Thank you for this Nick, much appreciated as a prospective GS buyer. My brother was a customer of Mike Wheeler’s back in your time there, he never owned a car, rode motorcycles seven days a week from 16 till his seventies clocking up terrific mileages, I remember seeing 114,000 on one of his bikes.

Nice job Nick - very thorough and analytical. I agree 100% on weather protection. We dont get quite so much rain here in Aus but 2 years of 1200GS ownership gives me enough data to allow me to concur. I'm constantly amazed how dry I remain even when not wearing rain gear.

I’mmm, I’ve got a 2015 gstb, two weeks off the end of warranty I had it booked in for free end of check. Well you couldn’t Believe what was to follow. 23 months old !! new gear box, new clutch, rear wheel bearing, new starting motor and handle bar switching all done under warranty, thank god I booked it in, but from that day to this I’ve never heard a word from the dealer or bmw it’s as i the bike never existed. So six years down the line Ive not done a lot of miles 7000 so with the help of your videos I’m doing my own services, lost all convenience in bmw.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 3 года назад
Did they do the work?? That seems a huge amount of things wrong. I have a friend with 110,000 miles and no real issues in all that time. Often the quality of the dealer compliments the bmw brand. So far my dealer has been great although we have had some issues for sure, but nothing like that list!

Nick, I'm still catching up on your videos - completely out of sequence but no matter. GSA still planned for March New year (2023) - Triple Black, Factory Lowered - I won't be 'off roading' as such and want to be able to plant both feet on the ground and be confident when riding with wife as pillion. Put together list of 'Accessories' to be purchased - Birthday / Christmas presents (Family notified), so just to say 'Thank You' for your commentary, views, and giving my wife and I the pleasure to watch.

Hi Martin. I love the triple black colourway. I loved my Kalamata GSA but the triple black was the only one I’d have swap it for. Just a note with the lowered bike having seen you comment on the Wunderlich toolbox. Be aware that may not be suitable for the lowered bike as I know in extreme circumstances off-road it can contact the splash guard. Since the video they are now marking it with a warning 👍🏻 you’re in for a treat with the GS though. Enjoy

Enjoyed the video. Was surfing RU-vid looking for bikes like yours . Been riding a VStrom for the last 7 years and really love it . It’s been great to me . Only tires ,service,and a stator have needed to b done on it . I am going to go look and ride a bike like yours I’m certain I’ll love it and trade my VStrom in for it . I never go off road except on actual dirt bikes for fun but have no intent on taking a heavy bike off road so a bike like yours vs GSA is I think perfect for me. Videos like yours have been very helpful in clarifying my decision. Keep up the good work

Thanks Mark. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either a GS or a GSA. Many are critical of them, but that's often the case when something is extremely good. It has it's faults for sure and stuff that frustrates, but overall it's a superb vehicle and sales every year show that. Ride safe

On my third GS LC, a GSA 1250 Exclusive, agree with your comments. Screen issues solved by fitting a Puig Touring, always fit a MudSling and a Denali horn. Got the Givi tank bag too, love it as it’s not too big. Otherwise a superb all rounder and by far the best bike I’ve ever owned for UK and European riding...here in Northumberland a very popular bike.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Chukky aka Ian thanks for commenting Ian. I’ve looked at screens now and thinking of either the MRA vario or Puig. Think if I fit risers (which I hope may fix ‘slouching’), then I sense I may need it. Ride safe
@IanTed
@IanTed 4 года назад
Nick Hodge I fitted Rox risers which bring back the bars, I’m only 5’9” with spine issues so these have made a big difference. Luggage wise I use Bumot panniers and top box fitted straight to the OEM racks, much better than the OEM panniers. I used Varios on my standard GSs, good but too small for touring...

