Nathan, Thanks for the video support and sharing the knowledge so that normal owners can understand BMW design faults. These cars are very expensive both to purchase and fix. There are trolls in every website plz ignore the ignorant and continue to help with your well though out fixes.

I am a retired automobile mechanical engineer. I worked in engine for 18 years. What seems to be missing here is that you have ignored the function of the common PCV valve found on every modern vehicle. The normal PCV valve is a very simple inexpensive valve on most cars, and does not include a diaphragm that can rupture, like on this BMW. What it does is restrict air flow from the crankcase at idle, but allow enough to clear the blowby gases without reducing the vacuum level too much. During acceleration, when the the intake vacuum is low, it opens up more to allow the higher blowby gases to be fed into the intake manifold. If there is a backfire on decel, the PCV valve closes. What might be a smarter modification to this BMW vehicle would be your same fix, but include an inexpensive normal PCV valve in series with your vacuum line to the intake manifold.

But remember. a ordinary pcv has to be mounted vertical and will not function laying down, that is why I don't use them , a custom T hose would be needed

@@NathansBMWWorkshop I know this is an old video and maybe you've figured it or maybe not... PCV valves are made for both vertical and horizontal locations. The valve is also spring loaded so it should close no matter which position. Also, all PCV valves need (cleaned)serviced or replaced. I only mention that because I've seen other people's videos where they don't mention that PCV's are a consumable part, that is they need replaced every 50,000 or so.

Hi Nathan, thanks for taking the time to post these videos. They are most helpful. I did the ccv delete on my 04 e46. M54. However, my crankcase is building pressure at idle faster than the port on the back of the manifold can draw. Any ideas on how to solve this? Is pushing oil or of my valve cover gasket.

Hi Nathan, first off thanks for doing all the videos. I've done alot of repairs to my BMW with your instructions and I feel good about doing them with the help of you teaching. One question I can figure out, at 415 you were going to go in with a razor knife and disconnect the vacuum housing (with the hex bolts that you had to pry off). Yours broke free before you cut it but I cant find out in any of the videos what to do with that hose that broke (I capped off the vacuum bar system as you said) but does that hose that originally connected to this piece need capped or did you just leave it upcapped? I cant seem to find this answer is all of the videos that you made. You always just cut it and seal the vacuum bar but never mention that hose that you cut again. Do I cap that or just let it dangle?

I have a 2001 E38 M62TU engine and am still at it based on your great work done. and...I bought the 2002 BMW X5 CCV that will have one hose connected like the 2002 BMW X5, where is the other hose from the oil catch can hooking in. I am deleting the internal OSV, and the pipe under the manifold that goes from the CCV over to the OSV and plugging the hole at front of the engine that would be going down to the OSV. I am not seeing where the second hose hooks in to the engine. I saw another similar video where he actually also used the 2002 external OSV but I could not understand that hose hook up @t if you could help me with where that second hose hooks up. If I use the oil catch can, do I need the 2002 external OSV to be hooked up and where, or just go to the oil catch can. Another thought was to tap a hole in the bottom of the oil catch can and tie it into the low pressure side of the oil filter housing with a T-Connector to return the overflow of the oil catch can to the engine. I hope you can make sense of what I am saying here Nathan. Thanks for your help.

I have a 2006 x5 3.0 and in the winter here in Maine when it gets colder the car starts fine no smoke and sometimes it will start to smoke and shut off and there’s oil in the engine bay over on passenger side I can’t find where it’s coming from. The car will not immediately start back up but will after a few minutes there doesn’t seem to be a loss of oil in the engine as well. I was told the car did not come with a cold climate pcv? Could I benefit from the delete and does this sound like a pcv issue. After i decided to do a Valve cover Gasket and sealing that up pretty good, was getting slight sweating of oil every now and then. I Realized i've open up a whole can of other issue i started getting randum miss fire all over 02 sensor issue came up bank one bank two after driving 80 miles. I think what happend i put stress on the other old hosed hidden the top breather tube i discover a tear on the upper plastic intake hose i notice the rear vaccume line was old and brittle leaking in middle and now getting Lots of oil leak i notice its all coming out of the CCV valve unit especially right where the hose connect to it. So i decided to order the Entire CCV Valve Kit and some 5/16 and 1/8 vaccume line tube just in case and re do everything new. Does this sound common for this to happend car has 137K miles on it Thanks for all the GREAT video GREAT JOB!!!

