BMW RnineT Racer - What Happened?

BMW Motorrad launched the RnineT back in 2013 to celebrate their 90th anniversary. Since then the RnineT model has been rolled out in various guises such as the Pure, Heritage, Scrambler, GS and 40th GS Anniversary, however my personal favourite is the "Racer"
The sad fact is that this stunning BMW RnineT Racer had an extremely short lifespan....... was launched in 2017 and discontinued in 2019.
I take this beauty out for a ride and review and share why its life ended so ubruptly and see for myself if it should have been merited.

Nice review. I own a 2017 model since new, use it for commuting and will never sell it. Found that the handling improved a lot when changing the original Bridgestones T30's for Pirelli Angel GT's. I immediately got the foot pegs and brake pedal touching the ground after the tyre exchange. I resolved this by increasing the preload at the rear and raising the rear 14 mm. Now I have no issues and can keep up easily with super bikes on the "cloverleaf" highway intersections. And a stop at the gas station almost always results in a nice chat about the bike.

Awesome to hear and great that some of us love this bike 👍🏻 future icon due to limited production run of just over 2 years 👌

As a Racer owner since 2018 I enjoyed this review and also your videos of the R1200S and HP2, both of which have better suspension and more power than the Racer. Personally I much prefer the stripped down café racer style of the Racer. BMW seemed to give up very quickly on the Racer, of which 5,027 were made (source Facebook R nineT Racer group) and they should have offered higher bars as at least an option. Some Racer owners who have fitted higher bars themselves also have a higher screen which to me detracts from the smooth lines of the bike. I like the riding position, although for sure you have to build up your stamina for longer runs. I’m not a good enough rider to complain about the forks, a few owners have fitted upside down forks and again I think the bike doesn’t look as good, more modern less retro. Had BMW fitted upside down forks as standard I think they would have lost even more money on each bike because sports riders were never going to buy a bike with “only” 110hp although it’s enough for me. The Racer has more torque than either the R1200S or HP2 which is better for road riding - I like bike engines where the torque in Nm is a bigger number than the horse power which is the case with the R nineT. Here in the UK about 316 Racers were registered, in the equivalent period there were 633 Scramblers, 372 Urban GS’s and 258 Pure’s, so the Racer numbers don’t seem so bad but what they don’t tell you is what discounts dealers had to give to shift their Racers. I know I got mine at a decent price and I’m still very happy with the bike. I’m certainly not banking on the Racer appreciating as I just want to ride it but whilst I’m here I’ll mention another café racer - the Harley-Davidson XLCR of which just over 3,000 were made and was a famous flop. Weirdly it was always my favourite Harley and immaculate examples now go for @ 8 times the original UK price 45 years ago. Subscribed!

I have a 2017 “S” model r NineT Racer with all the options. I absolutely love it once you get to a nice twisty road and start to move your body around as you manoeuvre through the curves. But around town and on straight roads, as you mentioned, the handlebars being at about the same height as your hips and that long reach to them does put a lot of pressure on my shoulders. Once covered 950kms in a day on it…….never again!😂 I don’t ride it often but it’s too gorgeous to sell.

Back in '17 I needed boots. Didn't even know this model existed. Bought the boots. A week later I bought the bike. Fabulous ride.

Nah, no quickshifter and the likes. I like the bike for its simplicity and minimalistic approach to biking! Ok, traction control and ABS (the last one mandatory in the EU), but the rest...no power modes, no anti-wheelhop, no anti-wheelie...just a basic bike. And you need to know how to ride to ride it smoothly, rev-matching and all. As for the agility...try a Moto Guzzi V7III Racer next to this. The Guzzi is darty and nimble, the BMW just wants to stay stable and commit to the chosen line, like some kind of supercharged tram :-)