Thanks for a very interesting and thorough review, Nick. My own ownership experience (7k miles since June 2019 on a 1250GS TE Exclusive) echoes most of what you have said, although so far, I am still running the original tyres (Anakee Adventure) and have not yet had the second service. My bike has had two issues - an error message which resulted in the dealer changing the fuel pump, although no fault was apparent while riding the bike - and a faulty Nav VI which was swapped without any problem. I have the "comfort seat" as it was already on the bike. It's very comfortable but I can't really say whether or not it's more comfortable than standard.... I have also swapped the screen on my bike to an MRA Vario screen. When I first got the bike I ran it with the seat in low/low setting and the screen was fine. After a long stint I found my legs aching a bit so I lifted the seat to high/high which gives a little more room between hips and knees. This solved the leg issue but meant that the screen was directing slightly turbulent air to the top of my helmet. The MRA screen has solved that and I think it looks fine on the bike. I also added some Givi hand protector extensions for a little more weather protection. Here's my bike - as of yesterday in the Peak District - i.postimg.cc/LstgYqM9/IMG-5356.jpg I'm now thinking of adding the Denali lights/horn/cansmart as my next project. Thanks again for the video.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Richard, wow, thanks for the great feedback. I will look at the screen for sure. One thing I may do on long multi-day rides is alter the seat occasionally as that may help comfort still further. although i do find myself rolling into the tank with low front, high rear. I too will look at slightly larger hand protection and my friend has the givi ones I think. Don't think you will regret the Denali upgrade, your wallet however will. Ride safe

Richard D Hi Richard and Nick, many thanks for the video and the comments. I totally agree with Richard regarding the MRA Vario screen; I put it on a GS that I had over three years ago and transferred it to a GSA and onto my 1250 GSA HP that I’ve just purchased. It’s a brilliant bit of kit allowing me to ride with visor up in the summer. I also have the Givi hand guard extenders that again are worth having. I’ve just fitted an HP engraved headlight protector for £19 that also looks very good and could potentially save a lot of money. Ride safe gents. Cheers, Andy

Thanks for the great review. Torn between the GS and Tiger 1200 XRT. XRT currently has free luggage/bags/fender extender/ headlight cover and lower crash bars as a promo which is grat value. Looks like they are going to change the model! Missing from GS in my opinion are backlit switches and heated seats which are standard on the Tiger. I just love the look of the 1250 exclusive so the heart may win over the head! Thanks for posting
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Bri I’m biased of course, but there’s a reason the GS wins certainly European sales each year by a mile. I’m a gadget man so get the illuminated switches, but honestly I never really look at the switches. It’s a ‘muscle memory’ thing. Heated seat? I’m a warm soul and rarely use the heated grips and heated seats in the car make me feel slightly weird! My mate Sean however, seems to have heated grips on at 30 degrees!!! You must make your mind up and I’ve never ridden the Tiger but you’ll love the GS

Hi Nick enjoyed the video, I too have a 1250 GS Exclusive version, and I have to agree totally with your version of the pro's and cons of ownership, however, I really love this bike!! I did order mine with comfort seats and find them very good and when ordered as a factory option are a reasonable price. I have changed the screen on mine to a Puig touring screen, the difference was amazing and increased my pleasure in riding this bike probably the best accessory I put on mine!! I also agree totally about the inner bags. Love the detail on the running costs, it's surprising how it all mounts up.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Thanks for the comments Peter, I will take a look at the screen. I'm only annoyed at the comfort seat truly as I would then be 'fully loaded'. You may have heard me hint at the 25mm risers for the handlebars. I find myself 'stooping' over on long rides and have to tell myself to SIT UP! I think if that works out, at 6ft 1in, the screen will become even more relevant. Ride safe

What a professional, well planned, well thought through and well executed review of the R1250GS TE. It's a few years old now, but perfect for me as I've just bought my first GS, a 2019 R1250GS TE in cosmic blue with 24k miles on the clock. If you still own your GS as reviewed, I'd be very interested to get your updated thoughts. Thank you for your quality material.

No worries. Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve not got it still and have been through an adventure and now a K1600. I would highly recommend any of the GS’s. For me I preferred the GSA but that was personal around further road presence, top loading panniers and carrying half of Saudis Arabia’s petrol production on board. Granted it was heavier but for my use perfect. 👍🏻

@benenden360 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your reply Nick. Much appreciated. A mate of mine has bought the GSA, I bought the GS TE, but it's been kitted out with pretty much what you get on the Adventure with the crash bars and panniers. So it too has a lot of road presence. We're planning a road trip from the south of England into northern Spain to ride the Pyrenees in the Spring. We think we've invested in good tools for the job 👍

