TO CONFIRM: This is just an offshoot of the crazy success we had on the gofundme. This is not what the Gofundme was about, but it might help some people working on a budget that want to try a 8HP with stock TCU. None of these issues exist if you use a lamik controller and hey this might not work yet either....... but lets find out together.
I am excited for the developments in this. Recently having joined the n54 universe. This seems like an amazing thing to do and improve the car responsiveness on a daily basis. Because ZF8HP is awesome
Incredibly excited to see how the 8HP plays out. Could be a great opportunity for the x-drive cars. Andrew, you are a legend. Btw, love that jack-o'-lantern interior!
I swapped an 8HP70 into my 2013 charger a few years back. My charger originally had a NAG1 or Mercedes 722.6 so the cars computer system was not compatible with the 8 speed. I have an aftermarket TCU that relays the cars info via canbus to the stock 8HP70 TCU and relays the transmission data back to the car. The car just thinks it has the original transmission installed and working. It all works well and the car drives like a factory 8 speed equipped car. The transmission is running off fairly limited information but has zero issues.
ZF6 with XHP v3 was already fantastic, chit the ZF8 is definitely superior (especially after it’s tuned). Excited to see where this goes! If I hadn’t manual swapped my 335 I was thinking of either a DCT swap or something like this.
Awesome to watch all this come together. Being able to manipulate all the electronics is cool as shit. Glad there are people like you that have a good grasp on all this stuff. Looks like I need to work on my computer skills if I'm gonna keep messing with the BMWs. This is why I like my e39 better than the e90!
Watching this video gives me hope on a future swap on my e90 N54. It’s more complicated tho since mine is an xdrive model but still gives insight on what I might need to address in order to get it to work.
Hi one k, that was already a job that someone I know did...the outputflange of the 8hp x drive is the same as the 6hp. The specific guy came from an e83 with the 6hp/6gm output transfercase and built a setup of s54+8hp70+e83tc...he said he only needed a spacer for the frontdriveshaft
@@ZeroTo60Tube contrary to everyone’s beliefs, I don’t mind the smg trans (in manual mode only) to be honest 😅 but my car isn’t used to race etc just cruise and a little spirited driving. Convince the old man to do it, then I might change my mind depending on his review 😉
After you have watched it, let me know if you can think of what might not work.... This is a huge task to end up with a error free setup..... Can we make it happen?
The dct door opening… i thought it was just my car after the swap. Glad its supposed to do that. Btw, you guys are rubbing off on me. I bought my second e9X and its coming in soon. Now Ill have the toy and the nice daily LOL
Oh, and for the dif ratio you can try the 2.81 335d. Should be close enough that it falls within the slip tolerance.Might not even need the custom tune.
@@ZeroTo60Tube just take Some 8hp stuff from junkyard. Take it to workshop bolt make wiring isn and bang. Cars is running. Gearbox is handling 700 nm. It’s 8hp45. Only problem I have is to make 8gears counter on cluster and make a proper tune for gearbox
I think i am just as excited to see if we can make it all communicate together. Leaning how to manipulate the electronics will be more and more helpful as more retrofits and swaps come in to play on the platform
I thought about doing the same stuff, however my never ending b8 s4 project is getting in a way. If I were you, I’d use a zf 8 from the lci n55 x5, use the cas module from the same x5 the trans came from and update either your ecu’s isn or update the isn in the cas. Trans security is not quite related to the isn, it has security system which resembles older ews versions if bmw docs to be believed.
Lol wow the OCD level has surpassed mine...Still haven't put the car back together yet...but I believe I'm leaving that manual in there. Good luck sounds like it will be fun and frustrating
Andrew i know with the ls1 swaps in the e90 series you join the can hi and can low wires on the dme plug that goes in the cabin then it tricks all the modules in the car because engine and transmission modules are no longer connected and the rest of the car still talks and is happy so you might be able to trick modules if can hi and can lo is bypassed in certain modules maybe something to look into.I finally got my e92 355i registered baskit kase is a go cheers glenn
I know this is not related, but do you have any recommendations on what to do for harsh shift from 2-3 in the 6HP when not in sport mode? Sometimes I feel it's hesitating to shift and when it does that the shift is pretty rough. My friend recommended I just get the trans oil changed but I've been getting conflicting information from other sources.
