More N54's more problems..... but really this?!?!
Today was not a good day. It's time to see if the engine from the E90 is ok. On top of that i wanted to get a list together of service items to tackle while the engine is out..... however, i may have gotten ahead of myself a little here.
As i mentioned in the video, this is filmed as it unfolds.... i was pretty bummed out in the vid. But we'll work something out, the E92 will live on soon.

You will get low compression on some cylinders if the engine has been sitting for a while(few weeks+) and the hydraulic lifters have depressed. Only way to tell is to start engine for 10min and let it warm up. Then do compression test. Seen this scare many people.

Holy shit, of course, i didnt think of that. If that is happening, a leak down test in its current state should come up good shouldn't it? It's a bit of a pain in the ass to install in to the car to run for 10 mins lol.

@@ZeroTo60Tube How hard is it run on the stand? Dont you need CAS module and key connected? And does the oil cooler need to be fixed to maintain oil pressure?

Walnut blast the head while its easy to get to everything. Carbon buildup on the valves will not let them seat properly and can cause compression issues

put some oil down the plug hole if your compression comes up it is the rings if the compression does not come up it is the valves swap the head over. Buy a bimmer they said it will be fun they said...

150 psi on a cold not run for a while engine is fine. As long as they are all within spec dude. Cold un-oiled engine compression test are taken with a grain of salt.

No more compression tests! The numbers can be easily flawed. Just wait for the leak down tester and do the test on both motors. Lets go from there, right now you're going around in a circle. If engine 2 ringlands are bad, I would install a set of CP pistons w/ the stock rods. Shouldnt take you more than a week to disassemble and reassemble.

Do a wet compression test on cylinder 4 and see if it changes significantly. You'll narrow down whether it's head gasket or piston rings. Hopefully not a cracked block.

Either way you would have to build a “decent motor...” take it in sections and do it properly the 1st time around! I for 1 would love to see you build a “bullet proof” motor....fyi...very hard to break due to quality parts!

Additional items for consideration. Boost solenoids, plastic adapter on coolant hose going into the bottom of the oil filter housing (upgrade to aluminum), and if you are looking to add some upgrades consider inlets while the engine is out.

Haha, I see your frustrations and see it myself as well. I can't believe I love this N54 as much as I do but intimate with it the last year or so I wouldn't have it any other way! I love to hate this engine!! Keep chugging forward sir! The payoff is worth it and you know it!!

Literally got a 335 the same time you started the channel. Been dealing with a smoking issue for months, narrowed it down to turbos. Ordered rb 2s. Now seeing this happen to you scares me, I feel like your engine is my engine lmao. Seeing all this is stressing me out 🤣

As long as you don't go crazy with Boost psi, and do your maintenance you should be fine.

In saying that though......you have two engines you cant use. Parts from one into another. Fresh rings and fresh rod bearings......Its not a rebuild, but might be enough (assuming you dont shoot for moon on high boost) to get you enjoying the beast again

water pumps are not reuseable if it isnt filled with coolant, if you remove the working one out of the car and be leaving it out for a while i would recommend you fill the pump with coolant and seal the holes up from the shaft running dry

I’d be digging a bit deeper on this, cylinder 4 on both engines? Perhaps no 4 is the one that gets the wear when dirt gets past the air filter? Both running cheap polyurethane dci’s? I’d try a wet compression on all 6 and see if it lifts number 4 value, this will tell you if u have ring wear.

I'd turn the engine over by hand for a few minutes just to get the oil pressure up before a compression test just to be safe. This thing will be a weapon once the bottom end is built would suggest bee hive valve springs in the top end it'll make revving easier on the motor.

I really dont think you gonna have luck with all the people said, lifters do not cause bad compression, it could take more time to reach max compression if is on the intake side, if is on the exhaust side it would go way faster up on compression, for the noise of the engine on 4º cylinder i woul say you have leaky valve probably do the carbon build up, probably intake side. i dont think that is a bad engine beause it have really good compression on all other cylinders. Make the leak down test, but almost 100% that is just bad valve seal, easy fix. Always follow from portugal, keep up and best luck.

Leak test it. If it's bottom leakage = cylinder, get new piston rings, hone it slightly and it should be good. No major costs involved.

What i found strange is the thermostat in the oil filter housing where the oil cooler adapter is supposed to not open until 230 degrees F or 110 C so it shouldn't have pumped oil t the oil cooler

Tak a piston out of one engine an put it in the other for now. It will cost a few$ but it's a good stopgap. Gets done all the time on old rwd volvo

It didnt cross my mind while filming, that whatever is going on with the 2 motors, i will very likely be able to make a good one between them, with out breaking the bank. So that is a good thing.