Hi NickI would totally concur with most of what you said and an excellent review. On the mudsling the last bit of that word "sling" is the most apt as in sling it in the bin a totally useless product. I had one on my current 2018 GS Rallye my wife still got covered in crud and when I looked closer it was rubbing on the swing arm especially when in road mode. I bought a hugger for £29 from China and works a treat and my wife has been kept clean no matter what the weather.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
RMG that’s interesting. I find it still splashed around but my biggest fear was the shock absorber which is an expensive bit of kit not accustomed to crud. I am going to look at a hugger for sure though as actually, whatever else they look quite good

Hello Nick, well here I am 11 months after my initial comment and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a GS 1250. I'm still on the fence on the GS or GSA, but I got a few more months...well hopefully after COVID since I have to fly in to Germany to pick it up.. Thanks Nick. Very comprehensive video. It’s gives an excellent overview of the true cost. These are not cheap bikes and it is not a cheap hobby at this level, but the bikes are so great you find the cash somehow. For completeness, depreciation is a factor, but, in my experience, these bike fare very well in the longer term; however with the high price from new, the early hit is high. I have a 2012 R1200GS Rallye, last of the oil cooled bikes, that I have have had for 5 years. I am very tempted by the new one, but fond of the old one. The older bike suffers very little depreciation, but the new one is just so much better you start thinking “what the heck”. Thanks also for calling out the accessories. Of all of those things, the engine bars are totally essential and the panniers bags too. There are a number of alternative manufacturers of the panniers bags and the price can be a bit lower. All good stuff. Thanks.

I agree about the additional items that should be included at no extra cost, I would add to the list, heated seat, electric screen, illuminated switch gear and tilting tft screen. BMW must make a fortune on these bikes, not to mention the requirement to have £1m show rooms which we pay for in the long run.

Hi Nick:Thx for the info. In a review however I would expect a bit more about handling, engine (camshifting?), suspension,corneringABS,throttle and how they are linked, quickshifter instead of side issues.Maybe a good idea to put that in the title: like"Review r1250gs accesoires" PS:Always on guard if crossing other bikes, if they don`t use the opposite (my) lane cornering, like the drivers in this video @11:07.(not talking about your passing manouver). Even if there is nothing in sight, it`s a very bad habbit .At these very moderate speeds and wide corners , there was no need at all, it actually never is. But as a accesoires review interesting, grtz and have a fun ride.

Thanks for the comments and critique Tony. The shots and specifically the one you refer to was on our 2019 tour to Scotland. The camera is the front mounted INNOVV camera mounted below the front beak. This gives you a very low view of the road ahead. I can assure you we can and could see for a very long way. Equally all of us are connected by intercom. I take your point of course but conditioned allowed some fun and the view was better than perceived from that camera 👍🏻

Love these bikes. Particularly the GS Adventure. It is well known these bikes will be used 80%+ on the super slab. As such, I 100% agree with you on the pitiful horn. This is a safety item and BMW is all about safety. BMW could have easily used the horn off their K1600 series bikes. These are Denali Sound Bomb equals. An electric windscreen would also be a great option. The other elements you mentioned in the fit & fit and finish comments, I would also also concur. Nice work here Mate! The Denalli D4 are a great option, but below the beak they don´t look too great. Try them below on the engine guard. I have mine there, they work as well as on the top and (at least to me) the bike looks prettier. Another idea: try the Denali rear brake lights. These ones do make you stand out for those that come from behind.

I would agree 100% with your comments about a lack of protection on the GS and find it grates a bit to then have to spend hundreds of pounds adding bits on. I've also got Touratech hand guard extensions which help keep your hands warmer and drier plus a crud catcher to stop the bottom of the engine getting plastered. I went down the hexezecan route and have LED auxiliary lights and a mini sound bomb horn (and left the original on so together they are loud enough for me) I'm actually thinking of a 1250 RS at the moment as having had 2 GS TEs now I can't really warrant swapping my 67 plate GS for what is apart from the engine the same bike. I thought your cost breakdown was very extensive...just don't show your wife and even more important don't include depreciation as that's a real eye watering figure. When your insurance is due check out thebikeinsurer website as I've both got my insurance through them and used the renewal quote to beat my existing insurer down too. Great video by the way😉

Nice detailed video and I have to agree with most of what you say. I've had my 1250 Exclusive since Feb 2019 (my first ever GS) and its done about 10000 + having been to Sweden/Norway and recently Spain. I've done a wrap on the panniers and top box just to give them the same colour scheme as the bike, and for a bit more scratch protection. Like you I've paid out for a lot of extras. Regarding weather protection, i find it very good with the standard screen (I'm 5' 7") in the high position. Not as fully protective as my old RT which kept me 90% dry even in heavy rain. Re the rear tyre, mines on 10000 miles from new and still have lots of tread on it (Bridgestone A41) which i find amazing. Front tyre changed at 8000.