Love the Terracotta rear seats! Imagine the fronts and door cards will be going in next? I swapped my whole black interior for the coral red and love it.
Wpuld love to see you fully building that X5 Going to pick one up soon my self and would love to build it off its tits downside its the 3.0i m54 but still be fun build (hills
The LCI DSC pump is different because they removed the longitudinal sensor from the DSC pump. I have fitted a 6hp28 with e-shift to my e90 and would of loved to fit 8hp70 but the controller stuf made me reconsider... hope you make it .
Interesting, do you know if you can run the older DSC pump on an LCI setup any way? I had checked with owner prior, however just did an actual vin check and we had the compliance date not the build date. So this car does have the older DSC pump. How has your 6hp28 been going?
Another difference between the DSC pumps, that I figured out the hard way doing a cruise control retrofit (option $544), is the LDM(Longitudinal Dynamics) module. Early cars (before 2007), have a separate module to calculate longitudinal dynamics, It's a little white box made by Temec wired to the pt-can. Later cars (2007 beyond and LCI) don't need this box. Explanation on the tech manual is that the function of calculating longitudinal dynamics was taken over by added software in the DSC module
@@ZeroTo60Tube i don`t think you can run non lci dsc on lci car, 6hp28 is going well no problems mine is a diesel 330d so no adapters pushing about 600nm maybe a little more...
If xhp doesn't come through Olza on spoolstreet has managed to change the diff ratio on the DCT and do custom flashes so he might be able to help with the 8hp
Whoa I knew there were about 4 different electrical revisions from early 06 to late 07 but I didn't really know what they entailed. I had no idea it was how the ptcan communicated! My N52 to N54 awd to rwd swap using an dsc pump from my 07 into the lci car might be the issue I can't get it working yet! My donor car is a 03/07 build so the dsc module would need to be even earlier manufactured. Also if I kick in some gofundme money will you guys hire a lawn guy? Or just buzz the string trimmer around? The grass is killing me :)
Good morning from Germany, I wrote you a lot of times about possible zf8 swaps. So what I see you are doing right is: zf8 shifter: will work, im sure you gonna use a gasoline zf8hp45:gonna work (pnp) might try out to swap the outputflange over, use the zf8hp45 with unlocked ews: will be needed as the gearbox checks for an ews answer and unlocking will be mandatory(even in my e46 330ci swap that will run OEM tcu, plus a interfacecontroller and gets a map from xhp=absolutely possible)....using the 8hp without a interface (for canbus translation) or standalone controller ...will might get hard, can't give you a big promise. Others tried that long ago before and the reason why even e60s +e90s swaps with a 6hp are going to use such a controller. Please contact me, id really like to Chat with you in depht and add you to a zf8 swap Chat group !
@@maxgr7723 the box is about £350-600 here in uk, turbo lamik controller is about £1400, let’s say a mechanic charges you £1000 to fit all for you. £3000 for a ZF 8? I think it’s worth it only if your gonna be keeping car for a while.
All 6hp from e60 lci are electronic shifter and none of them have ISN register, you can just straight swap trans, just code vin with winkfp and you are done.
I assume this would require MSD81 just like the DCT? I'm 6MT right now but want to do a DCT/ZF8 swap because I've damaged my input shaft bearing and can't shift faster than either
I think so. However, i was talking with someone who knows the DME back end very well and didnt seem to think it would be an issue. The DCT swap "needs" or should i say needed an MSD81 so it can be flashed with a factory DCT BMW DME flash. However from 2017/2018 time a lot of work was done to port different DME flashes like the "1m" flash on to different DMEs. This car is MSD81 but i will try and find out if it is definitely needed later on. Taron, got the 8hp trans going through the gears in manual mode with a MSD80.