Brittle hoses can definitely be a problem. I replaced all of mine last winter to try and fix a rough idle. Many were cracking apart when I went to remove the old ones. The valve itself can fail at almost any point, apparently. The diaphragm in it is also rubber, and can get brittle and tear.

Nathan's DIY Garage I liked your videos, very well done. I had a problem out of nowhere, I put a new ccv valve in last year, we went to go on a trip, and there was some smoke when we 1st started it, but that was it. didn't smoke the whole way. We went to leave and it was smoking at every light, and through some lean codes.i went to autozone, pulled the air filter, and noticed the ccv was covered in oil, the dipstick line came off, i put hose clamps on it, and it was OK for about 15 minutes, then it started smoking again, but not as bad and no lean codes. I drove it home, it was all highway, it would only smoke when i let off the gas, and accelerated again. so i kept my foot on the gas a little when we would slowdown. it didn't smoke again until we got off the highway. do you think i blew the diaphragm out of the ccv? all the hoses are good,and still hooked up. I hate to pull the ccv again, think i could do the catch can, or better off plugging therm? thx

Stop messing around with that ccv it will cost you a engine, just run the catch can they are super cheap, and just leave the ccv in place and cut the lines, you must plug the dipstick tube with the catch can and the vacuum log lines going to the ccv

I have a 2002 BMW 530i with the plug from the throttle in the same direction as the one in this video. My CCV also has the vacuum port to the fuel rail plugged off. The fuel pressure regulator is on directly on the fuel filter, that's why the fuel filter cost $75 instead of $20. Anyways I got the car for free so I can't complain. It was leaking badly from the oil seal that seals the oil filter housing to the engine block. I'm replacing everything under there while I'm in there and going to delete the CCV system taking it out completely. I will go the catch can route, because it just makes sense to help keep everything clean. I'm just not sure on if to block off the whole on the oil tip stick or stick a old V8 valve cover style filter on there. I don't want to smell any oil at stop lights since my wife will be using it as her daily. I would appreciate your advice on that specifically and any other suggestions you might have recently come up with that were not discussed here already. I also will be adding a wire extension from the starter signal wire so it will be easier to test the starter in future when needed. I'm will use AMSOIL 5W-40 EURO oil with the WIX XP oil filter. BMW coolant with mixed with Kangen water and DEX 3 ATF for my power steering. I loved your videos I subscribed and will be following your from now on. My next project is going to be replacing the automatic transmission pan and fluid. It would be nice to have you do a video on that next please. BMW call it a lifetime fluid but that's bullshit and you know it. I know that the filter is built into the pan, so you have to buy a whole new pan. I just don't know how to refill it. Wife just gave me a plate of food, got to go now. Your awesome bro keep up the good work. Call me if you would rather chat, I'm old school and hate typing :)) 407 252 8506

Space - it was designed thinking it would never be replaced. Yes if you can find space its better to relocate it - bear in mind the hoses will not reach and you will need to modify both mounting brackets & hoses.

How does the Ecu deal with not having the PCV? Does it through a code? I am in the middle of swapping my blown e39 525I motor to an E46 330I. I am plan on removing all things that are problematic and I could do away with such as the secondary vacuum pump and the back 2 O2 sensors. Also who do you use for tuning your ECU to calibrate delete these items?

my e39 has a fuel line to the ccv what do i do and my intake does have that pluged its in use the line goes under the cabin filter into the bottom the car

What about instead of blocking off the vacuum holes on the intake couldn't you just get a cheap pcv valve and connect the valve cover hole with new hoses? Seems like it would be better for the crank case ventilation.

Hi Nathan. Nice work on your videos. I just did a head gasket replacement on a 2004 m54 car. I also deleted the ccv at the same time. It seems to run good with the exception of white exhaust. Would the lack of sufficient crankcase ventilation cause this to happen? thanks
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+jdshumway Did you check the head for cracks? and did you install the time serts ? Does the smoke smell sweet coming out of the exhaust or does it smell like oil?
@jdshumway
@jdshumway 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage. Yes, I carefully checked the head for cracks and did an eddy current done on the head surface to check for cracks too. I did inserts on every head bolt hole. The exhaust does smell sweet (coolant) but I have no clue from where?
@jdshumway
@jdshumway 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage. thanks for the quick response. I know that some white smoke is expected after a head gasket replacement, but how much is normal?
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
It just depends on how much coolant leaked into the exhaust and converters.