He also said that the new motor has viewer issius than the first ones from the 1200LC had, only one software update was releast. Did you hear about that „noise problem“ ? Mykyta Bieliakov Hi Mykyta. Maybe I will do a video but for the time being the only downside I see with them are the silver bits are only decoration and easily scratched but I guess that’s luggage. The top box, when expanded will take my full-face helmet and a pannier, expanded will take a pillion one. In fact if you ride out empty you can probably fit most of two people’s riding gear in. They are water-tight so far and easy to remove and replace (once you have the hang) are keyed alike using the bike key. All in all expensive, but worth the money I believe. Aesthetically I prefer the aluminium boxes fitted to most GSAs but they do not have the expand/contract feature of the varios so are full-size at all times. The top box has a great pad for passenger comfort and other than mounting, dismounting maybe they have no affect on a pillion. Hope that helps. Ride safe

Hi Nick, thank you for another cool video. Nice to find about your background! - On changes on the drivers behaviour, a much bigger problem is people using cell-phones while driving. - I did notice from the traveling footage, you don't always wave at other motorcyclists? GS bikers... :P - About your speeding ticket, you were overtaking a vehicle. I would argue that while overtaking a vehicle, you should use the full power of your own vehicle, to perform the maneuver in the shortest time possible, thus safest way possible for everybody. If you are to overtake a vehicle running 5 mph under speed limit, overtaking just under the speed limit will be dangerous. -Have you had a chance to review your transmission arm inside the rubber covers? I hear many get water inside, and then it really rusts everything in it. Not sure if this still happens on the 1250, it did happen frequently to the 1200s - some drill a drain hole to empty it. P.S. I still wish motorcycles were this "cheap" in Denmark ^_^ Cheers!

Daniel Lopes Hi Daniel. Thanks for the comments. We generally nod here in the UK or stick our right leg out, so it’s not a GS rider thing. I even find myself doing it in the car!! You see with us driving in the left it would naturally be your right (throttle) hand and that would decelerate the bike quickly. Also, when you are filming and there are many bike the constant tipping in the footage is distracting but I definitely do try. My issue with the speeding ticket is police set up where really you do not expect the speed limit to be as it is. That road is dead straight, out of the village, no entrances and on a down slope, but hey. I broke the law. No real excuse. I will check out the transmission arm. Thanks for the heads-up. After my 2,100 mile Scottish trip I was glad of the shaft. Two were on sports bikes and it was a daily, dirty job to oil the chain. Not for me. Ride safe

Like your video... The trouble with BMW is their cost cutting is blatantly unethical. I have owned 4 BMW 3 series coupes and now a 440i and upon taking delivery of the 440 I felt super cheated and decieved. So that is why in principle I will avoid BMW as much as possible. Back to your bike; I can see how they cut cost by omitting certain necessary accessories to either cut cost or insure your return for expensive service. Do they make it impossible for the owner to do their own service? This could be a great deal of savings, not to mention satisfaction, to service it yourself. I am afraid I no longer trust BMWs, or for that matter European bikes and cars. For me it is Kawasaki for now...

M Aldridge thanks for the comments. I fear servicing is beyond most home mechanics on anything now as there are so many electronics requiring expensive equipment. I shall certainly do more maintenance when out of warranty. As you will see from the video, we were mechanics in 70’s and 80’s. diagnosing and repairing by experience. For sure now most are only fitters. Fitting what the diagnostic equipment tells them needs to. In defence however, stuff is generally infinitely more reliable

My riding partner no longer rides with me and I find that I am looking for a lighter bike that is easier to maneuver and one that I can ride more of the gravel roads here in Colorado (USA) without the huge weight issue with the Goldwing. Your video is helpful, thank you. I have ridden Goldwings since 1980. Any comments you may have would be appreciated or anyone else who might have made this kind of change in bikes.

