Brilliant straight-up review Minner, am shopping around for a new bike and this has been on the shortlist, you just sold me :)

Great review, I just bought a 2020 after selling a brilliant 2017 Tuono v4. The Tuono was boring unless you were riding very hard all the time. This is more of a do everything like
@MinnerQ

And the tuono was in the running for my next bike. Thanks for that perspective.

Thanks for this good review - lots of common sense and really good perspective. I love the looks of the S1000RR and that with this re-tuned engine (better for road riding) would be perfect!

Hi Minner, I have been enjoying your vlogs. I have had me S1KR since last August and put17,000km (10,500ml) on it without a single issue. It's such a great bike and puts a huge smile across my face just looking at it. I hope you take this in the spirit it's intended. You are upshifting using the clutch all the time, at least in the videos. The method I use is to have my foot with just a slight pressure on the gear shift and then I roll off the throttle just slightly and then pull it up a gear and roll on the throttle again. The roll of the throttle is just enough to take the load of the engine just like interrupting the spark.

+Simon Jones Hi Simon. I'm still staring and smiling at mine too. Thanks for the input. I'm appreciative of any advice from other, likely more experienced, riders. I've upshifted without the clutch on occasion. It seems that most feel this can be done on any motorcycle without obvious early gearbox wear while others are more concerned. RJ had a video on this topic. In my experience it does just slip into gear with light pressure and a closed throttle; however, I did notice it works better at speed. I abandoned it temporarily to allow time to perfect the clutch shifting but I'll be working on this as well.
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
+Boost Item I was playing with the upshift yesterday. It is quite cooperative as it has been in the past. It doesn't have any harsh quality to it that would lead to the perception of excessive friction. I'll try the downshifts as well.

you guys are silly. saying it does not work well at low speeds is just plain wrong. sure it isnt that perfect snap into the next gear that it has at really high speeds but i just rode one and shifted to from 1st to 2nd at 2k rpm, so slow as hell, and it clicked into the next gear faster or just as fast as anyone could change gears normally.

New Sub, saying Thank You for a great review. I am a female rider of 2 years and just purchased this bike 2 days ago. I was in LOVE with my Yamaha FZ-09, but this bike... Wow, it's a whole different story.

Amen Corner RIDER congrats! I never roads the 09. I had an fz07 and loved it. The only problem with this bike is it’s extreme capability. Always begging you to push it harder. You’ll love it on the track - the only place to really push it

brilliant review bro, I'm a brand new rider and wanted your thoughts on moving up to a super sports, how long do you feel one has to have been riding before stepping up to 600 and are these super naked just a super sports with handle bars when it comes to power? anyways be cool and ride safe with greetings from south London UK.

Nice review with regards benefit of exhaust there is the massive weight difference something like 20kg down to 4kg for a full system
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 7 лет назад
Very true and it's enough to possibly feel the difference. Even at the track, I'm in it for the thrill, not the competition. For someone who hates the cat, wants a lot noise and wants to shave tenths off of laps times - it's a must have. If I rode one with an incredible sounding aftermarket exhaust I would probably be singing a different tune.

Minner Q true, it's watching Royal Jordanian S1000 and hearing the pops on the downshifts that make me think it would be worth it. But then again 2k is a sickening amount of money for some extra pops
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 7 лет назад
I agree. One of those things - once you have it you don't want to go back. 2k is ridiculous.

you're killing me here, after watching this I want to run to the dealer, last week he still had a black and white one on the floor, my only thought and maybe because i'm old school, I can't go much more than 3000 on a oil change, i know its synthetic and the intervals they recommend, but its just me, and nice review !
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
+Jim V I tried, I can't go over 3000 either. I have to say the oil still looked pretty fresh at that interval but I'm still going to change it. Worst case scenario: you ride for 1000 miles and realize it wasn't meant to be. It'll be the quickest, yet most exhilarating, $2k you ever lost.