It's sad that you get second engine and is faulty. This 4k will be enough to fix your first one engine. . I hope you will find a way to get e92 to live. Good luck.

Maybe Corbin build up on rings use Marboluis Marvellous mystery oil down the cylinder let it sit than re do compression test on cyl4

Thanks dude, really appreciate the thought. While filming it didnt even occur to me that whenever is wrong with this motor, i will be able to make one good engine from the two i have with out breaking the bank. We'll work something out pretty soon.

Honestly not sure. I have been reading and it seems normal for cyl 4 or cyl 5 do often have problems, but its probably nothing more than coincidence.

Well since the e92 low compression issue popped up i have been researching rebuild prices. So new pistons, rods, head studs, gaskets etc. And i am expecting a basic re-build like that, so not even removing the crank, would set me back the best part of $5000 if we do the labour. So it's a little out of reach for a while. What i could probably do which didn't occur to me while filming is strip both engines down and make one good one from the two. This should only set me be back around $1500 in parts and gaskets.

From your experience on twin turbos . Do you still recommend 19t or a single turbo setup like 6266 or 6466 ? For 550 whp

In Australia or any RHD the 19t or even 17t are a no brainer for bang for buck. You can fit them for sub $2000AUD all done. Where a single is about 5 times the price here. A single will make more power on less boost, but 550whp is nothing too crazy from this platform. If 550whp is your ultimate goal, i think the 17t or 19t are a brilliant option. Yes my e92 is down on compression after only a few months at 27psi, but then this e90 engine is down on compression and it was only running stock turbos with MHD stage 2. I think i have just been unlucky. However the more research i do, i am leaning towards thinking for a daily car, keep it under 25psi, in fact the closer to 20psi the better. Only wind it up for the occasional race. That said the 17Ts at 20psi on e60 are still bloody rapid.

@@ZeroTo60Tube to be honest I am not a big fan of anything above 20psi. I am a jet pilot and live in saudi arabia.even here airplane struggle to make thrust for take off. Air is less dense and hot a s humid. So I need something that can make me 550whp on low boost and don't damage the engine

Unfortunately the 335d wasn't sold new here in Aus. There are a couple of imports floating around, but very rare to see. We did get the 330d, but again pretty rare. Aussies were not big fans of diesels cars.

Yeah, you are on the money. When i filmed this, it didnt occur to me i could do this. I have been pricing up builds for the E92 motor, but with forged rods and pistons etc. A stronger motor. Although building a stronger motor is out of the questions, i could definitely use parts from the two to make a good one.

What are the chance of both engine being low with compression and in the same cylinders. I dont think that test is being done correct or something just isn't correct. I would check with a professional mechanic on this before m making any other decisions.

You are right to be concerned. The leak down tester i am waiting on will be more helpful. 1 thing to note, i didnt realise while filming, but I tested cylinder 4 three times in this video and the compression went up every time.

If we do the labour ourselves i am still expecting around $5000AUD by the time all the little bits get done. To do a basic build with forged rods and pistons, new rod bearings with out touching the valve train etc.

Zero To 60 ive been doing everything myself. I replace the turbos. New valve cover & gasket and put a new oil breather cap and oil catch can.I check the compression 150-165 psi in all cylinders. But the car feels perfect no misfires softdrive. It is just the smoke a lot and i see oil leaking on the exhaust.

Gabriel Torres u using the right oil? 5w30 Castrol, nothing else, when I got my car back it had been serviced with 10w40 and it got hot real quick With that, changed to 5w30 and it’s back to normal, my first set of turbos only leaked when the oil got hot 120’c+ and filled McDonald’s car park up with oil smoke once 🙈

br4d101 yes i used 5w30 castrol synthetic when i install the new turbos and it is only 40k miles on the engine right now an looking on the tooling that i need to do the valve stem seal if that does not fix it i will do the piston rings. im not a mechanic but i think i can do it

Gabriel Torres oil leaking on the exhaust is either from you rocket cover gasket or the car is breathing heavy causing the rear turbo inlet to fill with oil which makes it drip onto exhaust, there is a flap on the rocker cover breather pipe that can get damaged, if recheck all your pipe work mate, 40k is nothing for these engines! What are the turbos? Chinese ones?

Just bung it in and run it man while you get your funds back up and fix original engine. what have you got to lose. Its suck man - I am going through N55 issues and will commence engine swap today... My mechanical just told me to buy a Ford - usual comment in Australia. I will have spent way too much on my car now but what U gunna do? That motor will run for the time you need to get your funds back in order...

