Is the BMW R1250 RT Triple Black the ultimate touring motorcycle? My first ever ride on the R1250 RT. The police have been using the RT for a long tine now and for good reason. With the same boxer twin engine as in the BMW GS, the RT is purely road focused and is an extremely practical and premium motorcycle.
The perfect bike for mile munching and touring in comfort. With great wind protection and large panniers this would be hard to beat long distance travel on two wheels.

Those who never owned one should go and ride one before making a comment. As someone who owned multiple GSs and GSAs and a K 1600, the RT handles better than all of them on the paved surfaces. Steeper rake and 17" front wheel make it superior to the GS Models. 200 pound lighter weight makes it superior to the K 1600 in slow parking lot maneuvering and service cost. The price in the US is actually cheaper than the GSA because it already comes with the color matching side Bags. The 10" TFT, power screen, power locks, wireless phone charging, active cruise are not even available on the GS Models. The wind protection is so good that on the highway, it is in a different league than the GS Models.Most people buy with their heart more so than the logic, so get what you love most and than be happy. At the end it is a BMW!

I tossed up between the GSA and the RT and I ended going for the RT. It was the weather protection that swung it for me. I commute to London (130 mile (208km) round trip) in all weathers, except snow. There’s actually one problem with the RT and that’s the knee angle. I’m 183cm/6ft with an 83.75cm/33.5in inseam. My bike has the peg lowering kit, and the standard seat of 805/825mm. On 805mm my knees kill after about 30mins. On 825mm, there’s no problem with the knees, but a different problem arises: the lowered pegs touch down at only 37 degrees angle! I ride my bike mostly with only the top box. The bike like that, encourages you to ride it. The lowered pegs don’t. If I’d bought mine new, I’d have bought the high seat. Unfortunately, I bought mine when there was a supply crisis and I had to buy second hand. I’m now thinking the next bike I buy will be the 1300GSA when that’s eventually released because I know the 90 degree knee angle will be more comfortable on my arthritic knees.

Owned one of these since May 2022, can't really comment on your preference for the GS, dealbreaker for me was the GS is much harder to keep clean! I also prefer 17" wheels for sharper steering and better choice of road tyres. Suspect the RT is a better two up machine also, the GF certainly likes the heated pillion seat :) Couple of points to note you missed, the optional top case can also be centrally locked, has high brake light and pillion friendly backrest. Shame you didn't demo the SatNav, once setup (takes a little knowhow) is a fabulous feature and fully integrated to the dash and handlebar wizwheel. The right hand cubby hole is lockable and has a fan cooled wireless charger for your phone (or USB). You didn't test at night but I think you'd enjoy the lights which adjust with lean angle. Keep up the good work.

👍 I can completely get why you would want this over a GS. I personally prefer the adventure vibe, but that is just personal opinion. It really does have everything this bike haha fan cooled wireless charger is a great idea. Many thanks

I can fully attest that you can push it to the absolute limit having ridden them professionally for the mentioned organisation, they keep up and make a mockery of most sports bike riders, and are much better in full tilt through multiple types of bends. They are a solid platform. 👍

@fentontaylor9021
@fentontaylor9021 Год назад
You are so wrong about this bike. You said it handles about the same as a GS, when in fact, it handles completely different and way better than a GS due to its 25.9 fork angle and 4.6" trail. Also, when pushed, this bike is extremely capable of going fast on twisty roads and holds its line similar to a sportbike. You should have put the suspension and the ride mode into "Dynamic" and found some good twisty roads to ride on, then you wouldn't have said it's not a bike you would push on, but it's a mile cruncher.
@redangrevival
@redangrevival Год назад
I personally prefer the handling of the GS! I feel like you need to be pushing harder on the RT to exploit its handling. It just feels a little big for me. I am sure most of it is mental, but still the fact remains±

Another nice review. I sold my R1100RT after I purchased my RE Meteor 350. The RT was becoming to cumbersome in the garage and on the road. The lateral nudge at start up and while accelerating is indeed due to the opposed twin of the boxer. The drive shaft, as mentioned below, has little effect on start up as it does not move. Each piston is 625 CC and when you add in rods bearings etc. that is a lot of mass to be chucking left to right.
@redangrevival
@redangrevival Год назад
Thanks I appreciate it 👍 Yes it is a big bike and I can definitely see the downsides in that! There seems to be mixed opinion from people on the lateral nudge 🤔 Some say it is the shaft drive and some say the engine! To me it feels like the engine on start up, but when under way or acceleration it could be the shaft drive.

