Two days a proper test of BMW R 1250 GS.
The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures.com/online-cou...
After I spent two days and more than 600km on the bike I believe that now I can share my opinion about the model. It is the top of the BMW brand and I think that in many ways it deserves the crown. New engine, 1254cc 134 H. P, a little polished design, but noticeable different behavior on and off-road. My conclusion is that this is one wonderful motorcycle and I am sure that many will have great time riding it. I personally prefer 600-700cc range, simple and lighter bikes. The video become to long, but I believe that we provided a lot of useful information for future buyers.
Special thanks to Lyndon from Toro Adventure to provided the bike and helped me to film the video.
If you go to ride there and don't like it I will refund everything you paid, honestly! That convinced I am. Feel free to contact them anytime. I do not earn any money if you book a tour, but I am absolutely sure that you will miss a lot if you don't!

I have recently bought the 1250GS and I can honestly state that it is the best machine I have ever owned. Mine is the lowered chassis model in deference to my height. I feel that it will be an excellent bike for touring with my wife (she is pleased with the passenger comfort); we are mostly on paved roads but sometimes need to also ride on dirt roads to reach our destinations. I am very impressed with the power and easy handling. Although the initial expense is HIGH I think that this bike will be with us for a lot of miles and years.

For a Tenere rider that`s an AMAZING review Pavlin, well done!! For me, by far the best one of all I`ve watched about this bike! Simple, detailed and down to its capability and purpose. Like one viewer below said it`s really "Horses for Courses". Well done also to Lyndon for his sincere opinion, including the minors, for a GS owner you don`t normally see that in RU-vid. Thank you both and safe ride!!

Those bike, as you have stated, are top class machines by any standard, but also not for me because of similar reasons. I.E. if you are an adventure biker who needs a new adventure bike and you have 23000euro... then you can : 1. buy a tenere 700 for 10.000euro or a vstrom 650 etc... 2. use the rest 13.000eyros travelling , meeting new people and exploring new places . Motorcycles are a way to travel and experience "adventure" not the 'adventure'' itself. Nice review!

Amazing review man! Very honest opinion and conclusion. Pavlin = 🥇! I had 2014. gs1200, amazing bike. Everything was like you described about 1250. Just some problem with the clutch (time to time very hardly going from 2nd to 3rd gear). After this bike I bought africa twin crf1000. Have to say that I have much more smile on africa then on gs1200. Why? Africa is better for city commuting, off road and it’s much cheaper BMW? The great bike. You need really much $$$ for everything. Much better than Africa Twin if you ride it with passenger. If you ride it solo, the both bike have the same cruising speed (on highway 140-160kph). My opinion: if you have so much money, buy gs! If you don’t have (generally) enough - by rest! As you said - 600/700cc more than enough for the fun and RtW! Cheers 😎 For sure

I'm lucky enough to have bought a new 1250 GS Exclusive recently having the mindset that if I was to buy a "one bike fits all' for my future needs then this would be the one. I have to say that I am hugely impressed with all aspects of this bike. The ease of handling and maneuverability is excellent and can be best appreciated if you spend time practising low speed riding techniques until confidence in handling is achieved. On returning to riding a large capacity bike after many years away from motorcycling I found the bike quite daunting at first as its phsically a BIG bike but as the months have past I've grown to love the bike and all it does safety wise to help me ride enjoyably. I agree that perhaps a mid sized adventure bike is more suited to off road adventures if you don't have a buddy to help haul the bike up when you've laid it down but it really is 'Horses for Courses' and this bike does everything and really well once confidence is gained in its abilities The guy (Lyndon) at Torro Adventures said it all and very honestly too about BMW build and reliability. Seven bikes being rented out daily to guys of varying abilities and desires to push the capabilities in harsh terrain! A huge endorsement there then for the BMW brand. The BMW company should be sponsoring him as his views and personal experience of the brand does much to help viewers decide where to lay the money when it comes to buying the best 'All Rounder' Nice video and well put together!

Great video! I’m glad to see that the bike handles those smooth gravel roads easily with the stock tires. I’m looking at buying either a GS1250A or Super Tenere and I have been worried about the capabilities of these larger adventure bikes on some of the tougher gravel roads I travel regularly. I do a lot of off road traveling on an old KLR-650 and take it on some pretty narrow single tracks but want something more comfortable on the road for longer distances. I have a lot of experience with dirt riding and less road riding experience. Never been a street bike guy but I do love these what these big adventure bikes have to offer!

