There are faster performance cars, and more expensive performance cars, and certainly more overtly ridiculous performance cars - but every time I drive an M3, I fall madly in love with it. This car is my kryptonite. It renders me powerless.

What’s it actually like, living with a BMW M3 Competition? Frankly, it’s a paradox - it’s like owning an Extra 300L - the world’s top unlimited aerobatic aircraft, and only ever flying it straight and level. Takeoff, four right turns - not to exceed 20 degrees angle of bank - and land. Repeat. That’s driving to the office in your M3.
No loops, no snap rolls, no stall turns. Ever. Ultimately that’s probably a good thing. Because very few M3 owners would be capable of driving a car like this near the limit of its performance.
This car offers 216 W/kg, which is awesome in a straight line. 0-100 in 3.9 seconds #respect. And that’s not even what this car does best.
But 375kW and 650 Nm, from an awesome twin-turbo straight six… I mean, V8s are awesome, but give me a straight six any day - perfect balance and awesome rev characteristics beats that scavenging-inspired burble. Like, if you actually want to go fast. And BMW is the world champion of building the hottest straight sixes ever. So there’s that…
...But an M340i xDrive is $50,000 cheaper and more refined, and few people could drive an M3 quicker from A to B in the real world. Like I said, it’s a paradox. You can probably only make an M3 go as fast as you can make it go, and you probably can’t make it go appreciably faster than an M340i xDrive. And, tantalisingly, M xDrive is coming to this car in the last quarter of the year. So there’s that, if you want to split the tractive effort front to rear, in extremis.
Grip? Yeah. It’s a collaboration with Spiderman, basically. 20-inch wheels and 285/30s Michelin Pilot Sport 4s at the rear, and (just for kicks) 19s at the front with 275/35s. Rear brakes: bigger than most cars’ front brakes. To me, this car is like the supermodel you can’t have, and wouldn’t know what to do with, even if you could.
I’m pretty sure that ‘fun’ is entirely the wrong filtration for some sort of diligent assessment of a car of this nature.
That’s because these cars are terrifying, or at least intimidatory. If you step into the ring with this car and drop your guard, they will not hesitate to clock you. It’s an unforgiving environment in which to dance.
Therefore, I think the ownership proposition is either about bragging to the boys (most women don’t care - like, my wife and daughter both hate this car). Or it’s about bragging to yourself, about owning the ultimate engineering execution of a particular kind of car. This is certainly that.
It’s also as close to perfect as a practical supercar could ever be. Is it comfortable? Yeah. Kinda. But not in the context of a car designed to offer the ultimate in luxuriousness. It’s more comfortable than a car that performs like this has any right to be.
It’s comfortable enough to live with. But that’s definitely not why I would want one. I want it because it’s the best. But also because it will be completely indifferent to killing you if you turn off the electronic oversight and take it to the edge. It’s very hard to exist at the edge, with a car like this.

I love my BMW M140i for some of the same reasons. Admittedly it's nowhere near the M3 in terms of overall power and performance, but the mid range acceleration puts a massive smile on my face every time. Respect to anyone who can drive the M3 at the edge without going over it.

I have a 27 year old 2.8 litre e36 sedan with Alpina styling and upgrades, never get tired of the sound and responsive throttle even though in my years of ownership I've never needed to redline it, because despite the age, it really is a quick car and I'm not interested in racing peoples shit boxes or losing my licence...again. There's not many cars you can buy 25+ years old that still put a smile on your face years later.

I can attest to BMW customer support. I have an E92 M3, and out of warranty support for it, and previous BMWs has been good. Most recently our 6 year old X5 had cracking leather in side of the driver seat. They replaced it ($2,500) they said becuase of our brand loyalty.