Holy Shit batman, Are you sure you don't work for IBM, acronym city ... how long was your script .... Love it 🙂 From a logical perspective I reckon the E series Electronic Shifter may be more compatible than an F series? (Zero Research - Sorry)
@@pov_driver no I don't think. Some canbus exchange through an interface will be needed no matter what you decide. Its just the question which controller you will be going to use as you'll be in need to decide if you want a standalone or OEM setup. Both will communicate with the DME/DDE...only one will send the informations immediately to the valves the other will translate for the OEM tcu...but it still is super fast. The gearbox will be an 8hp70 from any xdrive car...you might need to ad a spacer to the frontdriveshaft rest is pnp...maybe an oilcooler adapter too...right now there are at least 4 m57 and some of them are xdrive, I know of, running an 8hp.
Unfortunately it's not that simple. Our e53 tow car is on my mind for a ZF8 swap as well. There is no way to run a ZF8 TCU with an E53 chassis. That said, definitely possible with a Lamik controller. He has done many ZF8s behind the M57 motors. His controller will do everything and the car wont even know there is a different box in the car.
Would you recommend this over another 6HP21 on a daily driven N54 car with 19ts in the event the original tranny is on the way out? On my other cars I've blown up a couple of the 6hps now (older units mind you) wherever I'm running higher torque with grippy rubber.
The experience is definitely better, however you need an aftermarket controller. So there is no cheap way of getting a 8hp behind a n54, you may as well do it properly and use a 8hp70
@@ZeroTo60Tube Interesting and understandable but wasn't the N55 available with an 8HP on the F30 while the early N55s were controlled by the same ECU as the late N54s? So with this logic shouldn't the architecture for the ZF8HP microcontroller be compatible with the architecture for the MSD81 DME?
@@funfun5656 I know Probabaly 10 people that tried. It’s not possible. You can’t get a dsc unit that works with a 8hp and the 135i chassis. There are other issues like frm and cas problems. But the killer is the dsc.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Just because I'm stubborn I decided to look into it a bit further and I genuinely think it comes down to who's crazy enough to write a rom capable of interpreting the signals from the ECU and visa versa with the space provided by the original flash memory vs just buying a genuine open controller. It's probably doable but unless you were to do something like xHP and sell the flash afterwards there's no way the amount of work necessary to make it happen on the stock electronics is a better option than buying an existing solution. The 8HP is probably the best automatic available though...almost works like a manual that somehow has a torque converter.
@@funfun5656 yeah you are spot on a custom rom that can communicate with the DSC unit would be a definitely solution. Thinking out loud do you know anyone that might be able to do this?
Pretty sure most Zf8s have a PTCAN and a PTCAN2 with the F series, I think even late E series, which may cause some issues based on the TCU inside the trans🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@ZeroTo60Tube give me two vehicles maybe 2011 E series z4 and a F series 335i and I will pull wiring diagrams for both transmissions and gear selectors, if there is a PT2 there will be a canbus wire for it
Yes, his adapter would be great for retrofits when you want to use the stock TCU in any car. However for our use case, id probably prefer a lamik controller. Even xHP are ditching stock TCU for some of their latest projects by the looks of things.
@@rickybobby3043 I’ve seen a stock 8hp50 do a 4.2 second 100-200. Which is about a second quicker than I’ve seen a stock 6hp21 go. You need a lot more power to drop that second off the draggy time. But quicker shifts will help as well. Definitely a better box for making your car faster. I have heard huge torque numbers been estimated in regards to what the 8hp can hold if you pull torque on a shift. But don’t want to relay them until I have seen some more actual numbers.
Let's play the acronym game, and see who survives lol. So thankful I play with the zf manual, but love the content on the auto stuff. Cool to learn about.
