Well they did use leaded higher octane fuel, but they did rallies with them. Of course the honda engine can't be that torquey at the same revs as a 2litre 140hp family car, or else it has some serious space technlology under the hood. The key is to shift the powerband up, you can have the same torque but at higher revs making double the power if the revs are doubled. Anyway I don't doubt the N/A tuning capabilities, it's always a compromise in some area, but everything can be tuned :)

BMW keeps it old school. That's why they last so long.

Great video, I am still some what confused, such as how you lined up the camshaft's before placeing the cam locks on them.

The timing marks on the front of the engine cover have to be lined up in addition to using the cam blocks. The cam blocks hold the camshafts in place and the timing marks establish that the crankshaft is in the correct location. The timing chain holds the the camshafts and the crankshaft in time.

Thanks a bunch - really helpful video! Why do you need the primary exhaust sprocket to be all the way clockwise though (at 1:00 min), you're locking it to the camshaft after the vanos install and it's permanently fixed to the crankshaft (thru the two chains - the long and very short one), correct? The The exhaust camshaft does not change it's relation to the crankshaft therefore it shouldn't matter where in the hole the screw is. The whole point of the wide opening is to be able to position the exhaust camshaft precisely (since the length of the long chain can vary slightly from engine to engine) and nothing else, right?

Back in the 60's/70's were they restricted by cats? What fuel did they run? How long did the engines last with those mods? Only N/A stock engine with that kinda power/weight ratio I can think of is the engine from the S2000.

Hey! Thanks for the video. Was very helpful. We did everything according to this video - but we're facing new sort of problem. The engine still is doing ticking sound. (I had my BMW run on 5 cylinders). Could it be the hydraulic lifters?

According to most forums and my own experience (I have a 1993 e36 325i) its either your lifters if you have a M50 or if you have a M52 it's lifters or worse your vanos. In my case it was lifters. Hope this helps even if its soooo late.

***** it was the lifters, new lifters fixed the noise. They were pretty old.

If I wanted to disable VANOS, couldn't I just prevent these sprockets from moving, and unplug the solenoid controlling the oil flow to VANOS?

I know the engine has to be locked at TDC but are the cam locking blocks attached during this procedure as well?

Hi, i've just done a head gasket on my e34 525i with Vanos. When reassembling the secondary timing chain sprockets and inserting the vanos unit i simply threw the sprockets on making sure the slack in the chain was at the top, inserted vanos then tightened up all the bolts. My worry came after seeing your video. You aligned the sprocket holes to the left. is this important? Does this apply to intake and exhaust sprockets?

Just wondering how you wired in the electric fan? I installed one but it has constant power when the ignition is on. How was yours done?
@eamh2002

How much power is it possible to get out of a 2,5litre m50b25? About 300 with head, valve, cams and ignition system? I know it seems high but people had +200hp 1,6litre tuned N/A cars in the 60-70's..

Do you have a video or instructions on how to install the timing chain(s)? I'm working on an engine that was partially disassembled and I need to install new chain(s). Does the the link pin have to be pushed out with a chain breaker, or is there a different installation procedure? I'm used to older M20 engines with a belt.

I'm Curious. Do you have the lower tensioner in when the sprocket is installed on the exhaust cam? Do I rotate the sprocket counterclockwise (keeping tension on the chain to the right side of the sprocket) when lining up the slots to be justified to the left? This is at 2:08.

i think that M50 have 1 cam shot?

is this single or double vanos ?

Will the s52 be the same as this?
@joenationwide
@joenationwide 9 лет назад
+acroracing almost. Only difference is the S52 primary exhaust sprocket, you center the hole in the slot, you don't align the hole to the right. The Bentley makes this distinction.
