In this video I share you guys my experiences with an issue I've seen a lot lately which is an old / faulty oil filter cap potentially causing catastrophic issues to the N63 and S63 engines.
People are accidentally disposing of the pressure relief valve with their old oil filter and this is a silly mistake with big consequences.
OIL FILTER CAP - BMW part number 11427615389

You are a legend, sir! I'm a longtime BMW owner and bought an F10 M5 about 6 months ago. Ahead of this, I spent countless hours researching all the issues with the S63 engine, but I never came across this pressure relief valve design flaw. I've not changed oil myself yet, as the car just had a service ahead of me buying it, but I'm half tempted to change oil now just to check this, as well as to clean the oil pickup tube (which you mentioned in an S63 teardown video). I'm subscribed!

Thank you ! The S63 is an awesome engine, just need some special attention to a few details and if serviced properly it will outlast the car

Hi, new subscriber here! I just watched your S63TU video and came to this video after you mentioned the oil filter cap valve issue. I had the same exact issue happen to my N63TU when I went to an oil change shop for a quick change when I was short on time. After my next oil change, I noticed that the valve was missing in the filter. I replaced the oil filter cap with a brand new one that included the valve and changed the oil myself. I believe this was around the same time that I started experiencing a VANOS code "132408 VANOS, exhaust: camshaft not at locking position at start". I recently started getting another code but this time, for the camshaft on bank 2. All 4 VANOS solenoids were replaced a few months ago as well. So to clarify, oil filter valve cap was missing, then new cap was installed, codes started showing up, then and all VANOS solenoids were replaced. My car has still been running fine and performs very well with my modifications, but I'm looking to hear from you on how I can resolve my issue. Thanks in advance.

Hi, did you use ISTA to delete the engine adaptations after the changes were made ? You basically changed oil pressure and flow therefore confusing the ECU on how to effectively advance/retard the cams - I’m not saying this is the issue but it would be my starting point before replacing any more parts.

Hey what do you think about the reliability of the N63R (N63TU2). Especially when it comes to pushing a stage 1 or so. What would you recommend?
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 9 месяцев назад
Hi, that engine is actually one of the most advanced (and reliable) N63's out there that have come on the newer models and although I have not rebuilt one of these so far, I can assure you that frequent oil changes will be your best bet in keeping these engines safe. It will have pretty much the same HEAT related issues as the other N63 / S63 versions and tunning it usually increases the heat in the engine bay - As long as you dont go crazy on boost levels or Pops & Bangs it should be safe enough to use as a daily car.

Daniel, why is my s63 burning so much oil? There is no leaking anywhere in the engine bay whatsoever. The exhaust smoke is only intermittent and I have been told the PCV system is the likely cause, despite all the PCV parts are new, including Index 12 injectors and air oil separators inside the valve covers? Should I switch to thicker, ester based synthetic oil?
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects 2 месяца назад
There are a few reasons why they burn through oil however the most common since you replaced all listed above would be the Valve Stem seals. What car do you have and whats the mileage ? I use 5w40 here in Australia and even after a full engine rebuild my car still uses about 1 litre of oil every 1500-2000kms with absolutely NO visible smoke - (only on the first run when at the drag races)

We all know N/S63 runs hot with turbos being almost inside the damn engine, and stock thermostat opens at 108°C, do you think it would be a good thing to put in 90°C thermostat in?!
@dnl35projects
@dnl35projects Месяц назад
I won't challenge what the engineerings decided when they came up with that thermostat and all consequences attached to changing it's temp. My honest believe is that these engine will run cooler when service is done more often and properly. I see people not servicing their cooling system or just filling up with water and when you do that you create air pockets in the system causing it not to work as effectively.

What the hell was wrong with the spin on metal can oil filter??? The 22-RE in my 1988 Toyota truck had one, 330k on that engine and it ran like new, didn't use oil, sadly totaled out by a tree falling on it. The 700whp supercharged LQ9 in my 1989 Caprice uses that type of filter as well, 10,000 hard ass miles on that build in the past 4-5 years and no engine/oil/bearing problems.

Yes Aaron I agree, manufacturers have cut costs on things that definitely shouldn't be made of plastic specially considering how HOT these engines operate.
@sharedsailing4787
@sharedsailing4787 9 месяцев назад
BMW is infamous for the amount of plastic in their engines. They can get away with it because BMW owners tend to be either: 1. Wealthy people who buy cars new and trade them in when the warranty expires 2. Enthusiasts who aren't afraid to put money into the car.
@AaronSmith-kr5yf
@AaronSmith-kr5yf 9 месяцев назад
And its not just BMW going with this nonsense plastic filter cap/cartridge oil filter. My past two Toyotas have used them as well(4.6 V8 Tundra and 3.5 V6 Lexus ES350). I've heard stories of people breaking the filter cap on those engines not using the correct tool. But nothing like that BMW nonsense where you can send that critical part down the neck of one of those oil change bucket thingys shops use when they put the car on the lift. And not even notice you did it. If you weren't familiar with BMW's you wouldn't know there was that oil pressure bypass spring in the filter cap.