Thanks for the great review. I have a quick question. You mentioned living at a condominium complex. Does that mean you leave her out in the cold?
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
Thanks for taking the time. No, I have a garage. I could never leave a bike out. My drunk father usually sits next to it all night with a bottle of Jack in one hand and his shotgun in the other. Demented? Yes. But he has a purpose.

+Minner Q So it has tons of low end punch and mid range power, is it the engine or the gearing,or maybe both ?
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
It started as the prior generation S1000RR egnine and has a different cylinder head, redesigned ports, cam profiles, mapping, ignition coils and camshaft sensors. It's very linear but extremely responsive at low rpm - and more so at high rpm.
@EEEBA1
@EEEBA1 7 лет назад
Do I need that special tool to change the suspension settings if I get the sports package with my S1000R? Thank you
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 7 лет назад
I believe all models have manual rear preload adustment. The provided tool doesn't work in my hands or in the hands of the BMW mechanics at my local dealer. We're either all idiots or the tool isn't well designed.
@EEEBA1
@EEEBA1 7 лет назад
Minner Q That got me little concerned. I'm glad you mentioned it. You said something like "the bike didn't want to turn" until you adjusted it. That's probably something I would notice on my test ride I guess?!
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 7 лет назад
If those words came out they were meaningless jibberish. It was, and is, always happy to dig into a corner. The preload adjustment just made the rear more stable while it was being compressed - less bounce. I'm pretty sure the only thing more dynamically satisfying in this class would be the Tuono - if you're willing to accept its negatives.
@mirchas

I own the same bike, and love it. What kind of tank pads are those?
@AlanTrades

Does it require a valve adjustment? How's the general maintenance on it
@alspeed856
@alspeed856 8 лет назад
Hey Minner....does your mirrors vibrate at a certain speed? I am having issues driving at certain speeds. Thanks!
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
There's a high frequency, low amplitude, buzz in the mirrors at all speeds but I think it's worst over 6k rpm. I can see the cars behind me, the color, the general shape of the vehicle, so I have no problem with the buzz. They worked quite well for me. I just fitted rizoma reverse retro mirrors yesterday. I'll post a video about benefits and drawbacks tomorrow.
@BadaLUI

U don't have the dinamic damping control right? the stock suspensions are still mechanically adjustable even with no DDC?
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
+BadaLUI Yes, no dynamic damping. The front has rebound and compression and the rear has preload and rebound.

Hey I am shopping around for a new bike and was wondering if you think the R would be able to be comfortable enough and work for two week long cross country trips? The rest of the time I would is the bike as a commuter.
@MinnerQ
@MinnerQ 8 лет назад
I would work but isn't ideal for touring. It's good if there's a mix between track, canyon roads, commuting but if it's mainly touring and commuting the XR or R1200R/RS would be a better choice. That said, people tour on less comfortable sport bikes all the time. I think the S1000R gets grumpy when it's forced to ride slow and straight. It needs speed to keep the heat down, the engine is happiest with some revs, positing is arranged for more aggressive riding and the range isn't bad but can't match bikes that are meant to travel further. Things like seat comfort, handlebar position, knee angle are better on touring-sport touring bikes. Especially over long distances. You can raise the bars, get a new seat and new rear sets but a sport oriented touring bike would have that to begin with. If you can't swallow the looks and stigma of the sport touring crowd I think the GSX-S1000F is a great option. In the end, ride a bike for a couple of hours before you decide. Buy what makes you smile.

Update.. Now having issue with bike starting up HoT.. she must sit for good 5 minutes before it will turn over.. acts as if battery dead, however battery test fine ? Have you or know of anyone else with similar issue? Apt next tuesday at BMW to sort (hopefully)

I haven't heard about that one. Sorry to hear about the trouble. Hopefully they'll sort it out quickly at the dealer. In the meantime, I'll keep my ear to the ground.

+jerryx2000 perceived reliability and only having one bike. Other little things such as appearance, the s1000r has more room, likely longer range for commuting, prefer a gas gauge..
