BMW R1250 GS Adventure (2021) 1st service, part 1

Prefer to do all my own servicing work and as this bike is under a 3 year warranty I want to ensure I have a proper record of work completed, as proof should an issue arise. The costs saved will be used to purchase the GS911 wi-fi Hex code reader, more of that later.
AS ALL COUNTRY'S HAVE THEIR OWN RULES, I CANNOT GIVE ADVISE ON WARRANTY WORK IF YOU SERVICE YOUR OWN BIKE. TORQUE SETTINGS ARE AS PER FACTORY. SUMP WOULD BE DRY, NO OIL, SO BEWARE ONCE OIL IS ON THE THREADS. AIR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION.
As with all video's this is just a guide and if you intend to do your own work, you are responsible!

Great video, thanks. Spending time with the bike and doing my own service is therapy. AND, it almost always pays for all the tools you need to do it by the 1st service for sure, unless of course if you already have them. This videos gives people who don't quite have the skill set, knowledge or confidence to do their own. It's a good idea to video the service for proof you did it.

Excellent video. Just got my new 40 year GS and want to learn these types of things. One thing I was glad to see you did was service the drive shaft. I hear they are never well lubed and need this done. I will try to do this myself to ensure there is good lube. Do not want any rust in tis location. Thanks for the torque settings as well. Perfect as I had no idea where to find these.

Thanks for the tip on getting the shaft back into the bevel gears, i spent ages struggling! The final drive filler is actually a T40 and the sump is a T55. On my r1200gs when I first did the rear drive oil change the filler was really tight and I stripped the drive using a hex socket (advice on a different video). Speaking to BMW service tech he told me they are both Torx, not Hex.

Greetings, thank you very much for taking the time to make this super video of the service of your motorcycle, on my motorcycle I have put some magnets on the filter so that the metal also stays there apart from the magnet that it has in the oil screw, a question Without being indiscreet, you can see that your motorcycle is very well cared for, you are no longer obliged to take it to the agency, that the truth, the services of these motorcycles can be made by one much better both in the care and in other things, new super video

Magnets on filter shouldn't be needed, that why it's a filter. Even though mine was new and in break in period, magnet on drain plug was clean.

Not sure if it does or not. If they didn't want you working on your own bike would they give directions in the owners book on how to access the Hex plug or give any form of info on servicing? I lived in states and had warranty claim they settled 6m out of warranty and I did all my own servicing there. I will do my own here but record what I do and keep receipts to prove it was done. If not serviced professionally, too many people just don't bother doing it.

Hi David, searching the web to gain some tips on how to service the rear drive shaft on my BMW GS 1200 2013, I'd like to give you a tip (if I may) on how to make things easier when putting the zip-tie back on the front boot when re-assembling. So before putting the boot back on in its place, first put the zip-tie around the boot loosely where it's supposed to be. So all that needs doing then is tightening it. Hope this is will be of help and may make things easier next time. Ride Save.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I started losing the fear by doing a full service on an old BMW K1200GT 2003. I now feel more confident, the haynes repair manual has all the steps and torque settings. Last week I got a BMW R1200GS 2022. I'm searching for the service/repair manual to get the torque settings and all the steps just as the haynes repair manual for my GT but can't find it anywhere. I love your video, I would think that the torque settings are the same as your motorcycle... If not, could you please tell me how you got them? Are there service manuals yet? I read that BMW is no longer selling them, I found out too late, I already bought the motorcycle (and I'm loving it after just 170km!) but I would like to do the services myself. Here in Mexico they state that if you do the service yourself it will void warranty, they also state that if we dont use the motorcycle for at least 400km a month it will void the warranty. I don't think I will use it that much for the three years, I also use the GT and cars! So for me, the warranty seems to be void already LOL.

It's always best to do your own maintenance...I purchased a dealer maintained 2019 R1250RT from a private party. He always took the bike to the dealer for service. The bike had 6K miles when I purchased it. To get a baseline on the maintenance, I changed the motor oil and final drive oil. As stated in the video the final drive requires 180ml of oil...So I drained the oil into a measuring cup and it had 240ml worth of oil..and this was a dealer maintained motorcycle...sad to say this is not the first time I have found a dealer's workmanship lacking...

@@dannysvendsen2438 180ml is the correct amount, I found 240ml when I drained the fluid. It used to be 200ml but BMW lowered to 180ml to try to solve a series of blown final drive gaskets. I would believe his word when I could see an official bulletin from the Motorrad stating what you were told...And the cool thing about the BMW manual is, it comes on a DVD and it's updated via the Internet.