Don Riedel hi Don, welcome along. I can see that the ‘wing’ is probably now overkill for you and certainly not dirt track suitable. I would say the 1250RT is not really either. The GS or GSA certainly. If you re looking for a ‘road’ replacement for the Wing I’m sure you’d be happy with the RT. If you want the ability to do some dirt roads too. Then I’d go for the GS. In fact probably the GSA which has the larger tank and in that maybe 80 miles more range??

Very interesting and educational video. I think you missed a major cost of owning a new motorcycle... Namely Depreciation!

Any vehicle is going to depreciate unless two worlds align. You keep it long enough AND it’s a bike anyone desires. I guess I probably lost £4k in that first year??? My mate for example though paid £13k for his Rocket 11 years ago. It sits in his shed at £6k today so £7k in 11 years ain’t so bad, so I guess it levels?? Great comment though

Great down to earth vids , Nick Can you please assist me. I have just got a new gs1250 rallye 2022 , my first new bike after 40 years riding . I find what i can describe as a real howling of noise coming from the bike. I cant be sure where from. It really is annoying , ruining my ride. I have goggled hundreds of times and other owners make so many ( unproven ) suggestions, like tyres, screens, the front beak. Can you help. My tyres are bridgestone. Others blamed Michelin tyres. This is to date ruining my only new bike experience so far. Any known real fix Nick

Hi David. I’m not really sure. Certainly tyres can make a difference but two of my GS’s had Battlax tyres and I changed one to continental without discernible difference. Maybe ask your dealer if you can borrow a GSA screen. That’s bigger and see if it makes a difference. Have you had a GS before?? Is it different to that?? They’re not the quietest for sure. Ask to try another GS too and compare. Without doubt if it’s spoiling your ride I’d be surprised if there’s not an issue with that bike as most would say they’re hard to beat. Good luck in your quest 👍🏻

You failed to mention the 4k depreciation, you need to add that into the total. Makes it closer to £1 per mile. I thought these GSs were cheap as you see so many, but they have a poor residual so they are a good second hand buy, provided they have sorted all the issues they had a few years back with can bus failures ect, diff leaks, gearbox problems and cooling impellers dropping off. I presume as a mechanic you knew the risks of buying a BMW? I guess that's why they don't hold their money and theres so many used ones for sale with low miliage.

Anthony Price morning Anthony. Not a fan I see. That too is fine of course. Luckily I’ve had few of those problem in my 1st year. Depreciation however is a necessary evil with pretty much every mode of transport unless you fall on a classic or hold them long enough to become one. Who’d have thought my 1976 £425 RD400 would now be worth £15,000. I guess few buy motorcycles as an investment?

@@nickhodgeUK Well said Nick....If you're going to stress about the cost of depreciation on every bike, car, washing machine, audio system you buy from new then I guess you're better off hanging around 'Bargain Corner" outlets in the hope you'll pick up a quality cast off. Personally I'm fairly sure I only have one life and as short as it is I'm trying to Max out on it. That means buying my dream bike and having my cake when I can eat it! My Exclusive is sat there now in the garage depreciating like hell but just looking at it makes me grin as it brings so much pleasure to me, wheels rolling or not! Btw....I have the MRA Vario Screen and its transformed the ride comfort. I'm just under 6ft and can easily ride at 50 visor up (with shades) with zero buffetting. Nice concise video again with honest opinions..

Pete Hudson thanks for your opinion and comment Pete. I look at it the same with bikes. With cars, I’ve had some nice ones but currently have a modest VW Golf. To me a car is now a ‘rental’. Like Sky TV

Nick, I too have an R1250 GS TE and a Givi tank bag. Do you find that the bag blocks your view of the TFT screen?

@@leonardmcneill7594 sorry Leonard. I thought you meant the Givi bag in one of my other videos. I found this one great. It’s a ‘day’ bag. Holds everything I need to hand. Sunglasses, power packs, GoPro batteries, wallet, phone, visor cleaner, cloth, masks, hand gel and just clips on an off when I get off for coffee or to fill tank 👍🏻
