BMW S1000RR exhaust headers on S1000R. Install video

Install video on fitting -15/-16 S1000RR exhaust headers to a -14/16 S1000R.
How to, issues I encountered and basically what you need to do to do this mod.
Why not get a complete system? Well this is a cheap solution and the bike appears to be stock.
A slip-on on the S1000R is more or less pointless and hardly make any difference, this way you get a better sounding bike.

I just did this as well. but i swapped over the exhaust valve cable and actuator from the s1000rr to make the cable routing look sleeker. I love the new sound now. Thanks for the video i got the idea from you. next is a tune on the power commander because of the higher flow.

@850bimmer 5 лет назад
Hi. No I have no issues with that. But the S1kr only revs to 12.000rpm. Also I don't drive up near top speed very often. My guess would that perhaps your front exhaust valve is not working correctly (should trigger a fault though), or the engine detects that you are running too lean and won't let the engine rev higher. Might need a tune. My bike is pretty rough, think its too lean, so I'm going to get a power commander and perhaps an auto-tune.

I think those have a higher foot position, probably not comfortable considering the more upright seating position. I was looking for reasets to lower my foot position, but I could not find any. My mechanic managed to fix this by cutting off a short piece of the -RR headers, it lines up now and looks completely stock. Not gotten started with the videos this year year, the season has just kicked off and I plan to cover this, and tuning the bike in a video, hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks.

So is it fair to say with stock exhaust with value disconnected to stay open will make the bike louder, so could this be an option instead of getting a slip on. Just disconnect value on stock system?
@850bimmer
@850bimmer Год назад
The rear valve is semi-closed under 4000rpm and fully open above 4000. You would get a louder bike at low speeds but no change at higher speeds/rpm. Also the valve is splingloaded closed so you would have to fix it open, not sure if the servo will throw a fault code if disconnect the wire and it sees no load, electrically disconnecting it will. But there are modules for that, think they are called "servo buddy" or something.

You can expect it to be quite loud. the RR has 3 catalytic converters, two in the header pipes, and one in the rear muffler. Now you only have the two in the Header pipe. You can leave it stock, but I recommend a tune. I drove mine 2000km before installing a tune.

The headers would fit just fine, the muffler/Slip-on. I guess that would depend on the mount. If the mount is at the passenger footrest then you would probably be OK. If it's on the rider footrest, you will probably have the same issue I have with the mount. Also if the Akrapovic system has a rear valve, you will have a similar issue that I have. The pipes will fit and bolt straight on, the issue will be the valve and the muffler mount.

I did not remove the radiator, I removed the bottom mount (between the radiator and oil cooler) this has to be removed because of the link pipes on the header. Then I loosened the top radiator mount screws about half way and that gave me enough flex in the radiator so that I could remove and install the headers.

@850bimmer
@850bimmer 5 лет назад
#hbwesman It’s being done now. A Bazzaz system was installed day before yesterday, just waiting for the Dyno to be available. Initial run showed that it was lean all over, messy below 4000rpm, hence the “bucking bronco” at low rpm, a general dip in the midrange and it pretty much flatlined at 9000rpm. Think I had about 150 whp. I’ll make a follow up video when it’s done.
@wes8249
@wes8249 5 лет назад
@@850bimmer Oh wow, that's interesting. I've been considering a full Yoshimura system and contacted them directly asking if my bike would need a tune after a full system install. They replied and said that there system is designed to use the stock/OEM engine map and that a tune is not necesssary(here in SoCal anyways). Might be needed in other parts of the world in extreme climates, elevations, etc... So I am finding it pretty interesting that after installing the S1000RR that a tune would be necessary. Decisions, decisions.........
@850bimmer
@850bimmer 5 лет назад
@@wes8249 I guess my change has significantly changed the flow in the exhaust as the -RR headers has much less restrictions, I eliminated the catalytic converter in the slip-on which further changed things. Also these bikes are quite lean from the factory down low to get the best possible emissions score, this is why they pop and crackle a lot. Many bikes are therefore quite jerky riding around in city traffic, not dangerous, but less comfortable and very annoying. I expect to have a smooth bike at all revs after the tune, and maybe 5 horsepower more than stock, but that is not really my goal.

I got the bracket with the exhaust, so if you get one, make sure you get it, or else BMW will probably help you get one. the rear muffler does not line up with the footpeg mount as mentioned at 9:45, but if you cut a little off the header pipe, it can be made to fit. Is this mod legal in your country? I would love to do this but i don't think i could get this street legal registered in Germany and the "TÜV" (german technical inspection) would notice it immediately.
@850bimmer
@850bimmer 5 лет назад
I think an inspector would have to have detailed knowledge of the bike to spot that it was an exhaust for a different model BMW. It looks like a stock exhaust with a E marked slip-on, my Cobra Slip-on is manufactured in Germany. In my country motorcycles are not inspected, only cars every 2 years. So unless I get pulled over and noise measured, I don't expect any problems, it's not that loud. If you install the 3rd analytic converter between the slip-on and the header pipe, the system is compliant with the same EURO category as the 15/16 -RR which basically has the same engine. The first bike this mod was done on was a German one, and where everyone at the S1000R forum got the inspiration.

Haven't ridden the bike more than 50km or so so I really can't give a proper answer. I can't really say that there is a notable difference in power in any direction, feels the same. The sound of the bike has completely changed though, but that might also be down to the choice of the Cobra slip on (which is virtually empty inside). It's deeper, drones a bit more and likes to be over 5000rpm or under 3000rpm. I find myself using 5th up to around 100kph due to drone, and in city/slow riding I use 3rd or 4th where I used 2nd earlier because otherwise it is too loud. Since the sound is deeper I have also missed my feel for the rpm range and have redlined the bike earlier than what I expected, because I think I still have 2-3000rpm more to go and then notice the flashing light. The bike is not jerky or run rough, might actually be smoother at low rpm than before, but I think it could do with a tune. My plan is to make more videos with sound and a review once I have been able to ride the bike a few hundred km.

The slip-on might be difficult though, the -17 R has the mount on the passenger foot peg, while the older ones have it on the rear set. You would probably have to make a fairly big bracket.

2014 and 2015 are same?
@850bimmer

The -RR is the same 2014 & 2015. 2014 was the first year with the new frame, and 2016 saw a new exhaust due to regulations. So only those two years are the same. This will bolt on to the -R from 2014-2016, since the -R in 2017 got the same frame as the -RR did in 2014, it will probably fit the 2017-2020 -R as well.