Yeah you are probably right. When i was filming the video, it pulled 120psi, then 135psi then 150psi. But in my mind i just took it as a complete fail on that cylinder. Watching the vid back this morning i even say the cylinder has no compression...... I was definitely jumping to conclusions.... I will blame on the stuck plug and the oil slick getting to me. Will go and have a clean up in the shed and another look shortly.

The guys there seem to be doing a few I'm not sure how popular it would be in nsw but as the cars come down in price may be more of a demand. I used to work in the automotive industry for most of my career and trust me I'd rather an n54 powered car over other cars in that same price point.

You are correct! The plan was to go the cheaper route with this e90 engine and keep making vids, while we do the e92 engine properly..... maybe not 40psi properly. But you know.

While filming i had "build costs" in my which i had been looking at to build the e92 engine with forged rods/pistons etc. Like a proper upgrade. That would be too much of a stretch right now. But making 1 good motor from the 2 i have is definitely do-able.

Mate, you look so despondent :( How many ads do I need to watch until you've made enough to buy a pint? Don't want to be that guy telling you what to do when you know way more about this engine than me, but I'd find out exactly what's wrong with the original engine. If it's f*cked then you can investigate this one deeper. The fact they both still run ok'ish says to me that they are fixable. Might require a little specialist time but it's never mental costs if you're doing all the donkey work yourself (stripping and cleaning and sourcing parts and that). Might even be that it's just a parts swap and boom, back on the road.

Fuckity fuck fuck. This situation sucks a bit. Haven't seen a vid for a while as I got my E90 all done now with the 17t's, finally... I'm with Steve SAS, regarding the compression testing. I honestly wouldn't stress too much until the leakdown test to be honest, easy to say I know.

Just buy an M car and be done with it. The lesser models are good for what they are, but they are not performance models. You are just throwing money away.

Even with these setbacks this car owes about half what a S55 powered M car costs in Australia and still less than a rough high milage E92 M3 would cost. On top of that its faster in a straight line than a brand new f90 m5. If you are only measuring performance, this n54 smashes any M car out of the water when it comes to value for money. However, it certainly doesn't handle like an m car, or give you the driving sensation an m car does, i will give you that, haha.

@@ZeroTo60Tube the way I see it is you have 2 motors - you don't know what the issues are with the E90 so my vote would be to tear them down and see if you can pinch parts from one another to rebuild. E.G if the E90 motor is due to a bad head/valve you could head swap the heads so you have one good motor. IMO the tear down video(s) would make great content and potentially drive some views and hopefully memberships to fund rebuilding it. Perhaps next video get the inspection scope out on the E90 motor and see what's hiding in cyl 4?

Zero To 60 Could definitely be worse! If it makes you feel any better I’ve just finished building my track car after 3 years and have only done two events. I’ve been collecting parts to upgrade transmission (ZF320) and do a forged turbo build (M50) and I had to undergo emergency-surgery on my back last week. As a result of the disc/nerve issue, I’ve now lost the ability to use my left foot - so I can’t even depress a clutch anymore! If you come across a 135i / 335i DCT, let me know 🤣

Correct.... On the channel we have both an e90 and an e92 335i, i am referring to the engines from each vehicle. As per the video title the engine is a N54.

Hey man thanks so much for the support. A build will happen the funds are there. In this video i was pretty bummed out. It was an emotional roller coaster as the spark plug felt like it was about to snap off in the head, then come free, then the oil slick, then the compression. Although i can't afford to build an upgraded motor at this point in time. Something i didnt realise while filming, i can make one good motor from my two if need be to get us by for now. Hopefully have the leak down tester soon so i can work out of it is top or bottom end on both engines.

Run it on 5 cylinders and call it an Audi. With that said those engines have hydrology lifters and they are also known for crusty valves from carbon buildup. Get the cleaner and clean the valves while it's out and install it back in and run it. What you lack in funds you will make up in money.

Do as "CG-Recommended " said, do a wet compression test on cylinder 4, and as "FriendlyIntentions " said as long as it is within spec you should be good. With a wet cylinder compression test it should jump at least 20 psi. Team N54, good luck! CG-Recommended

You have a problem with both engines on the same cylinder I’d suggest it’s in the inlet manifold design that cyl 4 gets more air than the other cylinders and causes a lean out in that cylinder get that inlet off and on a flow bench to test the cylinder flow rates other wise you may be playing with fire again and totally fuck another engine or worst still a $10000 built engine find the cause of why cylinder 4 fucks up

Do little carbon rocks get caught on the valve seat? Some must break off and pass thru yeah?? Personally I don't think it's ring land, they burn oil bad when that happens. Good luck fixing it Andrew, you'll get there mate 👍

Thanks man, yes very likely this is more so a top end issue. I only ran this engine for a few seconds, but it was smooth. Not like my e92 which has a lumpy idle.