Same here. I bought an F30 328i new 9 years ago and took it in for a service last week. I mentioned to the lady that 8 fully expect wear to the steering bushes so to please check, and we will replace.if required. The car was in for a check up. I also asked to check the timing chain and asked about the transmission and the “lifetime” oil. Upon returning, I was informed the bushes are perfect, rear rotors and discs were changed and the timing chain was checked and no issues were found. BMW say they do recommend Chang the oil in my transmission at around 150/160 km as a precautionary measure so I will get this done. My car has done 143000. This service will cost $2000. I am a locked in supporter of BMW. And the loan car was nice too.

I just bought one here in the USA and I think I drives really well , the ride is firm but I knew that was going to be the case . This car can totally be a daily driver , road noise is a little high but not a real issue . The handling the power though , oh my , it’s unreal !!! Torque everywhere, I have yet to redline it as I’m well below the breakin of 1200 miles , mines in black so the grill really blends in with the rest of the car , great car and very happy I purchased it . Great video love your analysis.

The best 6 cylinder engine in the universe? Back in the day I had a Hemi 265 6 Pack Charger. Those triple 45DCOE Webers were amazing, as was the fuel economy. With Venturis the size of dinner plates and jets that resembled fire hoses, 70ish litres of petrol would easily get me 250km... Joking aside, I’ve wanted an M3 ever since I saw Tony Longhurst wring an E30 M3 around Bathurst. Your review is the first one I’ve seen that captures that depth of feeling. As always, love your work John.

Excellent review John, I love how you moved away from what all other reviewers are doing which is to talk about the new look grill and talk about the cars drivability and BMW's seemingly good customer service in Aus. Here in the UK the dealers don't compete with Lexus for great service and from my experience are probably no better than Ford dealers.

Hey John thanks so much mate, what a lovely surprise to see you answered my question about ride quality.. As someone with chronic spine issues since I was a child it seems to me that a lot of modern cars are way too stiff/harsh than they need to be certainly when you consider their intended use of being daily transport on our D grade roads.. Great to hear the M3 is not too bad.. I have a WN Caprice V and it rides beautifully.. I test drove a Stinger for an hour and that blew me away how comfortable it was in its softest setting.. Fantastic review too mate, like you I would love one but unfortunately can't afford one yet.. Keep up the great work..

i got my m3 xdrive for a week. this is the best review of m3 hands down. It perfectly described my relationship with the car, and everything you said echoes with me. The owner proposition; intimidation;super model... Basically, you described my feeling with your mouth/video better than I can ever do. I wanted to tell my mates my relationship with the car, but my words were dumb and pale. Then I saw your video, it's like, yes, this what I meant. Respect. Question, there're two comments you quoted in the video (including chopstick test from Craig). Where are these comments from and where can I be engaged in future videos? Thanks

Finally, a reviewer who doesn’t bitch and whine about the “harsh ride” in performance cars! Every other review of the ride goes something like this, “meh, it rides quite a lot harsher than the standard car.” Like, no shit dude, it’s a performance car. But most choose to make it sound like a focus RS instead of a slightly tighter M340i for example. Edit: I also can’t get my head around the fact that you guys need to spend right around $150,000 USD for an M3! 🤯

Thanks for the review: Breathtaking undeserved depreciation makes it harder to justify, especially for a business owner, the tax effect and depreciation are hard to swallow. After 2 x M5's a C63s, 2 x Porsches, I am over the real costs of ownership, which does sour the experience. If they didn't lose value so much, You would buy one in a heartbeat. Buy a Mazda 2, drive the hell out of and almost get your money back 3 years later! Drive this sublime vehicle and lose $5 a kilometre. Makes no bloody sense! BTW, off to help my sister pick up her D Max tomorrow that you helped her save 7K on! Cheers

Disappointingly I have owned the car for a year and a half now and my car has been at a BMW dealership awaiting a faulty part from Germany for two months. the sad part is that it is not a major part. I have written to BMW Australia and they are unresponsive as to when the part will arrive in Australia and my car repaired. Very poor customer service from what I thought was a trusted brand. They hide behind a call center located in the Philippines which are trained just to fob you off. disgraceful at best. As it stands I am paying very expensive finance and insurance for a car I cant even drive and have no idea when I will get it back.