@inspectorchicken
@inspectorchicken 4 года назад
@@bseidem5112 seems a bit high, even 11% for Yamaha seems high. I wonder what Consumer Reports definition of "failure" is. I never once heard about a newer motorcycle to actually fail (not starting in the morning, or not working while riding). Some stuff always breaks or produces electrical issues, of course. Thing is, with a failing product from a luxury brand, your chances of getting your stuff replaced for free is far more likely than with a cheap one.

Most (not all) people that buy a GS don't go into extreme conditions, they want to explore and go on the occasional forest service or gravel/dirt road. It is a great platform for mixed road riding and off pavement as mentioned above. Not meant to compete with a KTM 790R or a thumper.

Hi, Pavlin, thanks for a video. I own older air cooled r1200gs 2008 adventure for a couple of years, it has 130000km on odometer (mine is 100). I did all maintenance by myself - oil change, valve clearance adjustments and running cost is a bit lower than japanese bikes. Now it starts breaking - drive shaft fell apart on 120k km and front suspension starts leaking. It is a good reliability considering that I ride it on bad Russian roads. After riding BMW GS I don't want to buy any other bike :) - recently bought almost new spare engine with gearbox for about 1500 euros and plan to ride it as long as I can. Interestingly, when trying older R1100gs I noticed no difference in handling (except of a double price). When driveshaft broke I just bout another one for 200euros and changed it on a farm with mu uncle by using standard tools - no problems with maintenance at all. So if you have a garage don't hesitate to buy one :)

A great review indeed Pavlin. We all noticed you hadn't any luggage nor even empty panniers on the bike, so we can easily imagine your feedback would be still worse about the weight of the machine. Yes the look of this GS HP is incredible, but the GIVI top case base plate is the ugliest thing to install on it. Once more I will tell me my deepest wish. When BMW will understand their best commercial choice would be to sell a R 600 GS? We all dream of a more accessible adventure bike. The highest challenge for BMW would be the produce the most reliable GS ever, with less electronic or bomb proof electronic, 60 hp liquid cooled flat-twin, 6 m/kg torque, weight under 200 kg and half the price of the R1250 GS. If 30 years ago they could get 50 hp from a 800 cc engine in a 186 kg machine let see what they can do now! I am quiet sure you will love it too. Imagine this 600 GS with your 19 kg soft luggage ready for your adventures at only 205 kg ! Please BMW, make this true "Spirit of GS" bike come back soon. Put in your mind that most of BMW lovers dislike your chinese parallel twins with chain.

It’s been said many times before... if we all liked the same things life would be extremely dull. The other thing to consider, as in all subjects, it’s also about what works best for you as an individual, as well as horses for courses. For over 35 years I rode nothing but radical sports bikes and have been lucky enough to have owned a string of the latest and greatest. I’m now on my 2nd GSA (current one is a 2018 triple black). Yep, totally different to anything else I’ve ever owned and I could’ve bought any of the other manufacturers equivalents. Or, I could’ve bought a sports tourer! I chose something that would allow me to experience motorcycling from the other end of the spectrum, as I’ve done all the other stuff, including racing and track day instructor. It’s like comparing a speed boat to a day cruiser, but having said that the GSA is far more competent than it looks. So far I’m enjoying it and it’s novel being able to carry luggage. If I get bored I’ll change it for something else. Whatever you ride, I’m sure you chose carefully... Panigale, DR-Z 400, or K1600. Enjoy 👍

Nice video! About the rear brake pedal: if you ride the GS not too fast and use the “front” brake, it actually starts with braking wit the back brake. Only when you squeeze it hard, the front brakes comes in. That’s also why the rear pads on the GS wear way faster than the front ones. Even when riding off road, I hardly ever use the foot lever because of that. But I agree, when you do, it is a bit far down.

Motorcycle Adventures Don’t worry, I have been riding 30 years and have only gone down once in the Dolomites in the rain. I ride GSA’s since 2007 and ride about 50 k km per year. I just traded my 2017 with 75 k km on it for the 2019. This year alone I was 4 k km off road with the big beast. Of course it’s good to use the rear brake, but what I was trying to say, is that even if u use the “front” brake, you are actually using the rear most of the time...

TIRED FROM THIS BAD (LIGHT BUILD)KWALITY really i had a r 1100 gs and i was lucky that i didn't sold hem and actually i came back last week from a 6 MONTHS silk road tour from 31000 km with my old one without broken rims ore suspension . i can confirm you this is a street bike and not a adventure bike . its crap unsuitable for adventure riding.