Hey Nathan, if I wanted to bypass the ccv but not remove it, which hoses am I installing breather filters on? Thanks!
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+HarrisMotorsports904 Hello just install the breather on the hose going to the valve cover, and the hose going to the dipstick , dont forget to block off the vacuum hose going to the intake vacuum log,and the small vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator if your car has that one.

Hi Nathan, Is it possible to delete the CCV on the M62 or M62tu? If so, can you advise and document? Thanks.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
Hello yes you can, it depends which year and model m62tu and where your oil separator is, you basically have to disconnect the separator and leave the ccv in place, then run a oil catch can to vacuum and then to the crankcase

Thanks for the video. I want to run e85 in my 2001 bmw 325i (M54). What special (if any) things do I need to do to successfully use e85?
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Jason Fontanoz You can just put it right a m54, it might stumble on cold start if its really cold outside.
@jasonfontanoz
@jasonfontanoz 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage Thank you! I will consider doin that! If its that simple, why are there companies that make these devices that will allow (I guess full functionality) e85 to run in your engine? I watched the docu "pump" and am considering purchasing the device offered from (change2e85 dot com).
@NathansBMWWorkshop

That will fix the cold start problem but it will make it run safe rich and not get as good fuel economy

If you are in a hurry it can be "bypassed" in less time but, the old pcv will remain in the engine bay disconnected.

I have no codes, the engine is just not running smooth like it shoud it has a slight vibration at iddle and also vibrates while driving

Would it be safe for me to block off the oil dipstick vacuum line or should I vent it like you recommend initially? Also, wouldn't venting it cause a vacuum leak or rough idle? I'm not looking to install a catch can.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Michael Brissot If you are not going to install a catch can then leave it open, if you look at my newer video there is a single hose conversion that you can do also, if you just lt it all vent your car will smell like oil at a stoplight from the vapor coming out of the valve cover

Hi Nathan. What's the advantage of removing the CCV? why not just replace it if there is a leak?
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Davison They make the car unreliable because of the rubber diaphragm inside of it, i posted a video last week of installing a oil catch can in place of the ccv, that seems to be the best way to replace it.

Just for the sake of not having to dig all the way down past the throttle body to remove the ccv, can I just cut the pipes filter or block the appropriate pipes then reassemble?
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+red i predator Yes you can, dont forget to check out my oil catch can video, and todays video will be up in a couple hours show a single tube replacement for the ccv, it hooks the valve cover tube to vacuum and you cap the dipstick tube hose.

+Nathan's DIY Garage cool man Ile look out for it, when you said about tapping off the 6 inlets on the intake, what is the reason for the breather rail? dose it help lube something pre combustion? I would say tap them off for clean cool air only...?
@NathansBMWWorkshop

The easiest way is just to cap off the vacuum log on top of the intake, if you dont you will have a vacuum leak

Sorry on late respond, with cap off on radiator ,engine works little bit rough and like it started to misfires but doesn't blow coolant , turn cap on and engine start to shake little bit? I restarted car and works fine, wormed up any take to ride and there is no problems, not even smoke come out from exhaust , coolant level seems ok but I notice little oil drops on garage floor

Just so you know. In the UK this will lead to an instant MOT (inspection) fail. It’s horrible from an emissions stand point and you’ll be breathing in fumes. Happy motoring

I'm curious, why would I need to actually take the ccv valve out of it's mounting place? Couldn't I just cut eevrything off of it and leave it there. It would eliminate having to remove the icv and the throttle body. Or am I missing something? If I were to add a pcv where would it go?
@lootzhimbeyohimbe6346
@lootzhimbeyohimbe6346 5 лет назад
Tony Runyon , I was wondering the same thing, just leave it bolted in and deal with the venting the oil dip stick valve cover and closing the off the intake.

Has anyone ever tried simply running high temp hose instead of the plastic stuff and moving the CCV valve a few inches out from under the intake so it could be serviced easier? Seems like you could keep the basic valve/system but use the rubber hoses to move it around a bit rather that using a catch can.
@hmongkieyaaj1491
@hmongkieyaaj1491 6 лет назад
jsgold2000 that is also what i was thinking but im not sure if anyone has done that. It does make perfect sense to just replace the plastic tubes with high temp hoses and clamps.
