Diy Maintenance on a BMW is like going down a rabbit hole. First it's a simple diy oil change and many tools purchased and RU-vid diy later, I'm looking at an oil gasket pan replacement. What's next? Rebuilt my n52 motor?? There is something addictive about doing your own repairs. I can afford to pay the mechanic to do this. But why would I pay someone to do all the fun stuff?? I just love this shit! Dont ask me why.

Haha I love it as well! I went down the same rabbit hole as you. Each repair, I learn a little bit more and gain a little bit more confidence. I aspire to know everything about this car, so why would I take it to a mechanic if I think I can do it myself?! Thanks for watching!

There really isn’t anything you can do yourself on these or any car. I’ve found that a lot of “professionals” are only faster (not better)as they’ve done certain jobs many times and know the secrets but with patience you can do anything, of course you do need the right tools but that’s a given. I’ve done some pretty intense repairs that some would call quite difficult and best left to those “professionals” with hydraulic lifts, impact drivers etc in the confines of an apartment complex covered parking space with cars parked on both sides of me using jack stands and standard hand tools. It’s all about doing your research and above all having PATIENCE, don’t rush!

The reason why the aluminum bolt snaped during installation is because you forgot to clean the threaded holes with a thread chaser. As you saw, the new bolts come with a white thread locker and that stuff will stay in the holes after you remove the screws. Hope this tip helps.

This is an excellent guide for this repair. Great job. On one hand I always feel really bad for you guys with the E90's and E60's because the cowling, intake box, wiring harness, and radiator coverings need to be removed for almost every job you do. As an E86 Z4 owner, I don't have to deal with any of that. But on the other hand, the E86 (and E85) Z4 is a random assembly of parts from BMW's leftovers bin. It's a combination of E46, E90, X3, etc..... There is a sprinkling of bespoke parts as well so when looking up info on the car, I have to cross-reference several chassis and two generations of BMW's to find what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your advice! I finally did my oil pan after putting if off for a year, has been seeping and finally oil change time had come and decided to just do it. I've done the VCG and a few other things guibos, rsfbs,shocks/springs, I wouldn't want to do this as my first diy but, this went pretty smoothly easier than VCG but more time consuming. I didn't completely drop the subframe, left the control arms on, just removed the sway-bay completely and disconnect the tie-rod at wheel on the pans high side, had plenty of room to get the pan out. took me 12hours took it slow and steady. I torqued all the pan bolts by feel, like I did with the VCG I have the same wrench as you and snapped a couple of bolts when I did my VCG. The old oil pan bolts had a couple of missing heads at the front luckily so i could get a drill/extractor to them and extracted them out easily replaced motor mounts at the same time.

I’m also on urge to do my oil pan gasket looking to see ways without dropping my entire subframe…..

@@ceondecember4995 yes it's not necessary at all, but of course easier if you do completely drop the subframe less fiddly when doing the bolts up. Put it this way, even partially dropping the subframe it's 100x easier getting the oil pan in & out than the valve cover.

I took my 2007 BMW 335i (n54 engine) with 45,000 miles on the odometer to the dealer for a checkup. The service advisor said the oil pan gasket is leaking, needs $1000 to fix it. I was like "what???" Thanks for sharing your video. I have to say those torque wrench from HF are not calibrated correctly. I had the same issue where I broke a bolt while waiting to hear the click. I got a Neiko from Amazon, compared to the Pitsburg and Schwaben the Pitsburg's calibration was way off! quality does matter, but 6-7 lbs is common on oil pans and valve cover bolts. You can hand tighten if you've done a few and know what 7 ft lbs feel like. If not, get a good quality torque wrench if you must torque to specs!

Oil pan bolts on another video were done to 8nm plus 90° and he didn't break any, so that seems to be the answer there. Hopefully when I do it it's not too different on a right hand drive car, as all the videos I found were European or USA 🤞 Well done on a great video 👏 👍

Sorry if this was said before, but I'm pretty sure the steering rack torques to 56Nm + 90 degrees. Also, if you are reusing the aluminum oil pan bolts, they will most likely snap if you try to go by the specs. I would just hand tight them by the feel, but you do have to follow the crisscross pattern.

I just did the valve cover gasket on a 330 (aluminum bolts) and they were 10nm + 90°. I used the same HF 1/4 torque wrench and didn't break any bolts, but I sure felt like I was going to. EDIT Yes, I was way off with my typing. I've read anywhere between 8 and 10 nm is correct. They WILL break easily.

Awesome video and details! I do have a comment about the aluminum bolts. I share your fears about overtorquing these and twisting one off that in turn is a bear to extract. For my N52 valve cover gasket job, I had an inch pound torque wrench but was still leery of having a bolt twist off. Rather than just feel for how tight it is getting, you can slowly increase the inch pounds setting and progressively tighten all the bolts to incrementally higher settings. My bolts were spec'd at 78 inch pounds, and at 55 inch pounds I felt that one took a little longer to click than the rest -- so I was done torquing! I also marked all the bolts directionally and recorded the torque setting used. So if I see any coming loose or areas of the valve cover gasket begin to leak, I can proceed from there. Even at 55 inch pounds, those skinny little aluminum bolts are on pretty darn tight! And now I know just how much pressure successfully applied. Oh and still curious about that tow hook. I thought about buying one and grinding the shoulder down, but haven't gotten that far yet. I saw a video where a guy just had a bolt with an open hook on the end, so I presume I could just buy something like that...if I could find it!!! LOL

@EvergreenBuildsDIY
@EvergreenBuildsDIY 4 года назад
The AWD models will have most of the same steps. The main difference is the AWD has a front differential that can deliver power to the front wheels. The front differential, since it is in line with your front axle, it may be in the way to getting access to the oil pan. I would jack your e90 up and go underneath and see if you can identify the front diff and if it's in the way of your oil pan.

I did exactly this, replaced the entire strut assemblies, all controls arms, the tie rods, CV axles, hubs, bearings, motor mounts, water pump, t-stat, cooling hoses. I went all in. What's the step beyond being married to the car? Yeah, that's me. ;)