We have the exact same 3 reasons not to get the bike. I have to admit, yes I can afford it but just because it is there does not mean that I have to buy it. I have not encountered a GS bike that is lightweight which is why this thing will bury itself in deep muddy conditions and can barely get out even with traction control, etc. I'd opt for a bike half its price like the lighter Africa Twin series and save the money for the budget for touring trips which is more important anyway. Another great review from an actual rider! More Power to you Pavlin!

Glad to see, you finally felt in love with BMW GS, after all that blaming in the past Pavlin 👍👍👍 Good luck, ride save, and don’t forgett, „weight always matters“, that‘s why RE Himalayan is such a great bike too 😁😇 But even as a owner of the above mentioned bikes, I have to admit, the new 2020 Honda AT is a great bike too 😁 (I am a really big fan of DCT, because as you know, I like to ride 500 km onwards per day, day by day, even on a 20.000 km trip 💫) P.S. Pavlin, sorry for bothering you again, if you still mind you can’t lift a dropped GS with ease, please consider to join a BMW off road training, in Spain or Hechlingen in Germany, you will be very surprised how easy it is to lift a GS with the right technic 🍀

Most of the videos someone can see about lifting a GS include dropped GS at flat terrain with good traction ...for example when you try to lift a dropped bike with the weels pointing at the sky in a steep hill then weight is a major issue !

I bought the 1250 Exclusive eight months ago and find the hight a minor problem (im 5"8' with 29" inside leg) ive made a few adjustments so that i can now get 2/3rds of my foot on the ground and thats good enough. Standard suspention with a comfort seat, very comfortable and easy to flick about when up and running. But i agree it is a heavy beast while standing still. Since ownining it ive taken it to Norway/Arctic Circle/Sweden and Spain and it hasnt let me down. This is my first ever GS and i can now see why owners like them so much.

I noticed this GS has Michelin's Anakee Adventure tires which I am thoroughly enjoying on road - so sticky, even in rainy conditions but these are Not so great off-road - fire roads are OK if hard packed and if you pay attention (not that you wouldn't) - Not my favorite tires for off-road but possibly my favorite ADV tires with the occasional lite off-road - with the right tires the GS / GSA are remarkable both on and off-road. The key to off-road riding with the GS is simply standing. On a recent ride a former GS rider, now riding a KTM 790 R, told me that he switched because BMW is so outdated - I had a tough time keeping up with him off-road but he could not even keep me in sight on the twisties though we were running the same Anakee Adventures. On another ride with a seasoned rider, riding an older road racing Ducati, I was able to stay hot on his tail the entire ride on my GSA, with panniers no less… it just handles well beyond what it looks like - my biggest pair of annoyances are weight (600lbs with panniers) and 42mpg - even with 8 gallons, I wish the GSA had a 7th gear, 50+mpg and about 100lbs lighter. Irregardless, I’ll likely always have a GSA but I might add to my harem a T7 or a 790 AR to more thoroughly spank the trails a bit harder… In any case, thanks so much for all you do and special thanks to Toro Adventures!

I have owned 4 boxer GS’s and ridden mostly dirt for over 40 years. However these bikes are the best 2 up dirt tourers ever made and very capable in the hands of a good rider.

I’m on a new Tiger 900 but am thinking about the GSA because the Triumph is great offroad but sucks when distance touring. I usually ride an hour to where there are loads of dirt roads in middle Tennessee, some are pretty gnarled with lots of mud, loose rocks, and oodles of stream and creek crossings. I’m new to ADV riding too, but riding for 15 years. I want to do longer weekend motocamping tours and finding trails I’m not familiar with. Wondering if I should maybe get more experience on the Tiger Rally Peo before moving to the GSA. I’ll just be limited for longer tours. Any thoughts?

you can ride that bike even at 167cm from experience ...it has low center of gravity so it wont tip over easily..but it really doesnt matter even if you are 6'7 its gonna be very hard to catch a 250kg bike once it goes past a certain tipping point

Thanks for the video, it was interesting, but I want to ask, taking into account your riding style, as well as where you ride (it's not Africa or the Middle East...) - does the bike need to be 1250, given that the constant low speed you maintain and the fact that you don't really use the engine's capacity?.. I have a BMW 850 GS (2022) and a BMW 750 GS (2019) and they have so much reserve power that I can hardly use it as per road as well as off-road. Does a person need a 1250 cc heavy bike considering you drive at an average of 30-75kph. and about 90 -110 km/h. on intercity roads?
@motorcycleadventures