Everyone seems to forget about the RS which IS the most involving of the GS, RS and RT to ride. It’s also the quickest of the three. It needs the GS bars or bar risers to make it a more comfortable tourer but does it all better than the other two. Handles the best, it can be pushed on in the bends and is immensely involving and rewarding. Throw in the panniers, satnav cradle relocating bracket the options such as heated grips and a better touring screen and you have one of the best sports touring machines on offer today. If I wanted a pure tourer I’d be looking at the newest and more compact Goldwing I think.

I use my 2023 RT LE as a daily rider, worth noting the radar doesn’t come as part of the LE package it’s an extra from about £500. As I use my bike everyday I have no complaints about it being too warm because I’m in the UK and as you know we get way more days that require the wind protection than days that don’t plus you can get such good jackets now for the summer. I came from a Triumph Tiger and for me it’s a huge upgrade.

Just a small point to clarify. I have owned a 21 RT for 2 years now and pressing the central locking switch on the handlebar doesn't, and never has, applied the steering lock. It only locks / unlocks the storage compartments, panniers and top case (if fitted). 👍 You have to press and hold the ignition switch, with the handlebars turned fully to the left, to apply the steering lock.
@redangrevival

@paulv22

Nice review and I agree on your "too comfortable" point. I also agree on the wind protection being almost too good. I tested one on a warm day and wanted less. I think I'll stick with my RS until I get even older. The reason it rocks is because the engine axis is longitudinal where most bikes are transverse. When you rev it, the engine spins and wants to take the bike with it. Guzzis do the same thing for the same reason.
@redangrevival
@redangrevival Год назад
Thanks, really glad you enjoyed the review 👍 Yes I didn't know it was such a thing but too comfortable and good wind protection "mutes" the riding experience! Ah yes that makes complete sense and is definitely the reason, I get the same feel with the Guzzi's! Cheers

@Fernando90054
@Fernando90054 Год назад
I have one thing to say about this bike. If I could have, one bike only, I think that the RT would be it. Because, it is too much of a bike. You can do almost everything with it. If you go on a solo riding there is practically no place that wouldn’t be advised to go with this motorcycle. On very narrow roads, far from civilization, at night with no proper navigation or with poor navigation instruments, with full luggage and a pillion on the back seat, you naturally ask yourself like the talking heads song “ How the hell I get here?”, and consequently it is not the best environment for this bike. One thing that I think is missing on this bike is a reverse gear. Honda Gold wing has it, and BMW 1600 GTL has it. Why not on the RT? Besides that is is a stunning and capable bike. If with all the comfort there is a chance that you feel getting distracted from the riding, it has a simple solution:- Bringing the windshield down to the lowest position and there you are, back to a normal bike riding sensation, exposed to the elements again. But after all said and done, would I be missing a more nimble and exciting bike experience? Yes, of course I would. Riding a Bike is supposed to be more than driving a Bentley-Bike 😊 Thanks for the video👌🏻

@@redangrevival Yes, I can understand the reluctance. I didn’t felt that with this bike, but it happened with the Honda and with the R18 Transcontinental. We have to identify ourselves with the Ride. By the opposite, I felt immediately identified with the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC, but I pondered that it had very little room for luggage (the left side bag is only a non significant help) and for the cost of it, I decided to wait, but when I tried it for a spin on the road, I immediately felt that it was the right “cocktail” as a bike for me. It was a very competent bike on the road, very pleasant to ride (The engine is fabulous in every sense), hiper beautiful, fast enough to overtake in almost every kind of road with confidence. The sound of the exhaust is very audible for the one who rides, even with silencers, and that’s an extra pleasure for the character of the bike. In summary, a very fun and reliable bike to ride. No wind protection for longer rides, and equivalent limitations concerning fuel autonomy and it is pricy as a top quality machine should be , I’m not complaining about that, but it counts for a buying decision. Ultimately, I got very fond of shaft drive transmission on a bike. It’s a very reassuring feature to have, so in conclusion, I’m enjoying the BMW 1250 RT and it’s very soon to let it go 😊 The boxer engine is super reliable, the electronic windshield is fantastic, the fuel consumption is very reasonable for the type of bike, the general quality is beyond average parameters, the breaks super responsive , the road presence is superb, the boxer engine needs no introduction and I’m very pleased with the look for the type of bike that it is, that new front design won my approval. For now it’s a bike to keep. I’m going to test ride the Multistrada V4, and then I’ll see if is there any tempting possibility for a change, but I’m afraid that the fuel consumption and the limited capacity of the gas tank can be a big con, along with the secondary transmission by chain, 😬but I’ll give it a try.