As the owner of a F80 M3 Competition who daily drives it and takes it on an annual family ski trip of some 3000km, I can attest to how much of a chameleon it is. On the highway in comfort mode it's firm but compliant enough to be very comfortable on long trips. Put it in sport and take it to some twisties and it has so much grip and ability it's amazing, turn off the nannies and it will try to kill you at every opportunity if you don't respect it. For me the new styling it a bit much and needs some work, maybe the LCI in a few years will make it acceptable to me. PS my daughter loves it, though the twisties can be nauseating! PSS the lack of a DCT is disappointing as it really does make the car feel special/different to a normal/fast bmw eg M340i

OK, I get it John, that Barvarian Money Waster is so incredibly desirable. I've been there and had the experience. Those Barvarian hotties are so good to hang out with as a casual encounter. But hey, keep it no strings attached.

Johnno - I know you think Stellantis is the death star of the automotive world and Carlos Taveras is Darth Vader but hear me out. The true Jedis are the Ferrari engineers that created the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrafoglio (QV). Your fellow drag queen scribes in the UK conducted a comparison test with this new M3 with the QV. Their conclusion? The M3 makes a welcome return to form but the QV remains top of its class. Now before you go on about consumer reports etc, just google the most satisfied car owners in the UK and you will find its the owners of the Guilia sedan; in all states of tune. The force is strong with this one.

Simone I know took their X3 that they bought new from coastline (here on the sunshine coast) BMW in for a service. They got a loan car to use only to realise that it had to be paid for... Only to drive home 10 mins and back to the stealership.. Not really good.. I wouldn't be happy with that.. I think there was an issue with included cleaning I think. Not sure about that

Very nice looking car, rwd, performance, six banger, good enough for daily duties. Everything I want, only nitpick is no manual transmission, but I'd sill love to have one regardless.

Absolutely love your enthusiasm John - it is infectious! The vid was worth watching for me simply to drink in your passion on this incredibly capable car. True passion is rare today so inspiring to see it in spades here. I very much respect the M3 for what it is and represents. There are a number of things about it that scream GIVE IT TO ME but a number of negatives. This car is not for me, not because of the high price (which is ludicrous for any car) but due to a number of design quirks and flat-out mistakes. Just to name one, I'd find it hard to be taken seriously in a car that looks like it has twin vertical virginas pasted onto the front posing as a grill. Reminds me of the EDSEL! Can't unsee that now . . . Alfa Romeo tried a similar oddity and that didn't go well for the look of that particular pseudo-status symbol either. On another note is it the camera angle, my perception or are you sitting awfully close to the wheel while driving in this post? Not a criticism, just a question.

Accurate appraisal on the performance, impressive but hard to exploit. I find it more engaging to push a less capable car, than constantly reigning in hyper performance car. The speeds are sane and controllable :-)

If you can afford $160k for this, you can afford the parts (but you don't have to like it). I mean, the tyres are probably $2k per corner.

"Father John" This review has led me to a session in your confessional. Please forgive me for my previous sins. I have transgressed and poked my wife's Boxter S through a farm fence after a series of bumpy S bends. I have seen the edge Hunter eskish chasing my brothers with a Honda 1000rr on the rev limiter in fifth before i chickened out. And now you tempt me in my ripe old age of 70 with the possibilities of a beast lile this. You are truly a Bad Bad boy. But i too Fu****g want one. Great review.

Hi John I love the intelligence, balance and insight in your reviews. One thing I wonder about is how this car will age, Mr Killmer has some strong views on the limited durability of the plastic parts used in the engine. Perhaps that’s just his way of generating an audience? Thanks again.

@@nazrhael3660 I've seen the new M3 and M4 in the flesh already. It has done nothing to change my opinion on the looks. I find the design to be messy, noisy. It's not just the nostrils/lungs/bumprint up front, I find the overall design to be poor. It wouldn't stop me from owning one though!