This is crazy. Remember I said I had 2 n54's both with slightly bent valves on cylinder 4. My money is still on the same. Both times there was no change. I would give that a shot.

Have you tried to pour a little bit of oil in cylinder 4 and do a compression test ? If the compression doesnt go up it could be something realated to the valves not sealing properly on that cylinder.

Take my advise with big bag of salt, opposed to a grain. But you have 2 engines and unless the cylinder walls are busted on both you can at least built one good motor out of it, right? Just put them both behind each other and start taking things apart and organise it well (the stuff that comes off) Could be bad advise, so please think about it. I'm not a mechanic Thanks by the way to put the spoiler in the title or I would've been more heartbroken. I do feel like you (guys) are nearing level 'expert' on N54 and S62 engines Who knows, perhaps one day open up another business fixing these engines and other stuff obviously. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole video and feel the pain. Real emotions. Great to hear that you'll be pushing on the with 335i TeamN54!, will run the streets again soon enough!

@@ZeroTo60Tube Also perhaps bag and label everything. Why not put all the parts per cylinder in one bag and label it 'cylinder 1', 'cylinder 2', etc.. A bit more work but you will keep it tidy and half of those parts would need to be organized anyway. All in all alot of work. Good luck. It will make for great content as well, for me at least. But I think most will enjoy it as well.

Ah man, I hope leakdown test gives positive results. If it turns out bad, and wet compression also no improvement, did 27 psi kill it, I mean cylinder pressures must be really high at that psi right? Seems very high to me, but I do know others running crazy boost levels even 30psi 😣 hope you don't give up on the N54, maybe save up for Forged parts and do a build when you can afford it?

This e90 engine was stock turbo running stage 2+ mhd and it is also down on comp. So maybe its just a thing that happens with N54s at a certain age.... In reality we still dont know exactly what has caused each motor to be down on comp. We will keep investigating. Definitely not giving up on the N54. Not a quitter. But i was pretty disheartened in this video. I bought the spare e90 (which i couldn't really afford at the time) in case the e92 motor had any problems, so i could keep making videos. But for both engines to down on compression was a significant kick in the balls. Although i can't afford to do a proper forged build right now. Something that didnt occur to me while filming was that i can afford to strip both motors down and make one good one from the two. So we will work something out whatever the problems are. But need to wait for that leak down tester, find out if its top or bottom end issues.

🙈oh no mate, that’s not good! Was edge of my seat when u was pulling that plug out! Think you should take the valve cover off and have a look at the valves, if u can’t see anything then remove the head, it’s good content mate! Feeling for ya with that other engine though, I’ve bought 2 supposedly ‘good’ engine for imprezas I’ve had n found out they’re knackered! Well annoying! Apparently you can fit the N53 head on as they flow a lot better with bigger valves! A friend is having it done right now!

I too was shitting bricks with the plug. In the video, it doesnt really show how much force was on it. I was so read for it to snap. Very interesting about the N53 head, i have never head of that being done.

Zero To 60 Vargas has had it done and has a flow chart for it, pretty hard to find the info but it’s there! it’s a good mod to do as it flows almost as well as a fully ported and polished N54 head, they are really cheap compared to the N54 heads to! My friend is having schrick cams fitted as well as the n53 head, he’s spent a small fortune on his though, the whole engine is fully forged and this is his next step! It’s sitting comfortably at 650hp!

The leak down should come up good if it's just the lifter blead down from sitting if it still failed a wet compression test will be either a good way to confirm or deny its results too... either way man good luck I hope it's as simple as a empty lifter for you 😊🤘

Maybe the headgasket gave in the old engine... Not every compression issue need machining... sometimes you get lucky.

*Yes* do a full build. Very good idea for not only reliable power but brilliant content for your channel. And no where near as hard as the Internet would have you believe. "Spotless and meticulous" are your two key words for an engine build.

The direct injection bm’s have an issue with valve coking, this might be the reason your down on compression. If you a good clean of the intakes and it may solve your issues worth looking at both heads to see if that’s the issue on any of the engines.

I feel for you man, I had a similar experience where I did a track day, got home, next day turned in on and got a "low oil pressure warning" lift the hood and could hear rod knock. Had planned to do a build n54, not after having it for only 4 months. Problem with my build is I needed a new crank shaft.

@@ZeroTo60Tube Yea my heart too sunk through the floor. the failer was a blocked oil pickup. Previous owner(s) must have broken a fan belt and not had the sump removed to clear out all the crap. Tracking it would have sucked up more belt debris blocking the pickup. The low oil pressure sensor warning only goes when low oil pressure is met. Doesn care about RPM so 6k rpm flat out 20psi oil pressure not fault code.