Nice video 👍normally service my own bikes as well but won't risk it while mine's under warranty most dealers make very little on sales of new bikes and rely on service work to make a profit so can't imagine the conversation when dealers is asked about a warranty issue only to find they've not benefited from your custom ,fingers crossed 😏on an unrelated note do you have the loud tapping noise from left cylinder when engine is hot ?goes away at 2k revs seems pretty common ,I know my 2020 sounds like a diesel when hot !
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel 2 года назад
Nope no noise off mine. I was advised by BMW mechanic in US when I bought my 09 to run them in pretty hard, his thoughts were the engineering is so good now that the only part needing broken in is the piston rings. Ran mine to 60k after using his advice and never used a drop of oil while others complained they had to top up regularly. As I said before BMW warranty is second to none and I do my own servicing because I enjoy it and I have a vested interest to see it done correctly. I can't comment on profit on new bikes, it's not my business but I did enquire from a bike dealer on trade in value of my 3 month old bike and they offered £6k less than I paid so somebody makes profit!

You mentioned your previous 1200, so I assume you learned to do your own maintenance starting with that one? I'm guessing you have a service manual as well, since you know the torque specs, or did you get those specs somewhere else online? How do you know that BMW will honor your maintenance on the bike in regards to the warranty? I'm asking all this because I'd like to do this type of maintenance on my1250 (when I finally get it) since I've been doing most of the maintenance on my GoldWing for the past 20 years. I've never owned a new bike under warranty though.
@TrailBreak-Travel

I had BMW's since 80's. Previous GS IN US was repaired under warranty outside the then 2 year period, when a shock went and I was very impressed with them for that. I have no service manual as yet but will be purchasing the disk available from BMW when it needed as bike ages and the number of items needing attention grows. Torque settings available from several sites.

In the US, a warranty claim can not be refused if you do your own maintenance. No need to take it to the dealer to keep the warranty in affect.
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel 2 года назад
@@hdk6187 I record my services to show they are done! If BMW didn't want you doing your own work, they shouldn't give detailed directions how to hook up scan tool!! I lived in US and never had issues. If they expect to give no cover for own servicing, it should clearly say on the warranty paperwork. Will be returning to US for another Probably. Anyone in the UK looking for a low mileage GS?🤣

@@TrailBreak-Travel We are in agreement, I wanted to clarify for US owners that they can do their own maintenance and not void their warranty. The law is called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act.

First job is warm the engine so the oil drains more efficiently as will removing filler plugs. Doing the wheel nuts up in a circular rather diagonal sequence is just the type of error that feeds into dealers/manufacturers not accepting owner servicing and not honouring warranties. Would also be more complete to show any debris on the drive housing drain plug. that needs cleaning. Did you clean old threadlock off the torque arm bolt and reapplly fresh?
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel Год назад
Fair Comments, most of which I expect people to know already if they are doing this stuff. No debris on this one, was on my UK 21 one which is shown.

Check with ur dealer. In US it is illegal to force you to dealer service to keep warranty. Everyone quotes this but nowhere is it written you have to. Do the work and either record work done or keep receipts to prove it was.

Good day sir, I own a GS 1250 2022. I watched 3 videos on youtube and they all have a different torque for the engine oil drain bolt. You say 20 Nm and the two others say 32 & 42 Nm. What is the correct setting…where can I have the specs from BMW? Thanks, Marc Quebec Canada 🇨🇦😉🏍
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel 11 месяцев назад
I use lower setting as thread on drained sump is oiled. People have said 42 is too much and is for clean dry threads. Shops have seen bolts stripped. I literally squeeze up the crush washer and have never had issues or stripped threads.

I don't think so. I know in US it is illegal to force you to have to service with them. Elsewhere I don't know but video proves correct work was done. I have had nothing but praise to sing with BMW and warranty issues and have always serviced my own.

in my manualit says : Oil drain plug to crankcase M20 x 1.5 42 Nm
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel 2 года назад
General consensus is 42Nm is too high. Here is why Torque specs are for clean, dry threads only, period. Your oil sump threads will never again be clean/dry. A slight snug once oil plug stops moving by hand is more than enough. Step away from the torque wrench. Don't say you haven't been warned.

@@TrailBreak-Travel You don't have to have the first service done at the dealer?
@TrailBreak-Travel
@TrailBreak-Travel 2 года назад
No why? There are no software updates done by the dealer at 600 miles, no rider modes added: these rumors are snake oil, the bike is 100% ready when it leaves the dealer. The dealer 600 mile service won't do the splines all it is is a basic check and an oil change of engine and rear end, to remove the manufacture lubricants. In the US it doesn't affect warranty as long as you can prove work was done and in UK where I was, it didn't affect it as far as I am aware.
@TrailBreak-Travel

As I always say, if you decide to work on your own vehicles, you take the risks. The risks you forget to tighten or torque incorrectly, the risk you use the wrong fluids, the risk you cannot complete the job. Safety should be your number 1 priority, to you, to the public and to your steed. If in doubt don't tinker. I've been working on my own vehicles for 40 Years plus, I purchase the correct equipment, do my own learning, take my time and check twice.
