currently own a rninet which is aircooled, very nice for afternoon rides. becomes hell once you get stuck in traffic, esp in manila.

I read somewhere that the original BMW boxer started out as an aircraft engine. Did you come across this during the research for this video?

BMW wanted to scrap the boxer in the 80es, (K75, K100..) but customers were to conservative, they still wanted boxers.😢

BMW 's boxer engines are fricking awesome. Loads of character and extreme reliable engine and an absolute joy to ride. You love them or you hate them but if you're one of the lucky ones who fall in love with a BMW boxer it is a love for life. My first ride on a R100RS dates back from 1977 on a bike from the father of a good friend. I wil never forget his words, once you ride one, you wil want to own one. Current bikes are a 2011 R1200R and a 2007 HP2 sport ❤

I took my K1300GT inline 4 cyclinder flying brick into the shop for service and was given a GS as a loaner. It's a nice bike, but when I rolled on the throttle, the entire engine pulled to one side. My K also puts out way more power. I realize that the boxer engine is the bread and butter for BMW, but it's not for me.

Having so much rotational force around the longitudinal axis is bizarre. My first experience with a boxer twin bike was an R18. I’m normally happy to throw bikes around at any speed, but taking a left onto an onramp from a standstill on that was the closest I’ve been to crashing a bike. Got a small roll, tipped it in at very slow speed, went to accelerate hard expecting the bike to want to stand back up only for the rotation forces to instead dip me in further driving the floor boards heavily into the ground. It was exactly opposite to what my brain had been accustomed to. Very unsettling in the moment. I was fine after that and adjusted to it once I knew what to expect but still. I get some imperfections add a charming character but it felt like something that made me have to fundamentally change how I approached low speed riding. Some people love that quirkiness I guess. Just not for me.

The trouble with boxer engines in motorcycles is that since the cylinder heads stick out they are the first part to hit the ground when making a tight corner. So the best design is a sohc, not the more powerful dohc. And the sohc engines are more suited to touring motorcycles where dependability is more important than to squeeze every bit of power from the engine.

Super ,reliable easy to work on bike, mine is a( r60/6) 600 cc -1975, NO in built obsolescence..! In u.k. no, road tax or mot required..(annual safety check) due to 40 years age ,Historic vehicle, classic insurance & licence & your motoring...Vvvvroom..!
