This is a great video series. I have a 2011 R1200GS and having your videos is like I have a mechanic working beside me. I took the bike to a BMW garage for the first service after I purchased it (I'm the second owner). I have no reason to doubt his mechanic's competence, but he did not provide any documentation on the work he performed. Said the BMW recommended maintenance was performed. I trust it was based on the $ charged. Watching your videos has done two things. First, it does give me a better understanding of the time needed to perform the tasks properly and justifies some true labor cost. Second, it gives me confidence to do this work myself. With your videos I can trust that I am doing it properly.

I did this yesterday. Third time I've checked the clesrances on my GS, but the first time the shims have needed attention. Two were tight. One could be fixed by swapping shims with another valve that had more than enough clearance, but the other needed a new shim. When you start dealing with shims, it'll save you time and heartache to use good measuring tools. Use a good micrometer, keep it in its case when you're not using it, and keep it calibrated. 👍

Great video that puts the theory into reality. One issue I have (And you made it look easy) is the removal of the inlet valve follower and semi - sphere shim. I am worried that the semi-sphere (Shim) will fall out of the follower and fall back into the engine during removal or re-fitting of the follower. Any thought on how to avoid this? It would scare me to death the thought of a part like a shim going 'Walkabouts' inside the engine itself. Exhaust shims are not a problem as they are so much more accessible. Thanks again for a great informative video.

Love your videos; you make up names for parts and procedures like I do! Question on your valve clearance calculation; since the clearance range on the valve you adjusted was.010mm, the center of the range between .013 and .023 would be .018; and since the clearance will become smaller over time as the valve and seat wears; if you are going to "cheat it" wouldn't you want to make the clearance larger than .018?

Being a mechanic...I still hate shims, too much stuffing around measuring, calculating and them waiting for the new shim parts....there was nothing wrong with the old locknut system....even though sims are supposed to be more reliable and stay within specifications for longer.

They absolute stay in spec much, much longer, but that old way was so much quicker 👊🏻👍🏻😉
