 245 18s) Thanks in advance.

Do you have run flats or Michelin pilot ?

I still haven't figured out if the M/S shift mode is manual or automatic. In my M240i, it's just a sporty automatic which is good for me because I hate manual.

As much as I know I'm about this car I'm still confused about 1 thing. The 2018 - 2019 LCI model seems to come with two different optional front bumpers. The one in this video is the more aggressive bumper which has a flat lower diffuser, and looks more aggressive, But many of them don't have that. Can anyone explain to me the difference?

Very nice review. Tire grip seems suspect. Your Zed seems to have better control and better traction in wet conditions. Your M240i seems to have a loose rear end. I'm not sure if it is tires or the 19" wheels.

Is this a PPF/OPF car? I know you've had the exhaust changed now but wanted to know if at this point had the filters

In your first video on the M240i you said the your car missed the Adaptive Suspension option (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Y4DJxRZTww.html, at 3:11), however here you say that sport and sport+ alter your dumping settings. Which one is the case? According to Joe Achilles the standard one should be somewhere in between the modes of the adaptive one, but definitely does not change with the modes.

I test drove a new one today. I found power wise it was very much like the 718 Boxster GTS, however that is where the similarities ended. The handling in sport plus unlike a Boxster, was lousy with a huge amount of understeer. The sports exhaust was barely noticeable except when downshifting even the 718 Boxster flat 4 sounds better. The cabin quality was plastic everywhere... cheap and accept for the leather seats didn't seem to fit with a car with that sticker price. It was just an excellent engine mated to a so so unremarkable body and cabin. A base Boxster is a much better drivers car.

I thought M240i was too fast for the road first but then changed my mind after test driving the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Seems that you are actually regretting the vibes of the car, maybe an M2 could be the solution in the future...
